Tony's actions
Basic Needs & Security
Reduce Animal Product Consumption
SDG 2
One kilogram of beef and cheese emits 71kg and 24kg of greenhouse gasses, while 1kg of rice, grains, and legumes emits between 2-4kg. Fruits, vegetables, and nuts emit less than 1kg per 1kg. I will reduce my climate impact by enjoying 1 meatless meals and/or 1 vegan meals each day this week.
Education & Livelihood
Share Your Eco Habits
SDG 11
Through my Earth Month Ecochallenge feed, I will share with others an environmentally friendly habit I have cultivated.
Basic Needs & Security
Make Zero-Waste Meals
SDG 2
I will cook 1 meals with zero waste each day.
Health & Equity
Spend Time Outside
SDG 3
I will replace 20 minute(s) per day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside exercising, enjoying the sunrise/sunset, gardening, journaling, or practicing gratitude for nature.
Climate & Ecosystems
Watch a Documentary About Climate Change or Nature
SDG 13, 14, 15
I will watch 1 documentaries about climate change.
Basic Needs & Security
Volunteer in My Community

I will try a new vegan or vegetarian recipe and share how it turns out on the Ecochallenge feed, or with family and friends.
Economy & Communities
Analyze Your Utility Bills
SDG 7
I spend 20 minutes analyzing my recent utility bills, which might include electricity, gas, or water to see what my current usage is and determine if I can reduce my energy and water use.
Basic Needs & Security
Know Your Produce
SDG 2
I will become a savvy produce shopper when buying organic and non-organic items.
Health & Equity
Support Indigenous & First Nations Communities
SDG 10
I will spend 20 learning about the past and present indigenous communities in my regions and what I can do to be supportive.
Climate & Ecosystems
Calculate Your Carbon Impact
SDG 13
I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.
Education & Livelihood
Host or Join a Cleanup Event
SDG 11, 17
Within my community at home or work, I will organize or attend a local cleanup event.
Economy & Communities
Choose LED Bulbs
SDG 7
I will replace 2 incandescent light bulb(s) with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.
Basic Needs & Security
Calculate Your Water Footprint
SDG 6
I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste.
Climate & Ecosystems
Support Local Pollinators
SDG 15
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators to produce fruit. I will plant pollinator-friendly plants in my area to support local pollinators.
Basic Needs & Security
Take 5-Minute Or Less Showers
SDG 6
I will save up to 6 gallons (23 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute showers. Tip: Use a timer to practice or count to 60 a few times.
Climate & Ecosystems
Ecological & Xeriscape Gardening
SDG 14, 15
Studies show a grass lawn is water intensive and on average it require about 30 percent of a household’s water consumption. I will do one or more of the following actions in my yard or community to conserve water and improve habitat: plant indigenous plants, landscape with water-efficient plants, add mulching, replace a lawn, and/or use eco-friendly fertilizers.
Economy & Communities
Install a Heat Pump

I will install a heat pump in my home or business.
Climate & Ecosystems
Plant a Tree

On average, a tree absorbs 10 kilograms (22 pounds) of carbon dioxide yearly during the first 20 years. To do my part, I will plant 2 trees in my community, public parks, or backyard.
Health & Equity
Advocate for Equitable Food Access
SDG 10
Access to affordable, nutritious food is a food justice issue. I will advocate for equitable food options at work, campus, or in the spaces I frequent by contacting community leaders and/or doing other advocacy actions.

REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & EcosystemsWhat is one way you will reduce your carbon footprint? What is a practice you already have that helps you reduce your carbon footprint?
Tony George 4/06/2023 10:01 AMDoing the carbon footprint self assessment was really interesting. I thought driving an electric vehicle and having a house that was all electric (with 99% renewable energy to boot) that I'd be a climate champion, instead I'm a glutton. Ugh.
This was helpful in identifying areas that I can improve and likely reduce my carbon footprint. Flying places does not help!! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & EcosystemsHow is planting trees good for your mental, physical, and spiritual health?
Tony George 4/05/2023 2:20 PMI just got done with a big landscaping project at my house and we planted over 15 trees in addition to 35 rhododendrons and lots of other plants. I still have a few things to fill in and plan to plant a couple of additional trees this month.
I love working outside in the yard (except for weeding- but even that can be ok with a good audio book). -
Tony George 4/05/2023 8:10 AMI started off the month over the weekend golfing with some of my college buddies both Saturday and Sunday. That was over five hours both days spent outside which was great! Yesterday I went kayaking after work for an hour and hope to get out every day this month for at least an hour of outside activity- walking, biking, kayaking or golfing!! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBasic Needs & SecurityWhat is one way you will reduce your water use? What is a practice you already have that helps you reduce your water use?
Tony George 4/04/2023 8:26 AMI take short showers! I also wait until the dishwasher is full before running a load of dishes.
