Basic Needs & Security
Make Zero-Waste Meals
SDG 2
I will cook 1 meals with zero waste each day.
Climate & Ecosystems

On average, a tree absorbs 10 kilograms (22 pounds) of carbon dioxide yearly during the first 20 years. To do my part, I will plant 1 trees in my community, public parks, or backyard.
Basic Needs & Security
Calculate Your Water Footprint
SDG 6
I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste.
Education & Livelihood
Work-Life Balance
SDG 8
During the workday, I will schedule time for daily breaks during work days to practice work-life balance.
Climate & Ecosystems
Learn and Discuss The Climate & Ecosystems SDGs
SDG 13, 14, 15
Each day, I will spend 20 minutes learning about these SDGs and talk with 1 people about what I learned.
Climate & Ecosystems
Citizen's Assembly of Biodiversity Loss
Over the course of the month I will review the findings and recommendations from the Citizen's assembly on Biodiversity Loss and use them to inform actions I can take and I can promote in my workplace
Education & Livelihood
Plan A Staycation in Your Community

For an upcoming vacation, I will spend 60 minutes planning out a staycation in my region. For reference, one several hour flight releases the equivalent of nearly 14% of the annual emissions from a car.
Education & Livelihood
Promote Junior Achievement Ireland
I will spend time promoting the work of Junior Achievement Ireland and recruiting volunteers for the next quarter, while celebrating the work of those who have already volunteered this year
Education & Livelihood

REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & EquityWhat are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time inside and on screens?
Joanne Fitzgerald 4/30/2023 6:34 AMMissing out on everything there is to see and experience in the world around us is no life at all, and sure route to not caring about what happening in the world, and passively enabling its destruction -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & EquityWhat did you watch, and what was the most important thing you learned in the documentaries you watched? How does what you learned connect to your understanding of climate change and Earth Month?
Joanne Fitzgerald 4/29/2023 10:03 AMWatched the suggested series of Nobel Peace Prize-inspired Short films. Each one uniquely compelling, whether about the impact of mines, amputation, human displacement or trying to cross divides with music, I think what struck me was the resilience of the people featured, striving for a way forward in face of destruction or trauma, which is apt for climate change, and the perseverance and determination needed to turn the tide -

(Renting from their site is also a great way to support independent documentary-makers) -
Joanne Fitzgerald 4/21/2023 8:56 AMMy excellently clued-in colleague Justine, has shared this great series of films that have been made to raise awareness about the links between climate change and business

Joanne Fitzgerald 4/19/2023 7:05 AMIn the process of finalising a biodiversity webinar for colleagues with Sarah Kelly from Biodiversity Ireland, to talk about all the good things we can be doing at this time of year for local pollinators

REFLECTION QUESTIONEducation & LivelihoodHow does practicing a work-life balance create a more sustainable life for you? How might it contribute to sustainability more broadly?
Joanne Fitzgerald 4/14/2023 1:47 AMMaintaining the balance between work and life, gives you the breathing room to think about the world outside of work, literally and figuring; to step back and see the bigger picture, which in turn should lead to the realisation that action is needed to stop us falling over a precipice when it comes to climate crisis, and to appreciate nature and the resources and intelligent solution we have all available to us. -
Joanne Fitzgerald 4/13/2023 6:04 AMTook the opportunity to do a lunch time walk around the 'parkland' behind our Cherrywood office. Lots of great wildflower growth but also lots of opportunity to let mowed areas grow out into meadows and wildflower havens for pollinators. Will take this as an action this month to speak to Campus management about their biodiversity planning and possible reduction in landscaping around that area.-
Joanne Fitzgerald 4/27/2023 8:17 AMUpdate: I've learned from the Campus team that there is a sustainability project up and running. Bee hives are arriving soon for the pond area, as well as duck houses and insect hotels. Looping in with the estate manager leading the project to talk about the green spaces in the next week or so. -
Mark Langton 4/14/2023 3:35 AMWould be great if campus connects could have an initiative focused on re-wilding rather than mowing everywhere to cm high grass. Even the small bit of "woodland" below F1 has been chopped into in the last year:/

REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & EcosystemsWhat did you watch, and what was the most important thing you learned in the documentary(ies) you watched? How does what you learned connect to your understanding of climate change and Earth Month?
Joanne Fitzgerald 4/12/2023 2:29 AMThis challenge has been a great excuse to watch lots of documentaries but the stand out so far was last night, watching 'David Attenborough: A life on Our Planet' (available on Netflix) which was his witness statement on climate collapse and the sharp decline he has seen over the course his lifetime. It was incredibly moving, frightening at times, but also gave me hope that we can still turn things around if the right actions are taken now.
