Ben's actions
Climate & Ecosystems
Support Local Pollinators
SDG 15
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators to produce fruit. I will plant pollinator-friendly plants in my area to support local pollinators.
Health & Equity
Spend Time Outside
SDG 3
I will replace 20 minute(s) per day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside exercising, enjoying the sunrise/sunset, gardening, journaling, or practicing gratitude for nature.
Education & Livelihood
Work-Life Balance
SDG 8
During the workday, I will schedule time for daily breaks during work days to practice work-life balance.
Climate & Ecosystems
Drive Less
SDG 13
To reduce CO2 emissions each day, I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips.
Basic Needs & Security
Take 5-Minute Or Less Showers
SDG 6
I will save up to 6 gallons (23 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute showers. Tip: Use a timer to practice or count to 60 a few times.
Basic Needs & Security
Calculate Your Water Footprint
SDG 6
I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste.
Health & Equity
Donate Food
SDG 3, 10
I will find out what food programs are in my area and donate food and/or other items that they request.
Climate & Ecosystems
Calculate Your Carbon Impact
SDG 13
I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.
Health & Equity
Practice Mindfulness
SDG 3
I will spend 5 minutes each day practicing mindfulness.
Economy & Communities
Choose LED Bulbs
SDG 7
I will replace 10 incandescent light bulb(s) with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.
Economy & Communities
Analyze Your Utility Bills
SDG 7
I spend 30 minutes analyzing my recent utility bills, which might include electricity, gas, or water to see what my current usage is and determine if I can reduce my energy and water use.
Education & Livelihood
Host or Join a Cleanup Event
SDG 11, 17
Within my community at home or work, I will organize or attend a local cleanup event.
Climate & Ecosystems
Ecological & Xeriscape Gardening
SDG 14, 15
Studies show a grass lawn is water intensive and on average it require about 30 percent of a household’s water consumption. I will do one or more of the following actions in my yard or community to conserve water and improve habitat: plant indigenous plants, landscape with water-efficient plants, add mulching, replace a lawn, and/or use eco-friendly fertilizers.
Economy & Communities
Chat With A Nonprofit
SDG 12
I will have a conversation with one or more nonprofit organizations I want to be involved with.
Basic Needs & Security
Know Your Produce
SDG 2
I will become a savvy produce shopper when buying organic and non-organic items.
Education & Livelihood
Research Impact Investing
SDG 8
Using the links provided below, I will research impact investing or my current investment portfolio to determine if they align with my values.
Basic Needs & Security
Volunteer in My Community
SDG 1
I will volunteer 6 hours in my community.
Health & Equity
Support Indigenous & First Nations Communities
SDG 10
I will spend 30 learning about the past and present indigenous communities in my regions and what I can do to be supportive.
Education & Livelihood
Stay on the Ground
SDG 11
Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally). As an example, a plane from New York to Los Angeles (~2,450 miles) generates about 65 tons of carbon dioxide.

Ben Brannigan 4/28/2023 11:57 AMExciting development in the world of vegan grocery shopping! I found yogurt in glass containers instead of plastic! This way until I learn how to make my own yogurt I will be able to use less plastic. I also plan to use the jars to make/house gifts for birthdays and christmas! -
Ben Brannigan 4/27/2023 8:25 AMGot my bicycle all tuned up yesterday and was able to enjoy the sunshine with a nice little bike ride! I also got up early and rode a little this morning. I'm all ready to replace short car trips with bicycle commuting instead! -
Ben Brannigan 4/26/2023 9:02 AMMy goals of spending more time outside each day have really been appreciated now that the weather is getting nicer! SO happy to be able to spend some time in the sun away from my screens yesterday especially. I plan on getting the family together to do some bike riding this week and weekend and am hoping the nicer weather will encourage me to drive even less! -
Ben Brannigan 4/25/2023 8:02 AMStill trying hard to get my teenager to turn off lights and not run water, but as a household we've definitely made some great movement toward being more green. Our water and energy usage is down a ton and we've been focusing on composting and making as many zero waste meals as we can. -
Ben Brannigan 4/24/2023 10:18 AMOne of hardest changes I'm in the process of making is switching from paper towels to rags for cleaning. I am happy to that I've made the change but it will take me a while to get used to rinsing and hang drying my rags instead of just grabbing a fresh paper towel. -
Ben Brannigan 4/21/2023 9:19 AMI've been taking a look at how I shop and how I can be more eco conscious there. I usually have my groceries delivered which of course is all in paper or plastic. I can rework my schedule to allow for time for me to personally get my shopping done with my reusable bags and utilizing the bulk isle. I have plans in place to make that switch in my life and I'm excited to see how many other ways I can save on waste by doing my own shopping! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEducation & LivelihoodAfter learning more about investing, how can you increase positive impacts and decrease negative impacts?
Ben Brannigan 4/20/2023 8:45 AMI'm still very new to thinking about investing, but I was glad to have some information about how to make wise and impactful investments. I still have plenty of learning to do, but at least for now I feel like I know how to make small investments with my wallet on a daily basis to create a more positive impact. -
Ben Brannigan 4/20/2023 8:43 AMI'm reflecting on the changes I've made so far to my routine during this eco challenge and looking ahead to see what changes I can continue to make to my life after this focus is over. I found a seed library in my neighborhood that neighbors both take from and donate to that I'm going to take my grandbaby to when we plant our garden soon. I'm also looking into getting a composting system that is functional for the space we have. I'm really excited to continue making changes to my life! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEconomy & CommunitiesWhat was the most interesting thing you learned from analyzing your utility bill? What are some ways you can save energy and water?
Ben Brannigan 4/19/2023 11:12 AMI am definitely always surprised by how much energy and water a 3 person home can use! I know we can save water by taking shorter showers (still working on getting my teen on board for this one!) and making sure to turn off lights and heaters when we aren't in the rooms/at home. Progress is slow going here, but I'm dedicated to figuring it out! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEconomy & CommunitiesWhat was one nonprofit organization that was exciting to learn about?
Ben Brannigan 4/19/2023 11:10 AMI learned about an organization near the neighborhood I live in called wildly kind that is dedicated to brightening people's lives with acts of kindness. I looked up some events happening in the near future and am going to see how I can get involved!
