I should have posted this a lot sooner, but better late than never. This is the flag I made for our team, at the request of Doug. My inspiration for this flag was the famous Earthrise photo taken by the crew of Apollo 8. Earthrise is widely considered one of the most important photos of the 20th Century Environmental Movement. It showed our planet as an island of life in a barren cosmic sea, and that really spoke to a lot of people. And I certainly hope everyone likes this flag. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEducation & LivelihoodHow does working with others to clean up your community make you feel?
Samuel McDonald 4/29/2023 9:09 AMI was part of Trashy Tuesday at the Shreveport Aquarium. It always feels good to help pick-up trash around our local area, and do good in our immediate community. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEducation & LivelihoodHow does practicing a work-life balance create a more sustainable life for you? How might it contribute to sustainability more broadly?
Samuel McDonald 4/17/2023 1:35 PMI write a lot of audio drama podcast reviews on my blog. A lot of times, I feel bad when I’m not working on new reviews. But I must remember to take time for myself and to relax. Time relaxing isn’t time wasted. It will help me focus and do better when I return to my reviewing work. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & EquityWhat did you watch, and what was the most important thing you learned in the documentaries you watched? How does what you learned connect to your understanding of climate change and Earth Month?
Samuel McDonald 4/17/2023 9:01 AMI watched some videos from the YouTube channel Wendover Productions. In the first video talked about why the Southern Hemisphere is so much pooorer than the Northern Hemisphere. The second video talked about why the news media focuses so much on negative stories, and the negative impact that can have on society. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & EcosystemsWhat did you watch, and what was the most important thing you learned in the documentary(ies) you watched? How does what you learned connect to your understanding of climate change and Earth Month?
Samuel McDonald 4/17/2023 8:18 AMI watched videos on the YouTube channels RealLifeLore, Wendover Productions, Atlas Pro, and It’s Okay to Be Smart.
From RealLifeLore, I learned about the challenges facing the Indonesian capital city of Jakarta, and how climate change is exacerbating these problems. From Atlas Pro, I learned about the concept of biogeography, and how Australia fits into it. From Wendover Productions, I learned about how carbon credits often use faulty data, that they are a bit of a scam, and how they are used by corporations as a form of greenwashing. From Its Okay to be Smart, I learned about the extinction of the Ice Age megafauna, and the importance of preserving the remaining megafauna in Africa. I also learned about the massive amount of plastic that is polluting the oceans, and what we can all do to help combat this problem. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEconomy & CommunitiesWhat did you watch, and what was the most important thing you learned in the documentaries you watched? How does what you learned connect to your understanding of climate change and Earth Month?
Samuel McDonald 4/16/2023 6:13 AMI watched a really interesting video from the YouTube channel Wendover Productions. It was about the ways in which electric cars can become economically viable to compete with gasoline cars. The biggest take away I got is that we have the technology already, but we need to build more electric car infrastructure. Specifically, we need infrastructure of fast charging stations with standard plug design. And this has already happened in Europe thanks to coordinated government action. So, what’s stopping America from doing the same? -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBasic Needs & SecurityWhat did you watch, and what was the most important thing you learned in the documentaries you watched? How does what you learned connect to your understanding of climate change and Earth Month?
Samuel McDonald 4/16/2023 6:09 AMThe YouTube channels RealLifeLore and Atlas Pro have a lot of really great videos on topics relating to the environment, food production, and climate change. On RealLifeLore, I watched a really interesting video about water management in Cape Town, South Africa. It discussed how the city came dangerously close to effector running out of water last year, and potential solutions in the future. Meanwhile, Atlas Pro made a really interesting video about the Blue Revolution. That is, about the development of deep sea aquaculture, also known as mariculture, and how it can be used to help feed our species ver growing global population. -

Samuel McDonald 4/08/2023 10:51 AMMy aunt and uncle were visiting, so I decide to show them my place of employment. I shared many fun facts about the animals who call the Shreveport Aquarium home, and about the ways we encourage conservation and good environmental habits with our guest. I had my handy reusable filtered water bottle with me, so no need for single use water bottles. They both had a good time, and enjoyed the aquarium.
