Basic Needs & Security
Reduce Animal Product Consumption

REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & EcosystemsWhy is it important to take care of pollinators? Do you have a favorite pollinator?
Julie Hanson 4/20/2023 3:01 PMDid you know that being a "lazy" gardener is good for pollinators? I always let some of my garden plants like chives, radishes and garlic go to flower to attract more bees to my garden. They also love the flowers from my new favorite thing to grow: Tomatillos! (aka ground tomato) These grow well here and provide a lot of food. I noticed a new-to-me pollinator on these plants too. They are a very small bee, smaller than 1/2 inch long, and have a shiny black, slightly iridescent body. If you try to get closer to get a look, they move away from you, so I've named them "Shy Bees." I'm sure they have a "real" name, but I haven't figured that out yet!
I've also purchased pollinator friendly Echinacia and Phlox starts to plant, but I haven't been able to dodge the rain enough in order to plant them!

REFLECTION QUESTIONEducation & LivelihoodHow does practicing a work-life balance create a more sustainable life for you? How might it contribute to sustainability more broadly?
Julie Hanson 4/14/2023 11:50 AMI'm so happy to see everything come alive outside after a long winter. I enjoy growing my own food, and just started seeds for this year's garden. Now, just have to wait for the magic to happen! I never tire of the wonder of the miracle of life - with just a little love, a tiny seed has the ability to grow into something amazing that sustains us! It reminds me of one of my favorite poems from childhood by Dorothy Frances Gurney: "The kiss of the sun for pardon, The song of the birds for mirth - One is nearer God's heart in a garden - Than anywhere else on Earth."
