REFLECTION QUESTIONEducation & LivelihoodHow does working with others to clean up your community make you feel?
Breanna McCormick 5/01/2023 12:01 AMI feel really good when I work with others to clean up the community. It's good for the environment and I can notice the positive mental health benefits of it as well. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBasic Needs & SecurityWhat did you watch, and what was the most important thing you learned in the documentaries you watched? How does what you learned connect to your understanding of climate change and Earth Month?
Breanna McCormick 4/11/2023 2:23 PMI watched Seeds of Doubt which follows environmentalist Vandana Shiva. She interviews farmers and their family members about their lack of crops growing successfully each season. Small time farmers are going bankrupt and hungry to an extent that hundreds have committed suicide because they are in debt and unable to grow anything on their land. This made me think about how the global food supply is in danger and that this must be happening in many more places that I was unaware of. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & EquityWhat did you watch, and what was the most important thing you learned in the documentaries you watched? How does what you learned connect to your understanding of climate change and Earth Month?
Breanna McCormick 4/11/2023 2:18 PMI watched a Vice YouTube documentary on girls in developing countries being unable to attend school because they spend several hours a day trekking through dangerous areas to get water for drinking and cooking. It was really sad to see how the lack of clean water nearby has so many effects on the local community. It further reinforced the idea that we must take care of our planet before things get even worse and more areas experience drought. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEconomy & CommunitiesWhat was the most interesting thing you learned from analyzing your utility bill? What are some ways you can save energy and water?
Breanna McCormick 4/10/2023 12:45 PMAfter taking a look ay my utility bills I feel that I need to use my lights less and unplug electronic devices when not needed. I should also commit to taking shorter showers long term in order to save water. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBasic Needs & SecurityWhat was one of your most memorable volunteer experiences, and why? What would you like to volunteer for next, and why?
Breanna McCormick 4/10/2023 12:44 PMOne of my most memorable volunteer experiences was with Transition Projects for the 2020 Veterans Stand Down. Covid significantly impacted it but we were able to push through and get hundreds of veterans packs filled with critical items related to hygiene, clothing, sleeping bags, public transit passes, vouchers for motels, and snacks. I have a few volunteer activities lines up for the next 2 months involving native shrub planting, seed farm harvesting, and permaculture. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & EquityWhy do you donate food? How does it connect to your values?
Breanna McCormick 4/06/2023 9:47 AMI donate food because I believe that everyone should have access to nutritious meals. I've worked in homeless services and seen how important food donations are to keep the shelters operating and keep thousands of participants fed. I think a lot of food donations end up being unhealthy which is pretty unfortunate. When I buy food to donate I try to make sure it is relatively nutritious and not full of sugar. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & EquityWhat was surprising about the ingredients in your cleaning supplies, personal care, and pet products?
Breanna McCormick 4/06/2023 9:44 AMThere are so many unnecessary and toxic ingredients in the average cleaning supplies. By making them at home you can eliminate the majority of those and stick to just a few ingredients. You can also save a lot of money this way and reduce the plastic you would be using everytime you buy a new bottle. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEducation & LivelihoodWhat did you watch, and what was the most important thing you learned in the documentaries you watched? How does what you learned connect to your understanding of climate change and Earth Month?
Breanna McCormick 4/06/2023 9:38 AMI watched The Most Dangerous Ways to Get to School - Bolivia. It was really eye opening to see how many hours some students (extremely young ones too) must trek through dangerous conditions just to get to school to receive their education. As a result of climate change many of the routes' students were taking experienced landslides and flash floods making it even more unsafe. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEconomy & CommunitiesWhat was it like to mend your clothing? If you are skilled at mending, what tips do you have for others?
Breanna McCormick 4/06/2023 9:33 AMI used to sew in middle school but haven't done much of it since. I had a flannel and a jacket that needed to be repaired. I bought a small at home sewing kit and fixed both items. I am looking at getting a sewing machine to make and repair more of my own clothes. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBasic Needs & SecurityWhat surprised you about the two produce lists? How will you use these lists for your grocery shopping? Have you used these lists before?
Breanna McCormick 4/06/2023 9:29 AMI have used the clean 15 and dirty dozen produce list before but never paid strict attention. I've started to learn the updated lists and only buy organic when it comes to the dirty dozen. I am also working on a hydroponic gardening set up at home so I can grow more of my own produce.
