Economy & Communities
Analyze Your Utility Bills
SDG 7
I spend 15 minutes analyzing my recent utility bills, which might include electricity, gas, or water to see what my current usage is and determine if I can reduce my energy and water use.
Economy & Communities
Community Actions to decrease our Landfills
Schedule a Community/neighborhood Yard Sale to sell, trade and give away gently used items. Tons of waste is placed in our land fills each year. If we can sell, trade or donate to individuals that can continue the use of these items, it prevents them from being thrown in the trash/landfills. Any remaining items, are donated to the Goodwill.
Economy & Communities
Community Outreach
I will volunteer at least 4 hours in my community
Climate & Ecosystems
Watch a Documentary About Climate Change or Nature

Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONEconomy & CommunitiesWhat was the most interesting thing you learned from analyzing your utility bill? What are some ways you can save energy and water?
Yvette Collins 4/17/2023 4:26 PMIt varies, but typically my Electricity is higher, so my family spent time reviewing our electronic footprint to find ways to converse and unplug those electronics with the constant little light indicator, that still pulls a small amount of energy. It has been interesting to take a hard look at our waste and what we can do to conserve. -
Yvette Collins 4/16/2023 7:50 PMNatural Fire Prevention (Goats R Us)
A few years ago our city voted and decided a different course of action to mitigate the horrible fires that Northern California was experiencing. As many cities, we would normally use machinery to control the grass and overgrowth of weeds, etc.
The new solution: GOATS!!!! It is all natural, mother nature approved and no damage to the environment. Our city approved a decision to bring in approximately 150 goats to the rolling hills of Northern Benicia to graze. There are about 50 separate open space areas together totally 1,800 acres of incorporated natural open space near our residential areas. These areas create unique challenges for the fire department during the summer fire season.
The goats will graze from late March through June, removing combustible vegetation. It is a wonderful site to see the goats at work and hear them too. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & EcosystemsHow can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place? Was there a new place in your region that was exciting to learn about and visit?
Yvette Collins 4/16/2023 7:20 PMI have discovered so many new and exciting places to spend time in reflection, relaxation and just enjoying the beauty that nature provides us each and every day. Have you found a special place that you enjoy visiting? -
Yvette Collins 4/15/2023 7:04 PMMAJESTIC REDWOOD TREES
While I was at the community event, there was the most beautiful, tall, and majestic Redwood Trees. I asked the manager at the event, she told me they were planted in 1989. Wow. Just 34 Years old. Still pretty young for Redwood Trees, but they were beautiful standing tall in the morning crisp air, as the sun was rising.-

Yvette Collins 4/15/2023 6:54 PMCommunity Yard SaleI participated in the Annual Community Yard Sale and Give away. This is our family's favorite event. It is wonderful to see gently used items find a new home, and not to be thrown away. This type of event helps to mitigate the tons of items that go to our Landfills annually.-
