Ryan's actions
Economy & Communities
Create A Readiness Plan
SDG 9
Each day, I will spend time developing a readiness plan for my household in the event of an emergency.
Basic Needs & Security
Try a New Vegan or Vegetarian Recipe
I will try a new vegan or vegetarian recipe and share how it turns out on the Ecochallenge feed, or with family and friends.
Climate & Ecosystems
Calculate Your Carbon Impact
SDG 13
I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.
Health & Equity
Practice Mindfulness
SDG 3
I will spend 10 minutes each day practicing mindfulness.
Health & Equity
Track My Purchases
SDG 10
Each day, I will track my purchases to identify my spending habits. This will allow me to see what purchases can be reduced.
Health & Equity
Spend Time Outside
SDG 3
I will replace 15 minute(s) per day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside exercising, enjoying the sunrise/sunset, gardening, journaling, or practicing gratitude for nature.
Basic Needs & Security
Calculate Your Water Footprint
SDG 6
I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste.
Basic Needs & Security
Know Your Produce
SDG 2
I will become a savvy produce shopper when buying organic and non-organic items.
Climate & Ecosystems
Explore My Area
SDG 14, 15
Each day, I will spend 15 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).
Climate & Ecosystems
Watch a Documentary About Climate Change or Nature
SDG 13, 14, 15
I will watch 2 documentaries about climate change.
Climate & Ecosystems
Plant a Tree
SDG 15
On average, a tree absorbs 10 kilograms (22 pounds) of carbon dioxide yearly during the first 20 years. To do my part, I will plant 3 trees in my community, public parks, or backyard.
Economy & Communities
Mend Clothing
SDG 9
I will mend clothing for myself, family or friends.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & EcosystemsHow can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place? Was there a new place in your region that was exciting to learn about and visit?
Ryan Burgener 4/14/2023 3:14 PMWe recently discovered an entire trail system a mere 10 minutes up the road. Leashing up the dogs and walking off the stress of the day has quickly become a favorite activity! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEconomy & CommunitiesWhat was it like to create a readiness plan? Did you find other resources you could share?
Ryan Burgener 4/11/2023 1:18 PMI recently finished Community Emergency Response Training with FEMA, and this was a great reminder that I haven't completed my own readiness plan. Even throwing some basic essentials into a bag for my storage room gives me peace of mind.-
Mary Hanks 4/15/2023 9:50 PMRyan, I first did CERT training back in 2009, but I find that 14 years later I'm still refining my readiness plan! The more possible scenarios I consider, the more adjustments I make. And I'm always on the lookout for new products that might make sheltering in place or evacuating easier to handle.

REFLECTION QUESTIONBasic Needs & SecurityWhat is one way you will reduce your water use? What is a practice you already have that helps you reduce your water use?
Ryan Burgener 4/07/2023 8:07 AMThis year I am changing the overhead sprinklers in my garden to drip irrigation. In addition to being better for my vegetables it will dramatically cut down water utilization! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & EcosystemsWhat is one way you will reduce your carbon footprint? What is a practice you already have that helps you reduce your carbon footprint?
Ryan Burgener 4/07/2023 8:06 AMI often don't think of the carbon impact of a simple online return! Being more mindful when I'm picking out items online - and then more targeted in what I return - can have an immediate impact on my carbon footprint.
