Veggie garden 2023 is off to a great start. Tomatoes, tomatillos, peppers, celery, onions, kale, amaranth, and companion flowers like marigolds and cosmos are all sprouting in trays. Not a veggie per se, but this year's surprise favorite, is the large number of sycamore trees I sprouted from seeds I picked up off the ground in my neighborhood. Never tried growing a tree from seed before, but why not?

For a sustainable cleaning product, I clipped a few pieces of an evergreen tree and soaked them in vinegar for a few weeks. The result is a pine-scented vinegar which I dilute with water to degrease the stove after cooking, or spray in the shower to remove soap residue.

Springtime at my place = MUD and a flooded back yard. In the Fall, I implemented a rain garden area to drain off excess runoff water and make our small yard more walkable during springtime. I dug out a low spot, planted several species of plants that can theoretically cope with flood water and also heavy clay soils which dry out in summer. Early indications are that it is successful. The paths are drier, the plants are emerging from winter after sitting with 6 inches of water on top of them, and the water has soaked into the ground where it can be accessed by our trees.

I try to follow a few basic eco-friendly practices to reduce my overall footprint on the earth (composting kitchen and garden waste to add to my garden, incorporating a few meat free dinners per month, supporting local farmers, and growing a little of my own food). This year, my husband and I purchased a 5 acre plot of vacant land and are planning to turn it into a small permaculture food forest. This past weekend, we began the first phase of a multi-year planting program by planting several types of berry bushes. Next up: hazelnuts and serviceberry trees.

What was it like to practice mindfulness? If this is a practice for you already, what was something new you understood in practicing during Earth Month?

Mindfulness is not easy to add. Many distractions and thoughts intrude.
