Attend the “Discover the World of Bees” Workshop at JAC
Did you know that JAC has our own bee hives on the roof? Alveole, the group who manages our bee hives, will present this workshop. Bees are behind a third of all the food we eat, including fruit, veggies, chocolate, nuts, and coffee. In this immersive workshop, you’ll learn more about urban beekeeping and the microcosm that is the hive. We’ll follow a bee’s life’s journey from when she first emerges from her cell to her final flight. When: Thursday April 20 from 1-2pm Where: AME-119 Space is limited. Please register by Tuesday April 18
Basic Needs & Security
Reduce Animal Product Consumption
SDG 2
One kilogram of beef and cheese emits 71kg and 24kg of greenhouse gasses, while 1kg of rice, grains, and legumes emits between 2-4kg. Fruits, vegetables, and nuts emit less than 1kg per 1kg. I will reduce my climate impact by enjoying 1 meatless meals and/or 1 vegan meals each day this week.

REFLECTION QUESTIONEducation & LivelihoodWhat place in your region are you most excited to visit during your staycation?
Jessica Burpee 4/30/2023 2:48 PMI'm going to do a roadtrip to the Maritimes in an EV this summer. I have travelled to Africa, Hong Kong, New Zealand, and honestly, we have the same landscapes here in Canada, so to sometimes I ask myself why I have to get on a plane?? -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & EcosystemsWhat petition did you choose? Were you successful in gathering many signatures? How did you feel sending it to an elective representative?
Jessica Burpee 4/30/2023 2:45 PMSo I didn't actually write a petition myself, but I've asked 70 students to do so, and I'm impressed at what they've come up with - very cool initiatives for climate action. They will go out to elected officials (and a couple of JAC staff...) over the next week...-

REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & EcosystemsWhat did you watch, and what was the most important thing you learned in the documentary(ies) you watched? How does what you learned connect to your understanding of climate change and Earth Month?
Jessica Burpee 4/30/2023 2:43 PMI watched some documentaries about doing citizen science by using iNaturalist to identify species. We're going to do a bioblitz on campus tomorrow, so I was reminding myself how to use the app and getting more familiar with the way everything works. Good reminder of how citizen scientists can really help ecologists gather tons of data on populations of many species, which helps them keep track of numbers, migration, mating, etc. -

REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & EcosystemsWas this hard for you to do?
Jessica Burpee 4/30/2023 2:36 PMThis took some organizing, since I live in NDG and wasn't sure I could bike both ways. I drove with my bike on the car to Pte Claire then picked up some people along the Lakeshore to school - it was actually really fun!!

REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & EcosystemsWhat tables did you visit? Did you learn something new?
Jessica Burpee 4/21/2023 12:31 PMI was amazed at the number of student tables at Earth Day this year - bravo to everyone who participated! A few students signed up with me for the Environmental Studies Certificate, which is great. A few people signed up to get free bus passes for next Wed - awesome. So many great things going on, such great energy!! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & EquityHow did this film impact you?
Jessica Burpee 4/21/2023 12:04 PMThis film was so well done!! I highly recommend it. You can watch it on CBC Gem anytime you want. I don't see why you shouldn't get points for it either... ;) -
