Shawna's actions
Health & Equity
Support Indigenous & First Nations Communities
SDG 10
I will spend 30 learning about the past and present indigenous communities in my regions and what I can do to be supportive.
Climate & Ecosystems
Watch a Documentary About Climate Change or Nature
SDG 13, 14, 15
I will watch 3 documentaries about climate change.
Climate & Ecosystems
Plant a Tree
SDG 15
On average, a tree absorbs 10 kilograms (22 pounds) of carbon dioxide yearly during the first 20 years. To do my part, I will plant 4 trees in my community, public parks, or backyard.
Climate & Ecosystems
Collect Litter on a Plog / Plalk
SDG 15
Each day, I will go on a plog or plalk for 30 minutes and collect 10 items of litter.
Climate & Ecosystems
Support Local Pollinators
SDG 15
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators to produce fruit. I will plant pollinator-friendly plants in my area to support local pollinators.
Health & Equity
Donate Food
SDG 3, 10
I will find out what food programs are in my area and donate food and/or other items that they request.
Climate & Ecosystems
Ecological & Xeriscape Gardening
SDG 14, 15
Studies show a grass lawn is water intensive and on average it require about 30 percent of a household’s water consumption. I will do one or more of the following actions in my yard or community to conserve water and improve habitat: plant indigenous plants, landscape with water-efficient plants, add mulching, replace a lawn, and/or use eco-friendly fertilizers.
Health & Equity
Spend Time Outside
SDG 3
I will replace 15 minute(s) per day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside exercising, enjoying the sunrise/sunset, gardening, journaling, or practicing gratitude for nature.
Health & Equity
Communicate Constructively
SDG 16
I will use the communication methods I read about to practice effective, compassionate, and nonviolent communication with someone I interact with regularly (i.e., my roommate, parents, co-worker, partner, classmates, or children).
Health & Equity
Practice Mindfulness
SDG 3
I will spend 15 minutes each day practicing mindfulness.
Education & Livelihood
Work-Life Balance
SDG 8
During the workday, I will schedule time for daily breaks during work days to practice work-life balance.
Basic Needs & Security
Watch a Documentary About Food, Water, or Basic Needs
SDG 6
I will watch 2 documentaries about food, water, or basic needs.

REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & EquityWhat was it like to practice mindfulness? If this is a practice for you already, what was something new you understood in practicing during Earth Month?
Shawna Dilworth 4/05/2023 8:39 AMI have been practicing mindfulness for about a year now. It helps me in so many ways. I try to be mindful at least once a day to just be totally emersed in what I am doing at that moment. It is an amazing experience and I am glad that I do it! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & EquityWhat are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time inside and on screens?
Shawna Dilworth 4/05/2023 8:33 AMSpending most of your time inside and or on screens - you loose touch with nature and all the beautiful and amazing things to experience, will have a vitamin D deficiency, increased chances for depression and anxiety and isolation, -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEducation & LivelihoodHow does practicing a work-life balance create a more sustainable life for you? How might it contribute to sustainability more broadly?
Shawna Dilworth 4/05/2023 8:12 AMWork-Life-Balance it keeps me grounded, not allowing work to consume my life, and not allowing my life to interfere with my work. Without work, we don't have that daily driver, which fulfills our need for accomplishments, self motivation, networking with others, etc. I have found that taking 5-10 minutes 2-3 times in a work day, it helps my focus, reduces my stress, gives me clarity, and helps me contribute in a positive way to our work environment. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & EcosystemsWhat was your experience like plogging, or engaging in another way to collect litter while being outside? Was there any item you collected that was unusual that you found?
Shawna Dilworth 4/05/2023 8:07 AMI started taking a break from work and I walk around the entire premise. I thought this is a perfect opportunity to start plogging. I was completely dumbfounded at how much trash there was all around the facility. We are a new location - only been in operation here for 7 months and I am filling a trash bag! -
Shawna Dilworth 4/05/2023 8:01 AMI joined this challenge because I want to make a difference, learn new things, and help encourage others.
