Climate & Ecosystems
Explore My Area
SDG 14, 15
Each day, I will spend 30 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).
Climate & Ecosystems
Ecological & Xeriscape Gardening
SDG 14, 15
Studies show a grass lawn is water intensive and on average it require about 30 percent of a household’s water consumption. I will do one or more of the following actions in my yard or community to conserve water and improve habitat: plant indigenous plants, landscape with water-efficient plants, add mulching, replace a lawn, and/or use eco-friendly fertilizers.
Economy & Communities
Mend Clothing
SDG 9
I will mend clothing for myself, family or friends.
Health & Equity
Spend Time Outside
SDG 3
I will replace 45 minute(s) per day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside exercising, enjoying the sunrise/sunset, gardening, journaling, or practicing gratitude for nature.
Health & Equity
Track My Purchases
SDG 10
Each day, I will track my purchases to identify my spending habits. This will allow me to see what purchases can be reduced.
Economy & Communities
Replace Manual Thermostats
SDG 7, 9, 12
I will replace manual thermostats with smart ones.
Health & Equity
Support Indigenous & First Nations Communities
SDG 10
I will spend 45 learning about the past and present indigenous communities in my regions and what I can do to be supportive.
Climate & Ecosystems
Support Local Pollinators
SDG 15
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators to produce fruit. I will plant pollinator-friendly plants in my area to support local pollinators.
Basic Needs & Security
Try a New Vegan or Vegetarian Recipe
I will try a new vegan or vegetarian recipe and share how it turns out on the Ecochallenge feed, or with family and friends.
Health & Equity
Make Cleaning Products
SDG 3
I will make a few homemade cleaning products.
Health & Equity
Communicate Constructively
SDG 16
I will use the communication methods I read about to practice effective, compassionate, and nonviolent communication with someone I interact with regularly (i.e., my roommate, parents, co-worker, partner, classmates, or children).
Basic Needs & Security
Reduce Animal Product Consumption
SDG 2
One kilogram of beef and cheese emits 71kg and 24kg of greenhouse gasses, while 1kg of rice, grains, and legumes emits between 2-4kg. Fruits, vegetables, and nuts emit less than 1kg per 1kg. I will reduce my climate impact by enjoying 1 meatless meals and/or 1 vegan meals each day this week.
Basic Needs & Security
Volunteer in My Community
SDG 1
I will volunteer 8 hours in my community.
Economy & Communities
Choose LED Bulbs
SDG 7
I will replace 6 incandescent light bulb(s) with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.

Alex Lewis 4/03/2023 8:14 AMOn Sunday I spent several hours in Land Between the Lakes in TN/KY. It's a beautiful 171,280 expanse of national forest and wildlife preserves, nestles between Lakes Kentucky and Barkley. I ventured out with the intention of foraging for morels, but due to a recent prescribed burn near the trails I hiked, there were none in the area. There were many trees down in the area due to this weekend's tornadoes, but a few new sprouts were beginning to poke through the ashes and debris. It's always reassuring to watch mother nature persist through natural disasters and hard winters. For everyone's enjoyment, here is a particularly vibrant dogtooth violet that caught my eye along the trail. Happy spring!
