Nicole 's actions
Health & Equity
Watch a Documentary About Equity, Gender, Health, or Peace
SDG 3, 5, 10, 16
I will watch 1 documentaries about equity, gender, health, or peace.
Education & Livelihood
Share Your #KohlerEcochallenge Journey
Share your journey and one thing you learn during the Ecochallenge on any platform (LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, KohlerNow) using hashtag #KohlerEcochallenge!
Climate & Ecosystems
Ecological & Xeriscape Gardening
SDG 14, 15
Studies show a grass lawn is water intensive and on average it require about 30 percent of a household’s water consumption. I will do one or more of the following actions in my yard or community to conserve water and improve habitat: plant indigenous plants, landscape with water-efficient plants, add mulching, replace a lawn, and/or use eco-friendly fertilizers.
Climate & Ecosystems
Calculate Your Carbon Impact
SDG 13
I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.
Health & Equity
Spend Time Outside
SDG 3
I will replace 30 minute(s) per day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside exercising, enjoying the sunrise/sunset, gardening, journaling, or practicing gratitude for nature.
Climate & Ecosystems
Drive Less
SDG 13
To reduce CO2 emissions each day, I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips.
Climate & Ecosystems
Support Local Pollinators
SDG 15
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators to produce fruit. I will plant pollinator-friendly plants in my area to support local pollinators.
Climate & Ecosystems
Explore My Area
SDG 14, 15
Each day, I will spend 60 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).
Health & Equity
Donate Food
SDG 3, 10
I will find out what food programs are in my area and donate food and/or other items that they request.
Basic Needs & Security
Calculate Your Water Footprint
SDG 6
I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste.
Basic Needs & Security
Reduce Animal Product Consumption
SDG 2
One kilogram of beef and cheese emits 71kg and 24kg of greenhouse gasses, while 1kg of rice, grains, and legumes emits between 2-4kg. Fruits, vegetables, and nuts emit less than 1kg per 1kg. I will reduce my climate impact by enjoying 3 meatless meals and/or 4 vegan meals each day this week.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

Nicole Cowell 4/16/2023 9:52 AMFun tip: I save all veggie and herb scraps (ends, too soft to eat, etc) in a bag in the freezer. When the bag is full I slow cook it with filtered water for 14 hours. Then strain out the solids and have amazingly richly flavored, chemical free, salt free broth. I put the solids in compost and they are great for speeding up compost since they’re already in the process of breaking down from the slow cook. -
Nicole Cowell 4/09/2023 8:41 AMSo important to plan your gardens to support local pollinators and also naturally pest reducing. No pesticides! UW Madison holds great virtual free webinars to teach about this. You can find them on social media. -
Nicole Cowell 4/05/2023 5:54 PMWe try to live low impact in our house. No meat or dairy, CSA or local co-op and growing our own vegetables for most of our food. We compost and recycle all we can and use reusable shopping totes and make purchase choices based on what they are wrapped in. We also do rainwater collection for the garden. There’s always more to learn though so I will be interested to learn more about what else we can do.-
