Terry's actions
Basic Needs & Security
Calculate Your Water Footprint
SDG 6
I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste.
Climate & Ecosystems
Calculate Your Carbon Impact
SDG 13
I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.
Basic Needs & Security
Reduce Animal Product Consumption
SDG 2
One kilogram of beef and cheese emits 71kg and 24kg of greenhouse gasses, while 1kg of rice, grains, and legumes emits between 2-4kg. Fruits, vegetables, and nuts emit less than 1kg per 1kg. I will reduce my climate impact by enjoying 1 meatless meals and/or 1 vegan meals each day this week.
Climate & Ecosystems
Choose Sustainable Seafood Options
SDG 14
Using Seafood Watch's list, I will enjoy 1 sustainable seafood meals each day.
Economy & Communities
Online Energy Audit
SDG 7
I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy.
Economy & Communities
Carry My Trash
SDG 12
I will carry all of my unrecyclable, non-compostable trash with me each day to raise my awareness of how much waste I produce.

Terry Murphy 4/19/2023 7:08 AMBusy month, which in some ways makes this easier. I have to keep it simple. Cooking vegan soups ahead of time, having salad stuff prepped makes for quick dinners. -
Terry Murphy 4/13/2023 7:03 AMAlthough this was not on my list, I am putting it there. I live in a small town (Belmont) next to a large city (Boston) and a progressive city (Cambridge). Belmont has started cutting down mature trees. A lot of them. Three on my street yesterday. Before my street got hit, I attended the "Shade Tree Committee" meeting to inquire about the trees on other streets that i saw coming down. ... But the group never addressed this, only to spend time talking about the 300 trees they will be planting ... "sometime". A neighbor (who bought his house last year because he loved the trees) and I are going to sound the alarm on this. It is insane. There are a few trees that should be cut down ... one has been dead for a year and the other one is so hollowed out I can punch a hole in it. But no, we're talking trees that have about 50 years worth of growth. So, yes, I am angry and I am going to put on my activist hat. -
Terry Murphy 4/10/2023 1:04 PMToday I bit the bullet and realized that we would be eating seafood and meat in the coming months ... or at least I would be cooking it. So I put in an order with our local farm (small, family-owned) and paid premium prices for local seafood and meat. I realize this is not the answer to solving climate change nor supporting animal rights, but I also know what the household expectations are so I work to make the best of it. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBasic Needs & SecurityWhat was the tastiest meatless or vegan meal you ever had or had recently? Did you make it? Can you share a recipe?
Terry Murphy 4/10/2023 12:59 PMVietnamese spring rolls from Porter Square Bookstore in Cambridge, Mass. It is one of my favorites. Other than that, my day started with vegan blueberry pancakes and veggie bacon. -
Terry Murphy 4/10/2023 12:58 PMMy biggest problem is remembering. I did take my garbage with me and I did have my own bags etc., but it takes this challenge for me to remember my goal. What happens in May? -
Terry Murphy 4/10/2023 12:55 PMLast summer we were under drought warnings. I found myself taking my gray water and watering the plants. I decided to work under the same premise, regardless of conditions. -
Terry Murphy 4/07/2023 6:24 AMRealized I have trained myself to take brief showers ... even when I have the luxury of super hot water in the gym shower and it feels great on tired muscles. A bell goes off in my head and I stop the pleasure. Walking OUT of the gym gets me even higher than a hot shower, so I aim for that instead. -
Terry Murphy 4/07/2023 6:21 AMDon't believe people when they tell you the little things don't matter .. that only 9 percent of our plastic gets recycled. So reduce your plastic use by 10 percent, 50 percent, whatever and your attacking the problem from a different angle. Weakening their argument .. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & EcosystemsWhat is one way you will reduce your carbon footprint? What is a practice you already have that helps you reduce your carbon footprint?
Terry Murphy 4/07/2023 6:19 AMI don't own a car and I use public transportation or I walk. In New England, that can sometimes be difficult, but it's apparently doable since I've been "doing it" for 25 years. (Ever since I saw a 95-year-old woman wearing high heels getting onto the Greenline above ground subway without missing a beat - big step up to get onto the train. I told myself, I can do this forever .... I wear Doc Martens!) -
Terry Murphy 4/05/2023 7:19 AMI started planning meals again to avoid waste and buy what I need. I also joined Misfits ... which is worth checking out. Boston also has a Too Good To Go app that alerts you when local restaurants, bakeries etc., have excess food at a discount cost. Example: For less than $5 at Iggy's Bakery (one of the finest suppliers of bread/baked goods in the area), we got six multiseed bagels, a large baguette and a large loaf of focaccia bread. We shared it with a neighbor. You can refine your search and while you don't know what you'll be getting for your $5, you can guess based on the source. This food would not have gone to a food bank, but instead ended up as compost or basic food waste.
