Michelle's actions
Climate & Ecosystems
Ecological & Xeriscape Gardening
SDG 14, 15
Studies show a grass lawn is water intensive and on average it require about 30 percent of a household’s water consumption. I will do one or more of the following actions in my yard or community to conserve water and improve habitat: plant indigenous plants, landscape with water-efficient plants, add mulching, replace a lawn, and/or use eco-friendly fertilizers.
Climate & Ecosystems
Support Local Pollinators
SDG 15
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators to produce fruit. I will plant pollinator-friendly plants in my area to support local pollinators.
Health & Equity
Make Cleaning Products
SDG 3
I will make a few homemade cleaning products.
Climate & Ecosystems
Plant a Tree
SDG 15
On average, a tree absorbs 10 kilograms (22 pounds) of carbon dioxide yearly during the first 20 years. To do my part, I will plant 2 trees in my community, public parks, or backyard.
Basic Needs & Security
Reduce Animal Product Consumption
SDG 2
One kilogram of beef and cheese emits 71kg and 24kg of greenhouse gasses, while 1kg of rice, grains, and legumes emits between 2-4kg. Fruits, vegetables, and nuts emit less than 1kg per 1kg. I will reduce my climate impact by enjoying 3 meatless meals and/or 1 vegan meals each day this week.
Basic Needs & Security
Know Your Produce
SDG 2
I will become a savvy produce shopper when buying organic and non-organic items.
Climate & Ecosystems
Wilton Wildlife Earth Day event
Requires watching a webinar on wetlands and wetland plants and animals and then participating in the Earth Day invasive plant clean up at the Wilton Wildlife Preserve.
Climate & Ecosystems
Advocate for Water Habitat!
SDG 14
I will make 1 phone calls and/or send 1 emails to public officials to advocate for water habitat protection and clean up in my region.
Education & Livelihood
Host or Join a Cleanup Event
SDG 11, 17
Within my community at home or work, I will organize or attend a local cleanup event.
Basic Needs & Security
Try a New Vegan or Vegetarian Recipe
I will try a new vegan or vegetarian recipe and share how it turns out on the Ecochallenge feed, or with family and friends.
Climate & Ecosystems
Watch a Documentary About Climate Change or Nature
SDG 13, 14, 15
I will watch 2 documentaries about climate change.
Health & Equity
Practice Mindfulness
SDG 3
I will spend 10 minutes each day practicing mindfulness.
Economy & Communities
Choose Clean/Renewable Energy
SDG 7
I will contact my energy company to find out how to sign up for my utility company's clean/renewable energy option.
Education & Livelihood
Research Impact Investing
SDG 8
Using the links provided below, I will research impact investing or my current investment portfolio to determine if they align with my values.
Economy & Communities
Mend Clothing
SDG 9
I will mend clothing for myself, family or friends.
Health & Equity
Spend Time Outside
SDG 3
I will replace 30 minute(s) per day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside exercising, enjoying the sunrise/sunset, gardening, journaling, or practicing gratitude for nature.
Health & Equity
Track My Purchases
SDG 10
Each day, I will track my purchases to identify my spending habits. This will allow me to see what purchases can be reduced.
Education & Livelihood
Stay on the Ground
SDG 11
Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally). As an example, a plane from New York to Los Angeles (~2,450 miles) generates about 65 tons of carbon dioxide.
Education & Livelihood
Work-Life Balance
SDG 8
During the workday, I will schedule time for daily breaks during work days to practice work-life balance.
Health & Equity
Watch a Documentary About Equity, Gender, Health, or Peace
SDG 3, 5, 10, 16
I will watch 1 documentaries about equity, gender, health, or peace.

SDG 12
I will have a conversation with one or more nonprofit organizations I want to be involved with.
Climate & Ecosystems
Guided Nature Walk
Chaperoning students on a nature walk through a local park.

