Economy & Communities
Analyze Your Utility Bills
SDG 7
I spend 45 minutes analyzing my recent utility bills, which might include electricity, gas, or water to see what my current usage is and determine if I can reduce my energy and water use.
Climate & Ecosystems
Ecological & Xeriscape Gardening
SDG 14, 15
Studies show a grass lawn is water intensive and on average it require about 30 percent of a household’s water consumption. I will do one or more of the following actions in my yard or community to conserve water and improve habitat: plant indigenous plants, landscape with water-efficient plants, add mulching, replace a lawn, and/or use eco-friendly fertilizers.
Economy & Communities
Online Energy Audit
SDG 7
I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy.
Economy & Communities
Choose Clean/Renewable Energy
SDG 7
I will contact my energy company to find out how to sign up for my utility company's clean/renewable energy option.
Education & Livelihood
Research Impact Investing
SDG 8
Using the links provided below, I will research impact investing or my current investment portfolio to determine if they align with my values.
Basic Needs & Security
Know Your Produce
SDG 2
I will become a savvy produce shopper when buying organic and non-organic items.
Health & Equity
Support Indigenous & First Nations Communities
SDG 10
I will spend 45 learning about the past and present indigenous communities in my regions and what I can do to be supportive.
Climate & Ecosystems
Collect Litter on a Plog / Plalk
SDG 15
Each day, I will go on a plog or plalk for 15 minutes and collect 5 items of litter.
Basic Needs & Security
Try a New Vegan or Vegetarian Recipe
I will try a new vegan or vegetarian recipe and share how it turns out on the Ecochallenge feed, or with family and friends.
Climate & Ecosystems
Explore My Area
SDG 14, 15
Each day, I will spend 15 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).
Health & Equity
Communicate Constructively
SDG 16
I will use the communication methods I read about to practice effective, compassionate, and nonviolent communication with someone I interact with regularly (i.e., my roommate, parents, co-worker, partner, classmates, or children).
Health & Equity
Practice Mindfulness
SDG 3
I will spend 10 minutes each day practicing mindfulness.
Health & Equity
Spend Time Outside
SDG 3
I will replace 30 minute(s) per day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside exercising, enjoying the sunrise/sunset, gardening, journaling, or practicing gratitude for nature.

REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & EcosystemsWhat was your experience like plogging, or engaging in another way to collect litter while being outside? Was there any item you collected that was unusual that you found?
Susan Canady-Denham 4/26/2023 4:51 PMIt was a beautiful day for a walk and clean up. Seeing flowers in bloom while cleaning up the neighborhood. Seems to be lots of cans to recycle. Cigarette butts seem to be tossed from cars frequently where I picked up. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & EcosystemsHow can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place? Was there a new place in your region that was exciting to learn about and visit?

REFLECTION QUESTIONBasic Needs & SecurityWhat was the dish you made, and how did it turn out? What did it feel like to try a new recipe? If you can share a picture, please do!
Susan Canady-Denham 4/21/2023 2:29 PMI'm trying to add more fruits to my regular diet. I'm not a big fruit fan, but I am finding smoothies are a good way to get them in. The one I tried this morning is called the apple pie smoothie. I adjusted it a bit for what I had on hand.
2 apples (cored, cut up in cubes, and frozen overnight)
rolled oats (1/3 cup)
almond milk (2/3 cup)
cinnamon (1 tsp)
vanilla (1 tsp)
honey
Recipe calls for a cup of greek yogurt but didn't have any so I added more almond milk.
(Serves 2 to 3)
It was pretty good... might try it with oat milk next time and ditch the almond milk/rolled oats.
