Kyle Mende 4/19/2023 6:43 AMThanks for sharing Ken! Amazing to hear you were previously an archaeologist! As for renaming of locations, venues, buildings I can't agree more. The choice should be the native and indigenous people.

Ken's actions
Health & Equity
Practice Mindfulness
SDG 3
I will spend 10 minutes each day practicing mindfulness.
Climate & Ecosystems
Support Local Pollinators
SDG 15
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators to produce fruit. I will plant pollinator-friendly plants in my area to support local pollinators.
Climate & Ecosystems
Ecological & Xeriscape Gardening
SDG 14, 15
Studies show a grass lawn is water intensive and on average it require about 30 percent of a household’s water consumption. I will do one or more of the following actions in my yard or community to conserve water and improve habitat: plant indigenous plants, landscape with water-efficient plants, add mulching, replace a lawn, and/or use eco-friendly fertilizers.
Climate & Ecosystems
Explore My Area
SDG 14, 15
Each day, I will spend 45 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).
Health & Equity
Support Indigenous & First Nations Communities
SDG 10
I will spend 60 learning about the past and present indigenous communities in my regions and what I can do to be supportive.
Economy & Communities
Choose LED Bulbs
SDG 7
I will replace 6 incandescent light bulb(s) with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.
Basic Needs & Security
Try a New Vegan or Vegetarian Recipe
I will try a new vegan or vegetarian recipe and share how it turns out on the Ecochallenge feed, or with family and friends.
Basic Needs & Security
Reduce Animal Product Consumption
SDG 2
One kilogram of beef and cheese emits 71kg and 24kg of greenhouse gasses, while 1kg of rice, grains, and legumes emits between 2-4kg. Fruits, vegetables, and nuts emit less than 1kg per 1kg. I will reduce my climate impact by enjoying 2 meatless meals and/or 1 vegan meals each day this week.
Economy & Communities
Join the Community Champion Portal event
Join the EcoChallenge event on the Community Champion Portal to track qualifying actions. Select actions are eligible for matching funds going to EcoChallenge. Link provided in the dropdown menu.
Basic Needs & Security
Calculate Your Water Footprint
SDG 6
I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste.
Health & Equity
Donate Food
SDG 3, 10
I will find out what food programs are in my area and donate food and/or other items that they request.
Basic Needs & Security
Volunteer in My Community
SDG 1
I will volunteer 4 hours in my community.
Basic Needs & Security
Watch a Documentary About Food, Water, or Basic Needs
SDG 6
I will watch 1 documentaries about food, water, or basic needs.
Basic Needs & Security
Take 5-Minute Or Less Showers
SDG 6
I will save up to 6 gallons (23 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute showers. Tip: Use a timer to practice or count to 60 a few times.
Health & Equity
Communicate Constructively
SDG 16
I will use the communication methods I read about to practice effective, compassionate, and nonviolent communication with someone I interact with regularly (i.e., my roommate, parents, co-worker, partner, classmates, or children).
Climate & Ecosystems
Plant a Tree
SDG 15
On average, a tree absorbs 10 kilograms (22 pounds) of carbon dioxide yearly during the first 20 years. To do my part, I will plant 10 trees in my community, public parks, or backyard.
Climate & Ecosystems
Watch a Documentary About Climate Change or Nature
SDG 13, 14, 15
I will watch 3 documentaries about climate change.
Economy & Communities
Complete the Greener Apron Course and log hours in the Benevity Virtual event
This goal will allow us to learn more about sustainability, and also donate trees to the Arbor Day Foundation.
Education & Livelihood
Host or Join a Cleanup Event

REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & EquityWhy is it important to honor native and indigenous peoples and cultures? What have you learned that is important to you? If you identify with or are a member of an indigenous group, how does your community practice sustainability?
Ken Mcdonough 4/18/2023 8:12 PMI grew up in the Northeast, and what we considered honorable recognition of native and indigenous peoples is everywhere. Grew up on Lake Ronkonkoma, sister lives in Massapequa even now, and our VERY large school district is named Sachem (Merrimac and Seneca for me - go flaming arrows!). I was also an archaeologist in the area for several years before moving away, and have worked on many colonial and pre-colonial sites. Anyway, I think it is important to revisit some of our assumptions - and that's what I did this week. NYS recently passed a law which moves to remove all references that are familiar to me. Rename the district, schools, sports teams, etc. Easy decision in many cases (i.e. redmen), to me not as easy in others (Sachem), but ultimately I think the most important voice MUST be native and indigenous people and regardless of what the intent of some of these names is - it's their decision to make and we should honor that. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBasic Needs & SecurityWhat was the tastiest meatless or vegan meal you ever had or had recently? Did you make it? Can you share a recipe?
Ken Mcdonough 4/13/2023 1:10 PMwe have meatless lasagna, and more recently my wife up-leveled that to use thin sliced zucchini instead of noodles. pretty tasty! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & EcosystemsHow can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place? Was there a new place in your region that was exciting to learn about and visit?
Ken Mcdonough 4/13/2023 1:08 PMTaking the kids (11/3) out for a walk almost every day is critical for exercise, family time, and appreciation of the outdoors. They also like to go to different places! We've recently discovered a guided Marsh experience nearby, and that didn't compare to a culvert where there are always egrets nearby.-
Kyle Mende 4/19/2023 6:45 AMI love taking my kids out. We go daily on walks, and we have such an abundant bird population here in South Texas we've turned each of our kids (17,13,7) into avid bird watchers. Growing up I never thought I would enjoy identifying birds like I do now with my wife. It's amazing just exploring the area your in, and it truly creates great connective moments between your family and yourself.

Ken Mcdonough 4/11/2023 8:22 PMThe family and I tore out about 200 sqft of monoculture grass, along with some invasive decorative shrubbery, and planted 12 different local species (so far) of flowering plants and trees.
