Hillarie's actions
Health & Equity
Practice Mindfulness
SDG 3
I will spend 10 minutes each day practicing mindfulness.
Health & Equity
Spend Time Outside
SDG 3
I will replace 30 minute(s) per day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside exercising, enjoying the sunrise/sunset, gardening, journaling, or practicing gratitude for nature.
Economy & Communities
Chat With A Nonprofit
SDG 12
I will have a conversation with one or more nonprofit organizations I want to be involved with.
Climate & Ecosystems
Collect Litter on a Plog / Plalk
SDG 15
Each day, I will go on a plog or plalk for 30 minutes and collect 30 items of litter.
Climate & Ecosystems
Support Local Pollinators
SDG 15
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators to produce fruit. I will plant pollinator-friendly plants in my area to support local pollinators.
Basic Needs & Security
Volunteer in My Community
SDG 1
I will volunteer 5 hours in my community.
Basic Needs & Security
Try a New Vegan or Vegetarian Recipe
I will try a new vegan or vegetarian recipe and share how it turns out on the Ecochallenge feed, or with family and friends.
Basic Needs & Security
Know Your Produce
SDG 2
I will become a savvy produce shopper when buying organic and non-organic items.
Basic Needs & Security
Take 5-Minute Or Less Showers
SDG 6
I will save up to 6 gallons (23 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute showers. Tip: Use a timer to practice or count to 60 a few times.
Climate & Ecosystems
Ecological & Xeriscape Gardening
SDG 14, 15
Studies show a grass lawn is water intensive and on average it require about 30 percent of a household’s water consumption. I will do one or more of the following actions in my yard or community to conserve water and improve habitat: plant indigenous plants, landscape with water-efficient plants, add mulching, replace a lawn, and/or use eco-friendly fertilizers.
Education & Livelihood
Plan A Staycation in Your Community
SDG 11
For an upcoming vacation, I will spend 60 minutes planning out a staycation in my region. For reference, one several hour flight releases the equivalent of nearly 14% of the annual emissions from a car.
Economy & Communities
Mend Clothing
SDG 9
I will mend clothing for myself, family or friends.
Economy & Communities
Analyze Your Utility Bills
SDG 7
I spend 10 minutes analyzing my recent utility bills, which might include electricity, gas, or water to see what my current usage is and determine if I can reduce my energy and water use.
Education & Livelihood
Work-Life Balance
SDG 8
During the workday, I will schedule time for daily breaks during work days to practice work-life balance.

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Hillarie Hunt 4/28/2023 8:14 AMI've not done as much as I'd hoped or planned, but I've definitely increased my awareness and plan to do more going forward. -
Hillarie Hunt 4/27/2023 8:23 AMWe also had our HVAC technician do an annual inspection of our furnace and central air system. He replaced the air filter (though we do this regularly) and made sure that the system is perfectly optimized for efficiency and comfort. -
Hillarie Hunt 4/27/2023 8:21 AMWe had a technician from our gas company come out to do an annual evaluation to make sure we are running eveything as efficiently as possible. He replaced a faulty part, tuned our heat pump up, and optimized our thermostat. We're good to go! -
Hillarie Hunt 4/27/2023 8:01 AMMy husband is learning about our home's water sources in Vancouver, WA. All of the City’s drinking water comes from wells. We have 40 wells in our water system, spread out over nine sites in our service area, and several have been shut down due to high concentrations of PFAs. We have water filtration in our refrigerator, and are exploring additional water filter options to limit our PFA exposure. We're also reflecting on other regions and countries that don't have access to clean water, and counting our many blessings. -
Hillarie Hunt 4/25/2023 8:36 AMDuring our Earth Day clean-up activity last Friday, we were given trash grabber tools so that we didn't have to bend down to pick up garbage. I have decided to buy one of these so I can more easily pick up trash on my daily walks. -
Hillarie Hunt 4/21/2023 11:38 AMHappy (early) Earth Day! Our company-sponsored clean-up day was a huge success (but man, am I tired). -
Hillarie Hunt 4/20/2023 7:37 AMWe replaced about 50 square feet of the grass in our backyard with drought-tolerant wildflowers and it's exciting to see them starting to sprout up! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEconomy & CommunitiesWhat was the most interesting thing you learned from analyzing your utility bill? What are some ways you can save energy and water?
Hillarie Hunt 4/17/2023 8:05 AMWe do well in the winter, because we like it cooler, but will have to make some effort in the summer to keep costs down when things heat up. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEducation & LivelihoodWhat place in your region are you most excited to visit during your staycation?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONEconomy & CommunitiesWhat was it like to mend your clothing? If you are skilled at mending, what tips do you have for others?
Hillarie Hunt 4/17/2023 8:00 AMI'm passable at mending by hand and I've got a sewing machine for bigger tasks. I'm no expert, but I know to double the thread and make tight stitches for added strength and durability.
