Basic Needs & Security
Make Zero-Waste Meals
SDG 2
I will cook 2 meals with zero waste each day.
Basic Needs & Security
Reduce Animal Product Consumption
SDG 2
One kilogram of beef and cheese emits 71kg and 24kg of greenhouse gasses, while 1kg of rice, grains, and legumes emits between 2-4kg. Fruits, vegetables, and nuts emit less than 1kg per 1kg. I will reduce my climate impact by enjoying 1 meatless meals and/or 1 vegan meals each day this week.
Health & Equity
Communicate Constructively
SDG 16
I will use the communication methods I read about to practice effective, compassionate, and nonviolent communication with someone I interact with regularly (i.e., my roommate, parents, co-worker, partner, classmates, or children).
Basic Needs & Security
Know Your Produce
SDG 2
I will become a savvy produce shopper when buying organic and non-organic items.
Health & Equity
Spend Time Outside
SDG 3

Bees are behind a third of all the food we eat, including fruit, veggies, chocolate, nuts, and coffee. In this immersive workshop, you’ll learn more about urban beekeeping and the microcosm that is the hive. We’ll follow a bee’s life’s journey from when she first emerges from her cell to her final flight. When: Thursday April 20 from 1-2pm Where: AME-119 Space is limited. REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & EcosystemsWhat tables did you visit? Did you learn something new?
Randy Boman 4/21/2023 6:37 AMI especially enjoyed the table with photos of peoples pets. Having a pet is a huge responsibility yet at the same time, it can be so rewarding!
I also spoke to the friendly person at the table for the Wildlife federation. She explained the amazing opportunities for young people to learn, travel to other provinces, and to explore the beautiful natural wonders our country has to offer! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & EquityWhat are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time inside and on screens?
Randy Boman 4/20/2023 8:06 AMPeople are more depressed and anxious and our constant need to be connected at all times to our devices definitely has a role in this. Taking time to disconnect from technology, and getting a breath of fresh air, will be more beneficial for our overall health! -
Randy Boman 4/13/2023 8:31 AMI did not mind being without power for four days.
I enjoyed the quiet in the house, no humming from thermostats or electrical appliances. I felt free to relax and actually have time to read a book.
The downside was all the food waste due to lack of refrigeration. Will need to be better prepared for future power outages to minimize perishable food going bad.-

REFLECTION QUESTIONBasic Needs & SecurityWhat was the tastiest meatless or vegan meal you ever had or had recently? Did you make it? Can you share a recipe?
Randy Boman 4/11/2023 8:37 AMMade a bean salad with different canned beans and cleaned out the veggies I salvaged after the power outage. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEducation & LivelihoodHow do you create new sustainability-related habits or change bad habits?
Randy Boman 4/05/2023 6:47 AMI try to avoid prepackaged foods. I bring reusable containers, coffee cup and utensils in my lunch bag. I bring back my compostable items to my home to put in compost.-
Melissa Tomecz 4/07/2023 3:35 PMI bring back compostable things to my house too! But pretty soon, JAC will have more compostable bins that are available all around campus, not just at the cafeteria.
