Climate & Ecosystems
Calculate Your Carbon Impact
SDG 13
I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.
Economy & Communities
Analyze Your Utility Bills
SDG 7
I spend 10 minutes analyzing my recent utility bills, which might include electricity, gas, or water to see what my current usage is and determine if I can reduce my energy and water use.
Climate & Ecosystems
TAKE EMERSON'S SUSTAINABILITY TRAINING
I will take at least one of the Emerson Global Environmental Sustainability Training modules available on the Global Learning Center to learn more about this important topic for the company.
Climate & Ecosystems
Sign up to receive news on Sustainability at Emerson
I will sign up to the Sustainability Aficionados distribution list to receive global news on sustainability at Emerson, including world news and Greening OF, BY and WITH news.
Climate & Ecosystems
Plant a Tree
SDG 15
On average, a tree absorbs 10 kilograms (22 pounds) of carbon dioxide yearly during the first 20 years. To do my part, I will plant 3 trees in my community, public parks, or backyard.
Climate & Ecosystems
Attend Emerson's Global Earth Week Webinar
On Wed 19th April, I will attend Emerson's Global Earth Week Webinar to learn about the importance of individual action in our collective journey to sustainability.
Climate & Ecosystems
TAKE PICTURES AND SHARE ON LINKEDIN
I will take at least one photograph that shows how sustainability / the energy transition already shows up in my daily life (e.g., electric vehicles, paper packaging…), and I will post it on LinkedIn with the hashtags #EarthMonthEcochallenge #EarthMonthAtEmerson.
Economy & Communities
Replace Manual Thermostats
SDG 7, 9, 12
I will replace manual thermostats with smart ones.

I will spend 5 learning about the past and present indigenous communities in my regions and what I can do to be supportive.
Education & Livelihood
Stay on the Ground
SDG 11
Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally). As an example, a plane from New York to Los Angeles (~2,450 miles) generates about 65 tons of carbon dioxide.
Health & Equity
Practice Mindfulness

Climate & Ecosystems

REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & EcosystemsHow is planting trees good for your mental, physical, and spiritual health?
Christine Lee 4/30/2023 8:25 AMPlanting trees can help reduce stress and anxiety for the people living especially in city area. Looking at plants and flowers, whether indoors or outdoors, is a peaceful activity free of worries. It encourages living in the present moment and engages the senses. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEconomy & CommunitiesWhat did you watch, and what was the most important thing you learned in the documentaries you watched? How does what you learned connect to your understanding of climate change and Earth Month?
Christine Lee 4/30/2023 8:19 AMWatched The Power of Big Oil documentary. There are 3 parts : Part 1 charts the fossil fuel industry’s early research on climate change and investigates industry efforts to sow seeds of doubt about the science. Part 2 explores the industry’s efforts to stall climate policy, even as evidence about climate change grew more certain in the new millennium. And as leading climate scientists issue new warnings about climate change, Part 3 examines how the fossil fuel industry worked to delay the transition to renewable energy sources — including by promoting natural gas as a cleaner alternative. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & EquityHow have you reduced your purchasing habits and what would you like to do next to reduce your consumption habits?
Christine Lee 4/30/2023 7:30 AMThink first before buying. Always ask whether the material is recyclable and only buy the necessary, -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & EquityWhat was it like to practice mindfulness? If this is a practice for you already, what was something new you understood in practicing during Earth Month?
Christine Lee 4/30/2023 7:19 AMPractice mindfulness can improve brain health and slowing brain aging, reducing stress, anxiety, and depression symptoms,
increasing a sense of well-being, helping with pain management
improving quality of life for those living with chronic conditions. During Earth month, I practice mindfulness is to focus on the breath, resting your attention on the inhalation and exhalation repeatedly. -

REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & EquityWhat are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time inside and on screens?
Christine Lee 4/29/2023 8:30 PMThe more time you spend looking at a screen, the less time you spend interacting in person with others. This makes it more difficult to establish interpersonal connections and strong relationships, which are important for mental health and the health of the community at large -
