Jeffrey's actions
Climate & Ecosystems
Collect Litter on a Plog / Plalk
SDG 15
Each day, I will go on a plog or plalk for 30 minutes and collect 10 items of litter.
Economy & Communities
Analyze Your Utility Bills
SDG 7
I spend 60 minutes analyzing my recent utility bills, which might include electricity, gas, or water to see what my current usage is and determine if I can reduce my energy and water use.
Education & Livelihood
Host or Join a Cleanup Event
SDG 11, 17
Within my community at home or work, I will organize or attend a local cleanup event.
Basic Needs & Security
Reduce Animal Product Consumption
SDG 2
One kilogram of beef and cheese emits 71kg and 24kg of greenhouse gasses, while 1kg of rice, grains, and legumes emits between 2-4kg. Fruits, vegetables, and nuts emit less than 1kg per 1kg. I will reduce my climate impact by enjoying 2 meatless meals and/or 0 vegan meals each day this week.

REFLECTION QUESTIONEconomy & CommunitiesWhat was the most interesting thing you learned from analyzing your utility bill? What are some ways you can save energy and water?
Jeffrey Kohne 4/23/2023 9:54 PMAbout 18 months ago, our household enrolled in our electric company's "peak pricing" program where you pay less for electricity during off-peak times but higher during peak times. We now run our dishwasher and clothes washing machines late at night or early morning. Although we save only a handful of dollars per month with this pricing model, I believe just the awareness of when we use electricity has led to an overall reduction of power usage since the time we enrolled. By analyzing our electricity bill over the past 4 years, there is a downward trend both in terms of kWh and $. -
Jeffrey Kohne 4/22/2023 4:16 PMHelped to co-host an Earth Day event in the city in which I live. We had about 70 people, and removed 3 dumpsters of invasive plants (blackberries, holly, ivy, etc.). And, also planted about 170 Oregon Grape plants. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBasic Needs & SecurityWhat was the tastiest meatless or vegan meal you ever had or had recently? Did you make it? Can you share a recipe?
Jeffrey Kohne 4/15/2023 7:29 PMIt's not fancy, but stir fried vegetables (cooked in oil + teriyaki sauce) over brown rice topped with sweet chili sauce. And naan bread on the side. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & EcosystemsWhat was your experience like plogging, or engaging in another way to collect litter while being outside? Was there any item you collected that was unusual that you found?
Jeffrey Kohne 4/11/2023 7:53 PMIt is gratifying to see the steady reduction of litter in the park where I pickup. Each time I go there, I find fewer and fewer items of litter. I also get a frequent "kudos" from others who walk the park.-
Stefanie Bertuch 4/24/2023 12:33 AMI can confirm that. The cleaner the environment is and the less rubbish is lying around, the better other people take care not to leave anything lying around.
