What was it like to practice mindfulness? If this is a practice for you already, what was something new you understood in practicing during Earth Month?

Mindfulness is something I am trying to inculcate in my day to day life. Either by meditating for 10mins or by making myself be aware of my surroundings and trying to let it come to me naturally with time, so that it becomes my way of living. For me, mindfulness helps me stay calm, relaxed, handle the stress and situations around me.
Practicing this during Earth Month, allowed me to understand that we should never stop practicing mindfulness even when we think we are a master of it now because any time you can fall back and it may be a little bit more difficult to hype yourself up when you are already in a difficult time. If you have continued to incorporate mindfulness daily in your life, you will start finding it easy to live with your mind.

What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time inside and on screens?

The screens when used ideally is the best form of technology that we as humans have been able to adapt. But when this becomes the part and parcel of our lifestyle, we start losing ourselves to this black hole. Half of the time, most of us are oblivious to this situation and go on living this life. The other 'lucky' group which has identified this have taken the first big step towards awareness and mindfulness. Now, we have the journey ahead where we have to keep reminding ourselves that the screens are not our life, what it tells or shows is not the ultimate reality and that there is more to us. It's a journey where you will fall back but how many times you keep getting up, is what counts!

How does practicing a work-life balance create a more sustainable life for you? How might it contribute to sustainability more broadly?

Work-life balance is one of the most vital things to own up to once we start working. When we realize that there is more to life than just working and earning money, we look at the world with new eyes, we look at people with more empathy. This itself, is the base concept of sustainability, the place where it all starts - within us.

How can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place? Was there a new place in your region that was exciting to learn about and visit?

I feel composed or I become more composed when I spend more time with nature. Hence, I make it a point to go out for a walk every day to stay grounded. I found a park today and visited it. There are people coming for jogging, walking, doing exercises and there are kids playing around with frisbee. I spent my some time there, post which I felt refreshed and felt ready for the day. A very good break from work!

Why is art an important way for you to express sustainability values?

    Simron M's avatar
    Simron M 4/02/2023 11:41 PM
Seeing art differs from person to person. If you notice, art is there everywhere, even around you right now. For me, personally I become more aware of this form when I am with nature, when I feel connected to the wind blowing around me with leaves flowing in rhythm. And since it brings me closer to this Earthly feeling, it helps me to express or understand sustainability values in a better way.

What did you watch, and what was the most important thing you learned in the documentary(ies) you watched? How does what you learned connect to your understanding of climate change and Earth Month?

I watched the documentary called 'The Elephant Whisperers.' It taught me how elephants can feel just like humans or more. If we give them love and care, they'll see us as a part of their own, sensing our emotions when we are sad or even happy. It was a beautiful documentary showing the luscious green filled areas, where elephants who have to go under a treatment are brought in. It taught me how every other thing in this planet is connected and the best way to connect with it is by showing love and kindness. Hence, it is vital to take care of the Earth and all the beings subsiding in it which just does not include only humans.
