Jessica's actions
Climate & Ecosystems
Ecological & Xeriscape Gardening
SDG 14, 15
Studies show a grass lawn is water intensive and on average it require about 30 percent of a household’s water consumption. I will do one or more of the following actions in my yard or community to conserve water and improve habitat: plant indigenous plants, landscape with water-efficient plants, add mulching, replace a lawn, and/or use eco-friendly fertilizers.
Basic Needs & Security
Volunteer in My Community
SDG 1
I will volunteer 5 hours in my community.
Basic Needs & Security
Know Your Produce
SDG 2
I will become a savvy produce shopper when buying organic and non-organic items.
Education & Livelihood
Host or Join a Cleanup Event
SDG 11, 17
Within my community at home or work, I will organize or attend a local cleanup event.
Education & Livelihood
Stay on the Ground
SDG 11
Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally). As an example, a plane from New York to Los Angeles (~2,450 miles) generates about 65 tons of carbon dioxide.
Climate & Ecosystems
Collect Litter on a Plog / Plalk
SDG 15
Each day, I will go on a plog or plalk for 30 minutes and collect 25 items of litter.
Climate & Ecosystems
Support Local Pollinators
SDG 15
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators to produce fruit. I will plant pollinator-friendly plants in my area to support local pollinators.
Health & Equity
Practice Mindfulness
SDG 3
I will spend 30 minutes each day practicing mindfulness.
Basic Needs & Security
Watch a Documentary About Food, Water, or Basic Needs
SDG 6
I will watch 3 documentaries about food, water, or basic needs.
Economy & Communities
Watch a Documentary About Economy, Energy, or Industry
SDG 7, 9, 12
I will watch 3 documentaries about economy, energy, or industry.
Economy & Communities
Create A Readiness Plan
SDG 9
Each day, I will spend time developing a readiness plan for my household in the event of an emergency.
Climate & Ecosystems
Calculate Your Carbon Impact
SDG 13
I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.
Economy & Communities
Online Energy Audit
SDG 7
I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy.
Education & Livelihood
Research Impact Investing
SDG 8
Using the links provided below, I will research impact investing or my current investment portfolio to determine if they align with my values.
Health & Equity
Spend Time Outside
SDG 3
I will replace 60 minute(s) per day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside exercising, enjoying the sunrise/sunset, gardening, journaling, or practicing gratitude for nature.
Climate & Ecosystems
Explore My Area
SDG 14, 15
Each day, I will spend 30 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).
Basic Needs & Security
Calculate Your Water Footprint
SDG 6
I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste.
Education & Livelihood
Plan A Staycation in Your Community
SDG 11
For an upcoming vacation, I will spend 60 minutes planning out a staycation in my region. For reference, one several hour flight releases the equivalent of nearly 14% of the annual emissions from a car.
Climate & Ecosystems
Advocate for Water Habitat!
SDG 14
I will make 3 phone calls and/or send 1 emails to public officials to advocate for water habitat protection and clean up in my region.
Economy & Communities
Choose Clean/Renewable Energy
SDG 7
I will contact my energy company to find out how to sign up for my utility company's clean/renewable energy option.
Economy & Communities
Analyze Your Utility Bills
SDG 7
I spend 15 minutes analyzing my recent utility bills, which might include electricity, gas, or water to see what my current usage is and determine if I can reduce my energy and water use.
Economy & Communities
Chat With A Nonprofit
SDG 12
I will have a conversation with one or more nonprofit organizations I want to be involved with.
Health & Equity
Advocate for Equitable Food Access
SDG 10
Access to affordable, nutritious food is a food justice issue. I will advocate for equitable food options at work, campus, or in the spaces I frequent by contacting community leaders and/or doing other advocacy actions.
Health & Equity
Watch a Documentary About Equity, Gender, Health, or Peace
SDG 3, 5, 10, 16

REFLECTION QUESTIONEconomy & CommunitiesWhat was the most interesting thing you learned from analyzing your utility bill? What are some ways you can save energy and water?
Jessica Dixon 4/27/2023 11:17 AMSadly, the most interesting thing i found from analyzing my utility bill is all the taxes and surcharges. We are also really good at keeping the heat down in our house in the winter and not using the central air until it is brutally hot outside. We open our windows as much as we can. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & EcosystemsWhat ecological or xeriscape landscaping practices do you have? How has your landscape changed from these practices?
Jessica Dixon 4/27/2023 11:14 AMThe xeriscape I have in my house are a few air plants that I have received from the college over the last couple of years from earth month. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & EcosystemsWhy is water habitat important to you?
Jessica Dixon 4/24/2023 6:18 AMWater habits are important to us because they recycle nutrients, purify water, recharge ground water , and provide habitat for wildlife. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & EcosystemsWhy is it important to take care of pollinators? Do you have a favorite pollinator?
Jessica Dixon 4/24/2023 6:16 AMIt is important to take care of pollinators as they say 35% of the world's food crops depend upon pollinators. If we lose pollinators then we will not have fruits, berries, vegetables and even many animals as they rely on these fruits to live. -
Jessica Dixon 4/24/2023 6:09 AMHonestly, this month has made me even more aware of how we need to protect our planet for future generations. Ww just need to start doing so much more than we already are doing or we will not have an earth to live on. -
Jessica Dixon 4/22/2023 3:00 PMHappy Earth Day everyone!!! My husband and I spent earth day cleaning up our yard and recycling what we found on our walk later that day. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBasic Needs & SecurityWhat is one way you will reduce your water use? What is a practice you already have that helps you reduce your water use?
Jessica Dixon 4/17/2023 12:42 PMOne way to reduce water use is to not let the water run when I am shaving or when I am brushing my teeth. I will admit I run the water when I am brushing my teeth just in case I need it versus when I just need to rinse my brush or rinse my teeth. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBasic Needs & SecurityWhat did you watch, and what was the most important thing you learned in the documentaries you watched? How does what you learned connect to your understanding of climate change and Earth Month?
Jessica Dixon 4/17/2023 12:39 PMI watched the video What you eat matters. My biggest take away from this documentary was that some cures for diseases are actually on what we eat and not on what medicine we need to take. -
Jessica Dixon 4/17/2023 5:48 AMOn my walk this weekend I found 29 plastic bottle which I recycled at Price Chopper. I just amazed how little people think about just dropping a bottle on the ground rather than at least throwing in the trash cans along the trail. I am thinking of seeing if I can get some neighbors together to do a clean up on trail that is at least near our development. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBasic Needs & SecurityWhat was one of your most memorable volunteer experiences, and why? What would you like to volunteer for next, and why?
Jessica Dixon 4/15/2023 10:56 AMThe most memorable part of volunteering is seeing everyone enjoying themselves. I would love to volunteer at an animal shelter or another run/walk event.
