Deborah's actions
Climate & Ecosystems
Plant a Tree
SDG 15
On average, a tree absorbs 10 kilograms (22 pounds) of carbon dioxide yearly during the first 20 years. To do my part, I will plant 3 trees in my community, public parks, or backyard.
Basic Needs & Security
Volunteer in My Community
SDG 1
I will volunteer 10 hours in my community.
Basic Needs & Security
Try a New Vegan or Vegetarian Recipe
I will try a new vegan or vegetarian recipe and share how it turns out on the Ecochallenge feed, or with family and friends.
Economy & Communities
Analyze Your Utility Bills
SDG 7
I spend 10 minutes analyzing my recent utility bills, which might include electricity, gas, or water to see what my current usage is and determine if I can reduce my energy and water use.
Education & Livelihood
Host or Join a Cleanup Event
SDG 11, 17
Within my community at home or work, I will organize or attend a local cleanup event.
Education & Livelihood
Share Your Eco Habits
SDG 11
Through my Earth Month Ecochallenge feed, I will share with others an environmentally friendly habit I have cultivated.
Education & Livelihood
Plan A Staycation in Your Community
SDG 11
For an upcoming vacation, I will spend 30 minutes planning out a staycation in my region. For reference, one several hour flight releases the equivalent of nearly 14% of the annual emissions from a car.
Basic Needs & Security
Know Your Produce
SDG 2
I will become a savvy produce shopper when buying organic and non-organic items.
Climate & Ecosystems
Support Local Pollinators
SDG 15
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators to produce fruit. I will plant pollinator-friendly plants in my area to support local pollinators.
Health & Equity
Make Cleaning Products
SDG 3
I will make a few homemade cleaning products.
Climate & Ecosystems
Calculate Your Carbon Impact
SDG 13
I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.
Health & Equity
Donate Food
SDG 3, 10
I will find out what food programs are in my area and donate food and/or other items that they request.
Health & Equity
Spend Time Outside
SDG 3
I will replace 20 minute(s) per day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside exercising, enjoying the sunrise/sunset, gardening, journaling, or practicing gratitude for nature.
Health & Equity
Communicate Constructively
SDG 16
I will use the communication methods I read about to practice effective, compassionate, and nonviolent communication with someone I interact with regularly (i.e., my roommate, parents, co-worker, partner, classmates, or children).
Health & Equity
Track My Purchases
SDG 10
Each day, I will track my purchases to identify my spending habits. This will allow me to see what purchases can be reduced.
Climate & Ecosystems
Watch a Documentary About Climate Change or Nature
SDG 13, 14, 15
I will watch 1 documentaries about climate change.
Climate & Ecosystems
Ecological & Xeriscape Gardening
SDG 14, 15
Studies show a grass lawn is water intensive and on average it require about 30 percent of a household’s water consumption. I will do one or more of the following actions in my yard or community to conserve water and improve habitat: plant indigenous plants, landscape with water-efficient plants, add mulching, replace a lawn, and/or use eco-friendly fertilizers.
Health & Equity
Practice Mindfulness
SDG 3
I will spend 7 minutes each day practicing mindfulness.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?
-
Deborah McGloine 4/30/2023 9:06 AMRather than using expensive skin care products with chemicals, I supplement my routine with olive oil, coconut oil, green tea and apple cider vinegar. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & EquityWhat is easy for you to do when having a constructive conversation and what is challenging? What tips do you have for having a constructive conversation?
Deborah McGloine 4/30/2023 6:53 AMI do not have a great filter - I say what I am thinking. This challenge has been a very good one - I have learned to listen more and to rethink the ways I communicate with my 17 year old daughter. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & EcosystemsHow is planting trees good for your mental, physical, and spiritual health?
Deborah McGloine 4/30/2023 6:52 AMRather than birthday presents, our son asks us to plant trees - it is a wonderful way to honor him & our planet :) -
Deborah McGloine 4/30/2023 6:47 AMThank you, Holly, for leading the team! This has been a great experience and I have learned a great deal! I look forward to meeting you in person. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEducation & LivelihoodWhat place in your region are you most excited to visit during your staycation?
Deborah McGloine 4/30/2023 6:02 AMMy daughter and I recently toured colleges in New England and thoroughly enjoyed staying in Burlington, VT and Plymouth, NH. Side note - I chose hotels that were more environmentally friendly than their counterparts :) -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & EquityWhat was surprising about the ingredients in your cleaning supplies, personal care, and pet products?
Deborah McGloine 4/30/2023 5:53 AMI have been making my own cleaning products for years. In fact, after squeeze lemon or peel oranges - I use the rinds as a scrubby. I was, however, surprised to learn about all the harmful chemicals in pet products. -

REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & EcosystemsWhy is it important to take care of pollinators? Do you have a favorite pollinator?
Deborah McGloine 4/30/2023 5:47 AMIt is vital we take care of our pollinators if we want to eat! I love them all but plant flowers to attract hummingbirds, bees and butterflies. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & EcosystemsWhat ecological or xeriscape landscaping practices do you have? How has your landscape changed from these practices?
Deborah McGloine 4/27/2023 2:20 PMI am participating in No Mow May - which No Mow May is a campaign to encourage people not to mow their lawns in the month of May – and to mow less during the summer. The reason? To help wildflowers and pollinating insects when both are in sharp decline.
Additionally, I am using no till gardening techniques for plants and vegetables.
Low and No-Till Gardening | Extension (unh.edu) -
Deborah McGloine 4/27/2023 11:40 AMMuch to my husband's chagrin, we participate in "No Mow May". It is a campaign to encourage people not to mow their lawns in the month of May – and to mow less during the summer. The reason? To help wildflowers and pollinating insects when both are in sharp decline.
