Katherine 's actions
Climate & Ecosystems
Watch a Documentary About Climate Change or Nature
SDG 13, 14, 15
I will watch 5 documentaries about climate change.
Health & Equity
Practice Mindfulness
SDG 3
I will spend 10 minutes each day practicing mindfulness.
Education & Livelihood
Plan A Staycation in Your Community
SDG 11
For an upcoming vacation, I will spend 45 minutes planning out a staycation in my region. For reference, one several hour flight releases the equivalent of nearly 14% of the annual emissions from a car.
Education & Livelihood
Host or Join a Cleanup Event
SDG 11, 17
Within my community at home or work, I will organize or attend a local cleanup event.
Economy & Communities
Create A Readiness Plan
SDG 9
Each day, I will spend time developing a readiness plan for my household in the event of an emergency.
Economy & Communities
Chat With A Nonprofit
SDG 12
I will have a conversation with one or more nonprofit organizations I want to be involved with.
Climate & Ecosystems
Calculate Your Carbon Impact
SDG 13
I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.
Climate & Ecosystems
Collect Litter on a Plog / Plalk
SDG 15
Each day, I will go on a plog or plalk for 10 minutes and collect 2 items of litter.
Basic Needs & Security
Try a New Vegan or Vegetarian Recipe
I will try a new vegan or vegetarian recipe and share how it turns out on the Ecochallenge feed, or with family and friends.
Climate & Ecosystems
Ecological & Xeriscape Gardening
SDG 14, 15
Studies show a grass lawn is water intensive and on average it require about 30 percent of a household’s water consumption. I will do one or more of the following actions in my yard or community to conserve water and improve habitat: plant indigenous plants, landscape with water-efficient plants, add mulching, replace a lawn, and/or use eco-friendly fertilizers.
Basic Needs & Security
Know Your Produce
SDG 2
I will become a savvy produce shopper when buying organic and non-organic items.
Economy & Communities
Mend Clothing
SDG 9
I will mend clothing for myself, family or friends.
Basic Needs & Security
Calculate Your Water Footprint
SDG 6
I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste.
Basic Needs & Security
Volunteer in My Community
SDG 1
I will volunteer 8 hours in my community.
Climate & Ecosystems
Learn and Discuss The Climate & Ecosystems SDGs
SDG 13, 14, 15
Each day, I will spend 15 minutes learning about these SDGs and talk with 1 people about what I learned.
Health & Equity
Support Indigenous & First Nations Communities
SDG 10
I will spend 60 learning about the past and present indigenous communities in my regions and what I can do to be supportive.
Climate & Ecosystems
Support Local Pollinators
SDG 15
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators to produce fruit. I will plant pollinator-friendly plants in my area to support local pollinators.
Health & Equity
Make Cleaning Products
SDG 3
I will make a few homemade cleaning products.
Economy & Communities
Watch a Documentary About Economy, Energy, or Industry
SDG 7, 9, 12
I will watch 1 documentaries about economy, energy, or industry.
Education & Livelihood
Stay on the Ground
SDG 11
Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally). As an example, a plane from New York to Los Angeles (~2,450 miles) generates about 65 tons of carbon dioxide.
Economy & Communities
Navigation skills
Taking a course in wilderness navigation is an addition to creating a readiness plan. Being able to navigate effectively with minimal tools is a serious life skill that can be used in emergency situations.
Economy & Communities
Choose LED Bulbs
SDG 7
I will replace 3 incandescent light bulb(s) with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.
Health & Equity
Spend Time Outside
SDG 3
I will replace 10 minute(s) per day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside exercising, enjoying the sunrise/sunset, gardening, journaling, or practicing gratitude for nature.

REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & EquityWhat did you watch, and what was the most important thing you learned in the documentaries you watched? How does what you learned connect to your understanding of climate change and Earth Month?
Katherine Forsyth 4/28/2023 5:33 PM“Paying the Price for Peace” basically this guy looses his legs protesting a shipment of American weapons. He laid down on the railroad tracks and the train carrying the weapons was ordered not to stop. The biggest message I took away from this is, with any grassroots effort, spend your energy in a positive way. Know there is a difference between what should pass and what actually will in politics . Model your daily behavior after your ideals but don’t expect the same from everyone else. Don’t expect the train to stop for you -
Katherine Forsyth 4/28/2023 1:21 PMToday was full of SDG actions!
Maxine(the Mountaineers librarian) and I walked (instead of drove) to a protected estuary where we have both done volunteer work. We discussed habitats, picked up some trash, discussed “The Bar Mitzvah and the Beast” drank tea with honey from their hive (their yard is a pollinator paradise) while discussing the future of renewable energy and I left with a new pile of books to read! -
Katherine Forsyth 4/26/2023 6:03 PMTaking a wilderness navigation course. It counts towards the creating a readiness daily action. The history of cartography is very interesting and I realized I had only been utilizing about 30% of the actual information a map has. Compasses are the same story 🤣 -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEducation & LivelihoodWhat was your process like for restructuring your trip? How can you avoid more air travel in the future?
Katherine Forsyth 4/23/2023 8:37 AMMeeting a friend in CA. By staying on the ground it will take a lot longer(good thing we are going to a 4/10 schedule). The trade off is that Ican cruise the 101 and stop at some rad beaches which I would not have been able to do while flying.-

REFLECTION QUESTIONBasic Needs & SecurityWhat was one of your most memorable volunteer experiences, and why? What would you like to volunteer for next, and why?
Katherine Forsyth 4/22/2023 11:22 AMHappy Earth Day!!!! You already knew I would be out doing trail work today! Repairing drainage and hauling gravel at Tolmie State Park ❤️ 🌍 -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEconomy & CommunitiesWhat did you watch, and what was the most important thing you learned in the documentaries you watched? How does what you learned connect to your understanding of climate change and Earth Month?
Katherine Forsyth 4/21/2023 9:57 AMOk. So I cheated on this one. I didn’t watch a documentary, I read an article cowritten by my cousin, Meredith Forsyth. Her work in environmentalism, education and feminism in Africa is amazing. I am very proud of her and her work.

REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & EcosystemsWhy is it important to take care of pollinators? Do you have a favorite pollinator?
Katherine Forsyth 4/16/2023 6:58 AMMy favorite pollinators are hummingbirds. There is a variety that lives year round in WA because the residents feed them so reliably. They are territorial birds, so if you get some living in your yard it’s kind of like having some cool pets. It is important to take care of pollinators because our obsession with green grass lawns doesn’t leave them with many available food options. -
