Lisa Marriott-Smith 4/21/2023 9:30 PMWe picked up this butterfly bush in the discount bin and nursed it back to health. It’s visited by lots of pollinators, including our resident Anna’s hummingbird and this pretty swallowtail.-

REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & EcosystemsAre you more or less aware of Earth Day this year because of the Ecochallenge?
Lisa Marriott-Smith 4/20/2023 10:39 AM -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & EcosystemsWhy is art an important way for you to express sustainability values?
Lisa Marriott-Smith 4/19/2023 3:47 PMSo many of us are visual learners; sharing photos creates a deeper understanding. -
Lisa Marriott-Smith 4/18/2023 8:59 AMBest quote of the day, “It’s not policies, it’s new pickup trucks in driveways that gets buy in” stated Bret Adee, a bee keeper in the documentary The Pollinators when speaking about farmers embracing eco-friendly agriculture practices. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & EcosystemsWhat did you watch, and what was the most important thing you learned in the documentary(ies) you watched? How does what you learned connect to your understanding of climate change and Earth Month?
Lisa Marriott-Smith 4/18/2023 8:51 AMThere’s still hope to not only stop climate change, but reverse it. Now’s the time to focus on drawdown techniques, like forest tenure by indigenous peoples, and regenerative agriculture. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEconomy & CommunitiesWhat most interested or surprised you about your energy audit?
Lisa Marriott-Smith 4/16/2023 8:38 PMI took the online energy audit offered by my electricity provider. I was surprised that the majority of my energy usage was attributed to “other”. It looks like I’m going to have to perform a more in depth audit to figure out what that other stuff is. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & EquityWhy is it important to honor native and indigenous peoples and cultures? What have you learned that is important to you? If you identify with or are a member of an indigenous group, how does your community practice sustainability?
Lisa Marriott-Smith 4/16/2023 8:18 PMIndigenous peoples have been stewards of the land and practicing sustainability for a long time. We can learn a lot of good practices from these communities. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBasic Needs & SecurityWhat was the dish you made, and how did it turn out? What did it feel like to try a new recipe? If you can share a picture, please do!
Lisa Marriott-Smith 4/14/2023 6:51 PMMy whole family enjoyed this Black Bean Quinoa Enchilada Bake from Two Peas in a Pod. The adults also enjoyed white wine spritzers made with mint from the garden. 😁

Lisa Marriott-Smith 4/14/2023 6:42 PMHere’s an easy recipe for making your own non toxic windshield washer fluid.
Windshield Washer FluidYou will need:- 1 empty (clean) gallon jug
- 8 oz. isopropyl rubbing alcohol (high proof vodka can be substituted)
- 1 oz. liquid castile soap (where to buy liquid castile soap)
Pour the rubbing alcohol into the empty jug. Fill the jug with water, leaving room for the soap. Slowly add the soap to the jug. Cap the jug and gently tip upside down a few times to mix ingredients. Pour windshield wiper fluid into the correct compartment under your car hood. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBasic Needs & SecurityWhat surprised you about the two produce lists? How will you use these lists for your grocery shopping? Have you used these lists before?
Lisa Marriott-Smith 4/09/2023 7:47 PMI was surprised at the number of leafy greens on the dirty dozen list but cabbage made the clean 15 list. I wonder if the variety of cabbage makes a difference. The one pictured on the list had tightly packed leaves so is less prone to insect predation. But I prefer the leafy winter savoy, which is looser.
