On average, a tree absorbs 10 kilograms (22 pounds) of carbon dioxide yearly during the first 20 years. To do my part, I will plant 2 trees in my community, public parks, or backyard.
Climate & Ecosystems
Create & Share A Love Letter, Poem, Song or Picture
SDG 14, 15
I will express my love and gratitude for our planet by writing a love letter, poem, song or taking a picture. I will share this in the Ecochallenge feed or on my social media.
Education & Livelihood
Research Impact Investing
SDG 8
Using the links provided below, I will research impact investing or my current investment portfolio to determine if they align with my values.
Climate & Ecosystems
Choose Sustainable Seafood Options
SDG 14
Using Seafood Watch's list, I will enjoy 1 sustainable seafood meals each day.
Health & Equity
Advocate for Equitable Food Access
SDG 10
Access to affordable, nutritious food is a food justice issue. I will advocate for equitable food options at work, campus, or in the spaces I frequent by contacting community leaders and/or doing other advocacy actions.
Education & Livelihood
Stay on the Ground
SDG 11
Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally). As an example, a plane from New York to Los Angeles (~2,450 miles) generates about 65 tons of carbon dioxide.
Climate & Ecosystems
Calculate Your Carbon Impact
SDG 13
I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.
Economy & Communities
Learn and Discuss The Economy & Communities SDGs
SDG 7, 9, 12
Each day, I will spend 10 minutes learning about these SDGs and talk with 5 people about what I learned.

Economy & Communities
Analyze Your Utility Bills

I spend 30 minutes analyzing my recent utility bills, which might include electricity, gas, or water to see what my current usage is and determine if I can reduce my energy and water use.
Health & Equity

I will find out what food programs are in my area and donate food and/or other items that they request.
Health & Equity
Make Cleaning Products
SDG 3
I will make a few homemade cleaning products.
Basic Needs & Security

-
Barbara Bell 4/27/2023 12:50 PMI am looking forward to planting vegetables and some flowers. We are still getting snow so I am still waiting. Gardening also relieves my stress. I think the vegetables always taste better then anything from the store! -
Barbara Bell 4/27/2023 12:46 PMI have enjoyed the EcoChallenge. The hardest daily goal I picked is taking a picture, writing a poem or song and post to social media. I don't post much to social media. I have been taking pictures while exploring the neighborhood. It is usually around sunset, so I have some good pictures of the sun going down. -
Barbara Bell 4/24/2023 5:05 AMMy ecochallenge has been fun. It has not really been that hard to do the daily challenges. I feel more relaxed when exploring the environment. I now look forward to the walks around different areas. I plan to continue after the challenge. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEconomy & CommunitiesWhat did you watch, and what was the most important thing you learned in the documentaries you watched? How does what you learned connect to your understanding of climate change and Earth Month?
Barbara Bell 4/20/2023 4:49 AMI watched the documentary about how climate change boosts the economy. I learned that 1 out of 2 creatures will be extinct if we continue on our current path. Climate change is real and we have to change our processes to ensure our future on Earth. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & EcosystemsWhat did you watch, and what was the most important thing you learned in the documentary(ies) you watched? How does what you learned connect to your understanding of climate change and Earth Month?
Barbara Bell 4/20/2023 4:40 AMI watched a documentary about an octopus and how she "bonded" with a human. I did not know the depth of their skill and intelligence. There should be a place in the world for all creatures. As the climate changes due to things humans do, the other species could be eliminated. They all deserve to exist and contribute to the Earth's development. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & EcosystemsHow is planting trees good for your mental, physical, and spiritual health?
Barbara Bell 4/20/2023 4:37 AMPlanting trees gives me satisfaction. I am planting something that may be there for several generations. The tree is going to contribute to clean air. Kids may climb it and animals may live in it. It's a good feeling to know I am helping the environment. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEducation & LivelihoodWhat place in your region are you most excited to visit during your staycation?
Barbara Bell 4/18/2023 1:10 PMI am excited to go to Chicago. We live about 70 miles west of Chicago. Instead of driving, we are going to take the train and visit the Field Museum and the Aquarium. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEconomy & CommunitiesWhat was it like to mend your clothing? If you are skilled at mending, what tips do you have for others?
Barbara Bell 4/18/2023 1:07 PMIt was difficult to mend clothing. I am not good at it. I tried to learn how to sew. It looked terrible but worked. Hopefully, I can get better with practice! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & EquityHow is food equity and access linked to a sustainable future?
Barbara Bell 4/18/2023 12:49 PMPeople can grow their own food which will contribute to a sustainable future. If people grow more food, less animals will be eaten and the air will also be cleaner. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & EquityWhy do you donate food? How does it connect to your values?
Barbara Bell 4/18/2023 12:39 PMI donate food ensure people have enough to eat and are not going hungry. It is very hard to concentrate on a job or school work if you are starving and wondering when you will have another meal. Everyone deserves a fair chance in life. Making sure someone has enough to eat is a good way to help them get that chance.
