Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

I was manning the booth for the alternative transport day so I did not see every other booth, but I did get to visit the Mushroom booth (I believe it was the mushroom mania club?) and it was INCREDIBLE. We can do so much with fungi!!!!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Climate & Ecosystems
Was this hard for you to do?

    Lara Jenkins's avatar
    Lara Jenkins 4/27/2023 11:10 AM
Checking in one day late, but no it was not at all hard for me to do since I take the bus every day! The bus route I take is not an entirely popular one, so I feel like my regular ridership contributes significantly to the statistics and I hope this allows the route to remain and grow in popularity!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Climate & Ecosystems
What did you watch, and what was the most important thing you learned in the documentary(ies) you watched? How does what you learned connect to your understanding of climate change and Earth Month?

    Lara Jenkins 4/27/2023 11:09 AM
I watched the documentary series Our Planet, 2019, narrated by David Attenborough. I actually enjoy watching nature documentaries with my dog, because she gets so engaged with the animals and I get to learn at the same time!

I think the most important thing I took from this documentary is just a reminder of how absolute vast this planet is, and how many species can have their lives completely destroyed by human behaviour. On the flip side, seeing all the creatures of the world inspires me to always do better in terms of protecting our Earth.

I don't think there is ANY animal documentary out there without David Attenborough narrating it! LOL

What was the dish you made, and how did it turn out? What did it feel like to try a new recipe? If you can share a picture, please do!

The staff cohort of the Sustainable Happiness class had a potluck today to celebrate our successful projects and we brought many vegan snacks, meals and desserts!

I made vegan breakfast oat bars and they were a moderate success! They seemed a bit mushy at first but firmed up in the freezer and tasted great!

It was my first time using that recipe and I did have to make substitutions in order to make it completely plant based. I do cook/bake vegan a lot of the time, but usually always the same recipes over and over so it was really exciting to make something new! :)

They were yummy, and I felt that because they were homemade that they were healthy!

What place in your region are you most excited to visit during your staycation?

    Lara Jenkins's avatar
    Lara Jenkins 4/12/2023 7:08 AM
During my staycation I will be visiting Sherbrooke and I am most excited to go hiking in the Orford area!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Economy & Communities
What was the most interesting thing you learned from analyzing your utility bill? What are some ways you can save energy and water?

    Lara Jenkins's avatar
    Lara Jenkins 4/12/2023 7:07 AM
I knew that heating the house took a lot of electricity, but by looking at my bill I realized that 82% of my electricity use is just heating and hot water! I will be looking more closely at how to reduce my heating costs for next winter. In the meantime, I will try to reduce the amount of hot water used in my household.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Climate & Ecosystems
How can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place? Was there a new place in your region that was exciting to learn about and visit?

While I was technically exploring an area I am already familiar with, I decided to explore it in a new way. Using the Merlin app, I identified 4 different bird species based on their bird calls!
