Basic Needs & Security
Take 5-Minute Or Less Showers
SDG 6
I will save up to 6 gallons (23 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute showers. Tip: Use a timer to practice or count to 60 a few times.
Climate & Ecosystems
Calculate Your Carbon Impact
SDG 13
I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.
Economy & Communities
Mend Clothing
SDG 9
I will mend clothing for myself, family or friends.
Education & Livelihood
Work-Life Balance
SDG 8
During the workday, I will schedule time for daily breaks during work days to practice work-life balance.
Basic Needs & Security
Try a New Vegan or Vegetarian Recipe
I will try a new vegan or vegetarian recipe and share how it turns out on the Ecochallenge feed, or with family and friends.
Economy & Communities
Replace Manual Thermostats
SDG 7, 9, 12
I will replace manual thermostats with smart ones.
Climate & Ecosystems
Drive Less
SDG 13
To reduce CO2 emissions each day, I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips.
Basic Needs & Security
Reduce Animal Product Consumption
SDG 2
One kilogram of beef and cheese emits 71kg and 24kg of greenhouse gasses, while 1kg of rice, grains, and legumes emits between 2-4kg. Fruits, vegetables, and nuts emit less than 1kg per 1kg. I will reduce my climate impact by enjoying 4 meatless meals and/or 4 vegan meals each day this week.
Climate & Ecosystems
No smoking
I will not smoke for a day. Smoking causes deforestation, generates huge amounts of toxic wastes and there is land pollution from all the cigarette butss

Attend the “Discover the World of Bees” Workshop at JAC
Did you know that JAC has our own bee hives on the roof? Alveole, the group who manages our bee hives, will present this workshop. Bees are behind a third of all the food we eat, including fruit, veggies, chocolate, nuts, and coffee. In this immersive workshop, you’ll learn more about urban beekeeping and the microcosm that is the hive. We’ll follow a bee’s life’s journey from when she first emerges from her cell to her final flight. When: Thursday April 20 from 1-2pm Where: AME-119 Space is limited. Please register by Tuesday April 18

Watch “Into The Weeds: Dewayne “Lee” Johnson vs. Monsanto Company”
“Into The Weeds” tells the story of Dewayne “Lee” Johnson, a former Bay Area groundskeeper who takes on a multinational agrochemical corporation after a terminal cancer diagnosis. Baichwal follows Johnson through his battle, setting his personal journey against a global environmental crisis. The film will be screened in in P-204 from 11:30 to 2:30pm on Wednesday April 19th and the filmmaker Jennifer Baichwal will be present for a Q&A. If you can't make it for the screening, the film is also viewable on the CBC website for free.

Alternative Transportation Day
Try cutting down on greenhouse gas emissions by finding another way to get to campus on April 26th (rain date: April 27th). Walk, bike, take the bus, the train, or carpool with someone!
Climate & Ecosystems
Explore My Area
SDG 14, 15
Each day, I will spend 30 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Nevish Dewlaul 4/30/2023 4:15 PMWe should do Earth year instead of Earth month.-
Melissa Tomecz 4/30/2023 7:44 PMEvery day is Earth Day! If people were just as mindful and caring about their sustainable habits, as they are during April---surely it can be done all year round. That is what the Eco Challenge hopes that participants will see. We need to encourage others to realize the value of Mother Nature. We'd all stick around longer if we did!