REFLECTION QUESTIONEconomy & CommunitiesWhat did you watch, and what was the most important thing you learned in the documentaries you watched? How does what you learned connect to your understanding of climate change and Earth Month?
Michelle Bilodeau-Lanne 4/17/2023 12:19 PMI watched "The Crime of the Century" about the Sackler family, Purdu Pharma and the opioid crisis. While not specifically about climate, it clearly shows how money connects with power and influence in our country. Despite the fact that government officials could clearly see the devastation wrought by the burgeoning opioid crisis, they failed to act for fear of alienating large donors from the pharmaceutical industry. In the same way, they are failing to take appropriate actions to curtail fossil fuels now because the companies are massive donors to their campaigns. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEconomy & CommunitiesWhat was it like to mend your clothing? If you are skilled at mending, what tips do you have for others?
Michelle Bilodeau-Lanne 4/14/2023 1:01 PMI am not skilled at mending, but do use a local cobbler (Merrill's Shoe Repair off exit 18), and have all my clothes mended by a seamstress in Saratoga. I find it very satisfying to have things repaired. For this project I mended a canvas tote that I use for shopping. It does not look great, but is functional. My advice for others would be to try repairing instead of replacing; you will be surprised at how satisfying it is! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & EcosystemsWhat ecological or xeriscape landscaping practices do you have? How has your landscape changed from these practices?
Michelle Bilodeau-Lanne 4/13/2023 12:25 PMWe do not use any fertilizer other than compost on our grass and do not use any pesticides at all. We have pulled out a lot of the original landscaping and replaced it with native plants and shrubs. This year we are over-seeding with clover in the hopes that it will fill in some of the bare spots. We also do not mow in May for No-Mow May.-
Scott Royael 4/14/2023 8:59 AMHi Michelle...I find the history, culture, and economics of the 'American Lawn' to be so fascinating. The idea of a perfectly manicured carpet of lawn (and ecological desert) is so imbedded in our national psyche, yet there is so much research to show how negative their impact can be. Lucy wrote a great paper on the damage of lawns in our environmental science class!

REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & EcosystemsWhat did you watch, and what was the most important thing you learned in the documentary(ies) you watched? How does what you learned connect to your understanding of climate change and Earth Month?
Michelle Bilodeau-Lanne 4/07/2023 6:55 AMI watched "All That Breathes", which is currently available on HBO Max. It was an incredibly sad, beautiful, inspiring documentary about two brothers in Delhi, India, who have set up a wildlife sanctuary to care for injured raptors in the city. The air quality in Dehli is some of the worst in the world, and the birds often literally fall from the sky due to the high heat and polluted air. The brothers started the sanctuary from scratch and have been mostly self-funded (although they do apply for grants and have received some donations). What struck me most about the brothers' work is that given the scope of the problem, they are really only able to help a small percentage of the injured birds, and yet they continue to work tirelessly toward their goal. It is a reminder that as the climate continues to worsen, while it would be easy to get overwhelmed by the amount of suffering, it is important to keep doing what we can as individuals, even if it seems small in the face of the chaos. To each bird they save, they are the world, and each saved bird matters. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBasic Needs & SecurityWhat was the tastiest meatless or vegan meal you ever had or had recently? Did you make it? Can you share a recipe?
Michelle Bilodeau-Lanne 4/03/2023 11:49 AMMy favorite (new) vegetarian recipe is Vegetarian Shepherd's Pie from the New York Times. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & EquityWhat are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time inside and on screens?
Michelle Bilodeau-Lanne 4/03/2023 11:48 AMSpending all of our times on screens will prevent us from valueing what we have and working to save it. If we lose our connection to nature, we lose a part of ourselves. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEducation & LivelihoodAfter learning more about investing, how can you increase positive impacts and decrease negative impacts?
Michelle Bilodeau-Lanne 4/03/2023 9:17 AMLast fall I asked my financial planner to switch all of my non-cash investments to ESGs. We have been meeting monthly to transition everything over. I think that in general this is a great thing to do and my transitioned investments are actually doing better than my traditional investments, but some of the companies that qualify as ESGs are probably still problematic. The next iteration of this will be for me to spend time weeding out the ESGs that I don't think match my values.-
Scott Royael 4/04/2023 6:20 AMThanks for posting. I think we have great power to make change based on our purchasing. Your post also brings up a thought about having trust in labels/certifications. I sometimes get disheartened when I realize that I've been Greenwashed by a product and/or company. But, as with ESGs it probably just requires some additional time and research to determine what the best (or at least better) option is.

REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & EquityWhat was surprising about the ingredients in your cleaning supplies, personal care, and pet products?
Michelle Bilodeau-Lanne 4/03/2023 9:13 AMI already used natural and non-toxic products, but by switching some of my cleaning to simple vinegar and water, I cut down on the actual plastic containers of cleaning supplies that I need to purchase. Also, Healthy Living Marketplace has refillable containers for some products, including laundry and dish soap. We are going to transition to these products. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEducation & LivelihoodWhat was your process like for restructuring your trip? How can you avoid more air travel in the future?
Michelle Bilodeau-Lanne 4/02/2023 2:06 PMDriving instead of flying is requiring a hotel stay, but is still costing less than flying would have and saving carbon. I just need to leave a day earlier. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEconomy & CommunitiesHow might you be able to get others involved in advocating for the clean energy shift?
Michelle Bilodeau-Lanne 4/02/2023 2:04 PMWe purchase solar energy through our energy company. We don’t have panels ourselves, but pay for solar specific energy from our provider. We actually spend less than we would using gas. I can talk to friends about what we are doing and why.
