-
Fred Koshen 5/01/2023 4:20 AMI learned it's much easier to track various ways to help the environment and conserve with just a few changes to my lifestyle. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEconomy & CommunitiesWhat did you watch, and what was the most important thing you learned in the documentaries you watched? How does what you learned connect to your understanding of climate change and Earth Month?
Fred Koshen 4/30/2023 3:42 PMWatched a documentary on the impact that general industry/manufacturing has on climate change. It's astonishing that something we take for granted uses so much energy and isn't necessarily good for the environment. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEducation & LivelihoodWhat did you watch, and what was the most important thing you learned in the documentaries you watched? How does what you learned connect to your understanding of climate change and Earth Month?
Fred Koshen 4/30/2023 12:46 PM"How America Works" is an amazing program that shows the everyday labor that we take for granted, from mining copper to laying massive pipeline. I gave me a new appreciation for these workers. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEconomy & CommunitiesWhat was the most interesting thing you learned from analyzing your utility bill? What are some ways you can save energy and water?
Fred Koshen 4/30/2023 12:44 PMI actually started analyzing my utility bills including how much "run-time" my HVAC is on each month. It now helps me to recognize various patterns and how I can continue to decrease electricity and natural gas consumption. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBasic Needs & SecurityWhat did you watch, and what was the most important thing you learned in the documentaries you watched? How does what you learned connect to your understanding of climate change and Earth Month?
Fred Koshen 4/30/2023 12:42 PMI watched a documentary on California redwoods and in search of the tallest redwood tree. This included scientists actually climbing these redwoods to gain valuable information including how old a particular tree actually was. It was amazing how old some of these trees actually were. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & EcosystemsWhy is it important to take care of pollinators? Do you have a favorite pollinator?
Fred Koshen 4/30/2023 12:40 PMHoney bees are my favorite "pollinators as are hummingbirds. I never knew that hummingbirds were pollinators too until I watched a documentary on various pollinators, which included these remarkable birds. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEducation & LivelihoodHow does practicing a work-life balance create a more sustainable life for you? How might it contribute to sustainability more broadly?
Fred Koshen 4/28/2023 5:30 AMI find that practicing work-life balance lets me do the things I really like to do which translates to a better me. It makes me happy to be able to do these things and to look forward to "clearing my mind" after a busy day at work. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & EquityWhat is easy for you to do when having a constructive conversation and what is challenging? What tips do you have for having a constructive conversation?
Fred Koshen 4/28/2023 5:17 AMWhen I'm trying to communicate constructively, I try to be as honest and upfront as possible so there is no question to what my message is. Unfortunately, sometimes I have to preface my conversation with "to be brutally honest..." but it seems to work. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEconomy & CommunitiesChanging lightbulbs is an excellent first step toward energy efficiency! What's next for you?
Fred Koshen 4/26/2023 5:11 AMWhile I'd like to make the leap to "smart bulbs" the cost is what's holding me back. Although the benefits seem to be there, I'm just not sure I'm ready to make an investment in that technology. I remember LED bulbs were quite expensive compared to today's prices so I'm hoping the smart bulb technology takes a downturn eventually as well. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEconomy & CommunitiesHow do you anticipate replacing your thermostats for programmable ones will positively impact your life?
Fred Koshen 4/25/2023 5:05 AMI've replaced my t-stat and what a difference it makes. I can now chart how much energy I'm saving, run-time of my HVAC unit and I can also compare it to a community board to see if I'm savings more or less energy than my surrounding community.
