    Economy & Communities
What one thing will you do right away to reduce your waste? What is the second thing you will do?

I have decided to start using laundry sheets instead of liquid soap. I haven't investigated how much waste is created in making the sheets, but I am positive that the packaging produces none. Another thing I am going to start doing is bringing my own reusable container to restaurants so my leftovers do not go into a disposable container.

What did you watch, and what was the most important thing you learned in the documentaries you watched? How does what you learned connect to your understanding of climate change and Earth Month?

I watched a documentary called Wiring the Amazon. There is a small (95 people small) town in Peru that is very isolated. They do not even have a road out to get to other towns. The government was trying to set up Internet for them, but it was a long process. They eventually succeeded and the people had laptops so it was all good. But then the Internet broke and it took a year and a half to fix it. By the time the Internet was fixed, the laptops were gone (or broken?) so it isn't doing anyone much good. The town leader isn't very interested in getting new laptops because he doesn't think they help with educating the children. This documentary was made in 2014, so I tried to discover if anything has changed since then. I did find that Internet para Toda started a program with the intent to bring connectivity to 6 million people in over 30,000 rural Peruvian areas, so hopefully they now have access.

I watched The Lost Mountain, which is about a scientific expedition to do research on Mount Lico in Mozambique. The mountain is believed to have had no human interaction, so they wanted to determine what climate change alone (without human interference) is doing to the environment. Unfortunately, the results were not detailed in the documentary, but it was a very interesting watch.

I watched Fire in Paradise. I remember watching news coverage when it happened, but I had no idea how very devastating it was. The area was in a drought, experiencing less than a fifth of normal rainfall, and the powerful easterly winds dropped the humidity, creating the conditions that allowed this fire to spread so aggressively and rapidly. I won't say that I understand exactly the science behind climate change, but it is clear that the volatile weather events in California are caused by climate change.
