DAILY ACTIONS

Action Track: Community

Borrow Before I Buy

Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Share My "Why"

I will record a video to share why I am taking action this Earth Month, a sustainable swap I've made, and/or a local conservation effort in my area.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Join a Cleanup Effort

I will organize or participate in a trash pickup at a local river, beach, or natural body of water.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Understand My Water Footprint

Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Sustainability Lunch and Learn

Learning in a social setting can inspire connection and change. I will work with a friend or colleague to plan and host a lunch and learn at work, school, in my neighborhood or other location to learn more about an environmental topic important to me. After the lunch and learn, I will share more about it on the feed.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Plant Trees

Trees capture carbon and produce oxygen that is essential to life on earth. I will support this important piece of nature by organizing or joining a community group to plant 1 native trees in my community, public parks, office location, campus or backyard.

UNCOMPLETED

Action Track: Community

Volunteer in my Community

I will volunteer 8 hours in my community.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Calculate My Carbon Impact

Carbon emissions can show up in many surprising ways in our life. I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Choose Renewable Energy

Renewable energy options are becoming more widespread and accessible. Not only are they good for the planet, they can help save money as well. I will sign up for my utility company's clean/renewable energy option. If my utility does not offer one, I will contact them to advocate for this option in the future.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Choose Eco-Friendly Wood and Paper

Trees provide food and habitat for local wildlife species, shade our streets and homes, and help keep our air and water clean by capturing pollutants. Buying products that help protect forests makes a difference. I will only purchase wood, furniture, and paper products from ecologically certified sources such as Forest Stewardship Council.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Raise Awareness for the Conservation of Freshwater and Oceans

I will spend 60 minutes learning more about the importance of freshwater + ocean conservation, and how I can reduce my water use. I will share what I learn with people in person, on social media, and on the feed.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Low Water Gardening

Grass lawns are water-intensive and on average require about 30 percent of a household’s water consumption. Native plants are water-efficient and help maintain the balance and diversity of local ecosystems. I will plant native species with water-efficient plants to conserve water and improve the habitat, then post a photo on the feed to share.

UNCOMPLETED

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Education & Livelihood
How do you create new sustainability-related habits or change bad habits?

    Gerardo Muñoz's avatar
    Gerardo Muñoz 4/30/2023 3:55 AM
Reflection question as this ecochallenge month is ending.

Developing a new habit is not easy. It helps if you are not doing it alone: ecochallenge is an example, where we all made a committment as a group and we have that pressure from the group to do our part. But I think that the most important thing it to realize that the process of developing a habit is not perfect. There will be some bumps along the way, but you must not be discouraged if you have some hiccups in the journey.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Education & Livelihood
How does practicing a work-life balance create a more sustainable life for you? How might it contribute to sustainability more broadly?

    Gerardo Muñoz's avatar

As the last working week of earth month just ended, this work-lufe balance reflection seems adequate.

By scheduling lunch breaks and a daily 30 min pause at work, I was less stressed and felt like more focused to get things done. These breaka also helped to strengthen interactions with colleagues and make friends. I had become very reclusive during the pandemic, so these pauses took me out of that unhealthy situation that had become my confort zone. Improving my work-life balance and allowing me to take breaks has made me happier and making me enjoy coming more days to the office.

AspenTech still faces challenges in terms of supporting work / life balance.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health & Equity
What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time inside and on screens?

    Gerardo Muñoz's avatar
    Gerardo Muñoz 4/29/2023 5:09 AM
Reflection question: spending most of the time inside and on screens is not good for mental and physical health. This does not mean that we need to run marathons and go hiking every other day, but just move our limbs and enjoythe outdoors will have significant health benefits. In the longer (and macro) term, a healthy society will also put less pressure in local & national health systems, leaving room for more economic growth.

Outdoor time is crucial to long term healthiness. At the same time, there is much to do in work places and public buildings as far as indoor air pollution goes.

Back in my hometown, they started implementing a program where households were required to separate their trash and their recyclables (paper, glass, plastic, etc.). The program never work as the collection trucks were not conditioned for this and they blended everything together. So people stopped doing it. My parents still classify their recyclables and thake them to a special collection facility once every 3 or 4 months (you don't want to do unnnecessary drives either)
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Basic Needs & Security
What was the tastiest meatless or vegan meal you ever had or had recently? Did you make it? Can you share a recipe?

    Gerardo Muñoz's avatar
    Gerardo Muñoz 4/29/2023 4:50 AM
Reflection question (vegan meals) The tastiest vegan meal I tried recently was actually made with leftovers... I had mexican rice (with tomato sauce, carrots and peas), steamed hominy with green chillies and salsa macha (sauce with dried chillies, sesame seeds, peanuts and pumpkin seeds). I mixed all together and created a new fantastic meal with leftovers!

I like to walk and try to avoid driving when possible. For example, today I went to Boston, parked my car on a garage and walked all over the city. I walked over 18 km (11 mi)

I separate plastic film, bubble wrap and shipping pillows since they cannot be recycled with the rest of the plastic. Since I don't generate a lot of waste, I don't have much, but eventually I will take this to a collection place (see article below)... If anyone in Mass has done this and would like to validate the existance of any collection place for this (I haven't checked myself) please share!!! Thanks

Hi Gerardo, of course the basic question is checking that the central collection point actually leads to a concrete recycling activity .... at my town (Acton) there are periodic (quarterly or half yearly) recycling collections for different types of hard-to-recycle plastics.

After college, I donated most of my books to public libraries and public universities, hoping they be used by someone else. One of the books I kept was on environmental sustainability (lookig at note in the cover, it's ironic it found its way to the US)

I try to buy less single-use plastics. As an example, I buy detergent in bulk and use existing containers that I refill

I'm trying to do the same. It's funny, at least for me, I think I'm doing well and then someone tells me of a great way to eliminate single-use plastics which I've never heard of. It just goes to show that having conversations on these topics is important as you never how you may be positively impacting someone.

Over the winter I took two pairs of shoes and a pair of boots to repair. It might be easiest and cheapest to do it in Mexico, but it is a way to extend the use life of things. I was about to throw a pair of loafers away and now they pretty much look like new!
