WSP - Emerge Program

Spend 15 minutes learning about the Emerge Program at WSP. Emerge is WSP's strategic alliance program that seeks early-stage companies with novel solutions as strategic partners. Partners get access to in-house subject matter experts, an opportunity to pilot their products/technologies with WSP during the evaluation phase and have access to our client base. Emerge propels our partners by accelerating the product/technology adoption. Having recently launched our 4th cohort, Emerge has accelerated a number of companies whose mission aligns with UN SDGs. • Olokun Minerals • ecoSPEARS • PLAEX Building Systems

What are your thoughts on WSP partnering with smaller companies with the Emerge Program?

I thought it was interesting learning about these smaller companies and innovations, from learning about the filtering of briny waste water to the possibilities of changing building materials. It provides a new point of view and new concepts that may have not been familiar with the audience. I thought it was interesting seeing the comparison of a product like Plaex compared to materials like pre-cast concrete, brick, CLT, etc in terms of cost, time, and even things like water absorption and R-value.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Economy & Communities
What was the most interesting thing you learned from analyzing your utility bill? What are some ways you can save energy and water?

Looking at recent usages, I was at first surprised that my March usage was more than my February usage. However it makes sense. I wasn't feeling well for part of March, so I was home a lot rather than spending my day in the office. I was also out on vacation for a week in February. Both played a big part on my electric bill. I can probably do better about unplugging unused devices to reduce my standby power loads. I also have a few lights that are on a timer and I can probably readjust them better to the season and increasing daylight hours.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Basic Needs & Security
What is one way you will reduce your water use? What is a practice you already have that helps you reduce your water use?

I learned a lot of my water usage comes from my shopping habits and my diet. I should be more mindful of the things that I am buying, especially if certain materials require a lot of water to produce (or grow). As for diet, I can aim to eat less meat. A lot of my indoor water usage comes from laundry and dishwashing. I don't have a dishwasher, so sometimes I can be quite wasteful when I hand wash. I do not own my own personal vehicle, nor do I have a yard, so by not having a car or yard, I have been able to reduce some of my water usage in some aspects.
