REFLECTION QUESTIONEconomy & CommunitiesWhat was the most interesting thing you learned from analyzing your utility bill? What are some ways you can save energy and water?
Colette Nordyke 4/27/2023 8:04 AMI recently analyzed our water utility bills for our home consumption and realized there is a cost savings if I limit my water usage between the hour of 4:00 - 7:00pm. We now hold off on doing laundry, running the dishwasher, etc. during these hours. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & EcosystemsWhat ecological or xeriscape landscaping practices do you have? How has your landscape changed from these practices?
Colette Nordyke 4/27/2023 8:01 AMWe recently added mulch to some areas of our yard, as we do each Spring. I wasn't aware it was beneficial to the environment to prevent water loss. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBasic Needs & SecurityWhat did you watch, and what was the most important thing you learned in the documentaries you watched? How does what you learned connect to your understanding of climate change and Earth Month?
Colette Nordyke 4/27/2023 7:55 AMI watched a documentary about the Amazon Rainforest and learned how many species are at risk with the current deforestation underway. I was unaware over one thousand plants and animals are being harmed. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & EquityWhat are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time inside and on screens?
Colette Nordyke 4/27/2023 7:52 AMI learned that just a few minutes outside each day allows me to refresh & reset my mind. It changes my perspective. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & EquityWhy do you donate food? How does it connect to your values?
Colette Nordyke 4/26/2023 12:07 PMDonating food feels so direct to me, as you see the good you are providing knowing someone in need will consume the products locally and in the near future to help nourish them. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & EcosystemsWhat did you watch, and what was the most important thing you learned in the documentary(ies) you watched? How does what you learned connect to your understanding of climate change and Earth Month?
Colette Nordyke 4/19/2023 12:22 PMI watched a documentary titled "Takeout" about the Amazon Rainforest and how it's deforrestation/deterioration is unfortunately negatively impacting one million species or animals and plants. I learned how this seemingly distant area has a profound effect on my environment. Simple daily choices I make can help the dire situation. -
Colette Nordyke 4/19/2023 12:18 PMSo far so good on my progress in the EcoChallenge. The reminders keep me on track. The activities don't distract me too much from my day. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEducation & LivelihoodWhat did you watch, and what was the most important thing you learned in the documentaries you watched? How does what you learned connect to your understanding of climate change and Earth Month?
Colette Nordyke 4/17/2023 2:00 PMI watched "Takeout" a documentary that discusses the Amazon Rainforest importance as the "lungs of the world". The deforestation of that region has an enormous impact on our future as it is home to one million species of plants and animals. I was not aware of the direct connection that the Amazon region has to our future, nor was I aware of the impact of my food choices that could save the earth. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBasic Needs & SecurityWhat was one of your most memorable volunteer experiences, and why? What would you like to volunteer for next, and why?
Colette Nordyke 4/12/2023 5:27 AMI helped to assemble grocery bags with affixed postcards that will be placed in our entire community's home mailboxes requesting bags to be filled with food canned/boxed goods for disadvantaged communities. It felt good to be part of a 'supply chain' to re-purpose food where it's needed the most at a food pantry. A quick, simple, inexpensive action can make a difference. -
Colette Nordyke 4/12/2023 5:18 AMThe EcoChallenge reminders are keeping me on track to put sustainability as a regular topic on my daily agenda.
