Education & Livelihood
Friday's for Future - Sustainability Action Plan
Attend the Friday's for Future presentation from an architect at Miller Hull - one of PAE's close client that helped design the Bullitt Center and many other PAE projects. The presentation was on their Sustainability Action Plan they have implemented in their company and how it has been going. I learned a lot about embodied carbon and how they analyze their work the lower their embodied carbon as much as possible. I learned more about Red List items and how they are doing their part to get clients to move away from these items and do more to lower their embodied carbon on the buildings they own and are building.

Basic Needs & Security
Reduce Animal Product Consumption
SDG 2
One kilogram of beef and cheese emits 71kg and 24kg of greenhouse gasses, while 1kg of rice, grains, and legumes emits between 2-4kg. Fruits, vegetables, and nuts emit less than 1kg per 1kg. I will reduce my climate impact by enjoying 3 meatless meals and/or 3 vegan meals each day this week.
Climate & Ecosystems

Patrick Hritz 4/28/2023 10:54 AMWe had a planting party at the Bullitt Center balcony! We replanting the Grizzly room plants and moved around the ones that were out growing their planter boxes. We have a bunch on new plants thanks to Alex Ratcliff and some new baby pepper plants thanks to James Sullivan.

REFLECTION QUESTIONEducation & LivelihoodHow does practicing a work-life balance create a more sustainable life for you? How might it contribute to sustainability more broadly?
Patrick Hritz 4/21/2023 3:54 PMIt gives me more energy and happiness throughout the day. Today I would take little breaks to play a game of ping pong in the office and it would give me a nice fresh breather from work. When I would come back to my desk I would have more motivation to be productive and get back into drafting and working on my projects. Having a balance during my day helps me stay focused and mindful about what I am doing and why I am doing it. Also thanks to our great Seattle Wellness team we have been doing yoga in the office once a week and that has been a huge help in keeping me relaxed and happy throughout the work day. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBasic Needs & SecurityWhat was the tastiest meatless or vegan meal you ever had or had recently? Did you make it? Can you share a recipe?
Patrick Hritz 4/11/2023 8:37 AMDefinitely a butternut squash mac and cheese. It was not vegan though. It had cheese and cream, but the amount was reduced by more than half of a regular homemade mac and cheese.
Easy to make too!-

REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & EquityWhat was it like to practice mindfulness? If this is a practice for you already, what was something new you understood in practicing during Earth Month?
Patrick Hritz 4/10/2023 5:38 PMIt is calming and soothing when sitting and meditating. Something new I am trying is mindfully stay still in a yoga squat for 10 min which is exhausting but fun and different for me. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & EquityWhat are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time inside and on screens?
Patrick Hritz 4/10/2023 5:34 PMThe implications are that they are lazy and not physically active. At least that's what I think the general implications are. I do not think it is always true. One way I try to challenge that is doing pushups/squats at most every hour/day or when its a busy day I'll do it when I am syncing/saving a Revit model or printing a set for review. There is always a way to fit that stuff into your work day!!!! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & EquityWhat was a linking factor across this group of SDGs?
Patrick Hritz 4/07/2023 11:00 AMI think there are a number of existing factors across this group of SDG. One was women. Education for women, promotion of equal rights and representation of women in the work force and political arena. Another was COVID and war linking global health and equity for all. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & EcosystemsWhat is one way you will reduce your carbon footprint? What is a practice you already have that helps you reduce your carbon footprint?
Patrick Hritz 4/04/2023 6:00 PMOne way to reduce is to limit long distance flight to one a year. One way I practice reducing my carbon footprint is through long distance drives instead of flying. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBasic Needs & SecurityWhat is one way you will reduce your water use? What is a practice you already have that helps you reduce your water use?
Patrick Hritz 4/04/2023 5:37 PMTake shorter showers! Using a bucket to grab water under my kitchen sink while I wait for it to heat up.
