REFLECTION QUESTIONEducation & LivelihoodWhat's your experience been with the Ecochallenge? Do you feel like you've learned something new or are making a difference?
Sean Coyle 4/28/2023 10:59 AMoverall i've been pretty pleased with the EcoChallenge. I've felt pretty glad to see that many of the actions my boyfriend and I take in our day-to-day lives are those suggested to reduce our carbon footprint. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & EcosystemsAre you more or less aware of Earth Day this year because of the Ecochallenge?
Sean Coyle 4/28/2023 10:57 AMMy boyfriend and I joined a small park cleanup at sportsman lake park in Cullman. Always a joy to meet community members and contribute! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEducation & LivelihoodAre your colleagues interested in the Ecochallenge? What kind of conversations and feedback have you received?
Sean Coyle 4/28/2023 10:56 AMA few friends and colleagues have mentioned their team discussion of joining the ecochallenge next year, i wouldn't be surprised to hear that different labs at UAB might join up. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEconomy & CommunitiesChanging lightbulbs is an excellent first step toward energy efficiency! What's next for you?
Sean Coyle 4/04/2023 6:16 AMwe've slowly been replacing light bulbs in our apartment with LEDs and now have all existing bulbs changed out. Our next step has been looking for a way to increase the efficiency of some of our windows, particularly the ones that never open. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & EquityWhat are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time inside and on screens?
Sean Coyle 4/03/2023 6:47 AMFailure to observe the natural world outside of media results in ignorance of the needs of the world around us. a documentary on nature cannot encompass the wildness of the world outside and can easily turn people away from respecting our environment and the need for conservation of our planet that provides us with the very air we need to breathe. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & EquityHow have you reduced your purchasing habits and what would you like to do next to reduce your consumption habits?
Sean Coyle 4/03/2023 6:44 AMMy worst expenditure is easily fancy coffee in the morning when i'm up early enough to get it before my drive to work. I'm definitely working to reduce the number of time i spend money on it both because it's expensive and time consuming, but also to avoid adding to the demand for plastic lids and paper cup products. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & EquityWhat was it like to practice mindfulness? If this is a practice for you already, what was something new you understood in practicing during Earth Month?
Sean Coyle 4/03/2023 6:42 AMI try and take time each morning to drink coffee or tea and sit outside or by my window. Often my commute to work gives me time to think about my plans for the week as well and consider the people in my life and how best to be present with them. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & EquityWhy do you donate food? How does it connect to your values?
Sean Coyle 4/03/2023 6:40 AM"Cullman Caring for Kids" is a food bank and resources program intended to provide advocacy and social services resources to children in Cullman County, AL. They're a partner with United Way and an excellent resource to assist families in need of legal support, housing advocacy, and a voice for children in hard situations. I donate here regularly as i want to help ensure this resource continues to exist for people in need. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEconomy & CommunitiesWhat was one nonprofit organization that was exciting to learn about?
Sean Coyle 4/03/2023 6:35 AMSpoke with Community of Hope encampment and service for individuals transitioning to permanent housing in Las Cruces, NM.-
