  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Climate & Ecosystems
What is one way you will reduce your carbon footprint? What is a practice you already have that helps you reduce your carbon footprint?

I really want to eat less meat and more vegetarian options. However, I do already avoid single use bottles and cups when going to get coffees and other things.

This week I feel like I have done pretty well as far as saying no to single use plastics, and being outside. Instead of plastic coke bottle, I started using a brand called Oli pop which is a replacement soda. Not only is it better for your body, but they come in cans which is also better for the environment. I also switched from almond milk to oat milk after realizing how much water is used to make almond milk. It is definitely not sustainable. Another really cool tid bit for my fellow college students and Chinese food lovers is PF Changs makes their microwavable dinners in paper bowls. No more feeling guilty about my frozen dinners. It really is wonderful, and I can take it to work. 10/10 recommend
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Climate & Ecosystems
What was a linking factor across this group of SDGs?

I am a coach for a U10 soccer league in my city. I love my girls, but today, after their game, there was trash everywhere on the bench. I called them aside, made them clean it up, and talked to them about the effects their plastic bottles and snacks can have on our environment. From our location, plastics that end up in the river only take 4 days to reach the ocean. We have to be more mindful about out planet and teaching the next generation about how to protect it.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Education & Livelihood
How does practicing a work-life balance create a more sustainable life for you? How might it contribute to sustainability more broadly?

Work life balance is super important. I love what I do. All of my social media feeds are full of animal and sustainability videos. I watch documentaries on sharks, extinction, and all the other topics out there. The learning and the knowledge for my job is an everyday thing. However, it is important to take a break from emails, phone calls, and all the stressful parts of your job from time to time. As many people know, high cortisol levels can lead to devastating health problems down the line. If you are not worried about your long term health or you love you job and want to do it daily, then I encourage you to look at the other aspects of your life, your family, friends, religion, hobbies, and see what all is suffering. All those things need to be balanced for your mental, social, and physical health to be at its best.

Another helpful tip for Shreveport and Bossier residents is Rhino also has a discount for bringing in your own cup and all their hot coffee products including their lids are biodegradable.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health & Equity
What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time inside and on screens?

I love spending time outside. The more time you spend time outside, the more you appreciate the world around you. When you never look up from your screen, you miss not only the beauty, but the trash that is blowing in the wind. It can be so heart breaking to see those things in the areas that you love. It seems so easy to just throw your trash in a trash in a trash can, when you know the sadness it brings to see it snagged in the rose bush or floating down the river.
