Jordan's actions
Climate & Ecosystems
Ecological & Xeriscape Gardening
SDG 14, 15
Studies show a grass lawn is water intensive and on average it require about 30 percent of a household’s water consumption. I will do one or more of the following actions in my yard or community to conserve water and improve habitat: plant indigenous plants, landscape with water-efficient plants, add mulching, replace a lawn, and/or use eco-friendly fertilizers.
Education & Livelihood
Research Impact Investing
SDG 8
Using the links provided below, I will research impact investing or my current investment portfolio to determine if they align with my values.
Education & Livelihood
Share Your Eco Habits
SDG 11
Through my Earth Month Ecochallenge feed, I will share with others an environmentally friendly habit I have cultivated.
Health & Equity
Spend Time Outside
SDG 3
I will replace 20 minute(s) per day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside exercising, enjoying the sunrise/sunset, gardening, journaling, or practicing gratitude for nature.
Health & Equity
Communicate Constructively
SDG 16
I will use the communication methods I read about to practice effective, compassionate, and nonviolent communication with someone I interact with regularly (i.e., my roommate, parents, co-worker, partner, classmates, or children).
Education & Livelihood
Watch a Documentary About Education or Work
SDG 4
I will watch 1 documentaries about education or work.
Climate & Ecosystems
Plant a Tree
SDG 15
On average, a tree absorbs 10 kilograms (22 pounds) of carbon dioxide yearly during the first 20 years. To do my part, I will plant 1 trees in my community, public parks, or backyard.
Basic Needs & Security
Practice A Sharing Economy
SDG 1
Each day, I will engage in a sharing economy among my family, friends, and neighbors. A sharing economy is when goods and services are shared between individuals though peer and community networks.
Climate & Ecosystems
Explore My Area
SDG 14, 15
Each day, I will spend 10 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).
Economy & Communities
Mend Clothing
SDG 9
I will mend clothing for myself, family or friends.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Jordan Grigg 4/06/2023 7:51 AMWith this beautiful weather coming this weekend, some may be tempted to garden. Before heading into the garden, condsider soil compaction. Soil compaction happens when pressure is put on soil that moves the particles closer together, and they do not move back. We usually see this problem in agricultural soils, but it can show up in gardens too. Soils are particularly susceptible to compaction in the spring when the ground is wet. Compaction impacts a plant's ability to access nutrients and water in the soil by stunting root growth, reduces water infiltration and contributes to soil erosion. By getting into the garden too early while it is still wet, you can cause compaction. Your soil is ready for planting when you can squeeze it into a ball and then poke with one finger and it falls apart. If it stays together, give it a little more time to dry out!

Susan Healey 4/24/2023 6:06 AMReally good points by Jordan and Karen. It can be tempting to get into the garden when the weather turns warmer, but holding off is important! -
Karen Chisholme 4/06/2023 10:43 AMMany pollinators overwinter in soil and fallen leaves too. Disturbing them too early in the season could put them in danger as temperatures still fluctuate.

REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & EcosystemsWhat ecological or xeriscape landscaping practices do you have? How has your landscape changed from these practices?
Jordan Grigg 4/06/2023 7:37 AMI am frost seeding micro-clover into my lawn this year! It is the perfect time of year to fill in patched with clover, rather than grass. Some benefits of clover include nitrogen fixation (great for the other plants in your yard), it stays green longer during periods of drought and supports pollinators during its flowering stages. If you can find the micro variety, you'll have to mow less. Even just a little bit of clover can do a lot of good in a lawn!
