Ron Beck 4/29/2023 3:54 AMInteresting Tyler! I wrote my senior thesis on the plants in the Alpine zone of Mt Washington. To do that i did a lot of fieldwork on the Mountain in winter! (also, in high school, was an active member of the Green Mtn Club (vermont) - it's a similar organization although not as well funded. Among other things, I and a handful of other people constructed one of the shelters on the Long Trail Vt. It is very rewarding to take part in that kind of activity, that, as you said, helps people enjoy nature but minimize impact.)

I will use the communication methods I read about to practice effective, compassionate, and nonviolent communication with someone I interact with regularly (i.e., my roommate, parents, co-worker, partner, classmates, or children).
Health & Equity
Practice Mindfulness
SDG 3
I will spend 5 minutes each day practicing mindfulness.
Basic Needs & Security
Watch a Documentary About Food, Water, or Basic Needs
SDG 6
I will watch 1 documentaries about food, water, or basic needs.
Climate & Ecosystems
Watch a Documentary About Climate Change or Nature
SDG 13, 14, 15
I will watch 1 documentaries about climate change.
Basic Needs & Security
Try a New Vegan or Vegetarian Recipe
I will try a new vegan or vegetarian recipe and share how it turns out on the Ecochallenge feed, or with family and friends.
Economy & Communities
Chat With A Nonprofit
SDG 12
I will have a conversation with one or more nonprofit organizations I want to be involved with.
Health & Equity
Spend Time Outside
SDG 3
I will replace 20 minute(s) per day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside exercising, enjoying the sunrise/sunset, gardening, journaling, or practicing gratitude for nature.
Action Track: Community
Volunteer in my Community
I will volunteer 8 hours in my community.
Land + Forests
Zero Waste Day
The impacts of our waste are far reaching. I will create zero waste for an entire day and share my reflections and learnings on the feed.
Action Track: Community
Sustainability Lunch and Learn
Learning in a social setting can inspire connection and change. I will work with a friend or colleague to plan and host a lunch and learn at work, school, in my neighborhood or other location to learn more about an environmental topic important to me. After the lunch and learn, I will share more about it on the feed.
Freshwater + Oceans
Low Water Gardening
Grass lawns are water-intensive and on average require about 30 percent of a household’s water consumption. Native plants are water-efficient and help maintain the balance and diversity of local ecosystems. I will plant native species with water-efficient plants to conserve water and improve the habitat, then post a photo on the feed to share.
Freshwater + Oceans
Understand My Water Footprint
Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.
Land + Forests
Choose Eco-Friendly Wood and Paper
Trees provide food and habitat for local wildlife species, shade our streets and homes, and help keep our air and water clean by capturing pollutants. Buying products that help protect forests makes a difference. I will only purchase wood, furniture, and paper products from ecologically certified sources such as Forest Stewardship Council.
Freshwater + Oceans
Raise Awareness for the Conservation of Freshwater and Oceans
I will spend 60 minutes learning more about the importance of freshwater + ocean conservation, and how I can reduce my water use. I will share what I learn with people in person, on social media, and on the feed.
Climate + Air
Calculate My Carbon Impact
Carbon emissions can show up in many surprising ways in our life. I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.
Action Track: Community
Share My "Why"
I will record a video to share why I am taking action this Earth Month, a sustainable swap I've made, and/or a local conservation effort in my area.
Action Track: Community
Join a Cleanup Effort
I will organize or participate in a trash pickup at a local river, beach, or natural body of water.
Freshwater + Oceans
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
It's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 3 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Action Track: Community
Borrow Before I Buy
Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.
Action Track: Community
Plant Trees
Trees capture carbon and produce oxygen that is essential to life on earth. I will support this important piece of nature by organizing or joining a community group to plant 1 native trees in my community, public parks, office location, campus or backyard.
Climate + Air
Online Energy Audit
Energy use and waste is often invisible. I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy.

REFLECTION QUESTIONEconomy & CommunitiesWhat was one nonprofit organization that was exciting to learn about?
Tyler Penkofski 4/28/2023 6:07 AMThe AMC (Appalachian Mountain Club) maintains much of the trail networks in the White Mountains, and learning about the extent and effort they put in to limit their impact on the environment was humbling. Also learning about the type of data that they collect regarding the unique Alpine zone and how it's used to create awareness about the environment was quite enjoyable. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBasic Needs & SecurityWhat did you watch, and what was the most important thing you learned in the documentaries you watched? How does what you learned connect to your understanding of climate change and Earth Month?
Tyler Penkofski 4/25/2023 5:50 AMThe documentary I watched focused on water conservation and how water may become a scarce resource in some regions given the current consumption rates. I learned that doing small things like taking shorter showers and being mindful of when you run your dishwasher are small steps that can be done at an individual level. What surprised me was that being conscious of the packaging your products come in can also help reduce overall water use.-
Gerardo Muñoz 4/25/2023 3:46 PMRon and I were just talking about water use today. We were saying that a reusable bag requires a lot of water to manufacture and that you would have to use one over 100 times to be better than paper/plastic

REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & EquityWhat is easy for you to do when having a constructive conversation and what is challenging? What tips do you have for having a constructive conversation?
Tyler Penkofski 4/21/2023 5:49 AMConstructive conversations help build stronger relationships - keeping this in mind helps highlight the importance of effective communication. I found the book "I Hear You" by Michael Sorensen around using many forms of validation during conversations to improve ones listening skills, and ultimately the outcomes of your conversations. Like most things, consistency is the hardest part and actively listening can tiresome. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBasic Needs & SecurityWhat was the dish you made, and how did it turn out? What did it feel like to try a new recipe? If you can share a picture, please do!
Tyler Penkofski 4/17/2023 5:34 AMIn lieu of turkey sandwiches for lunch, I opted to try out a new simple Quinoa bowl recipe that contains Quinoa, chick peas, black beans, cucumber, carrots and topped with a raspberry vinaigrette. It was great ! And with summer around the corner this dish is light and easy to meal prep.-

REFLECTION QUESTIONBasic Needs & SecurityWhat surprised you about the two produce lists? How will you use these lists for your grocery shopping? Have you used these lists before?
Tyler Penkofski 4/03/2023 5:58 AMI learned that purchasing frozen fruit & veg can cut down of food waste, which is a great way to save some extra $$ and reduce what I throw away. I'll be purchasing some of my veg & fruit frozen moving forward!-
Gerardo Muñoz 4/14/2023 5:04 PMThis is very intersting Tyler. I try to avoid frozen food, but you make a really good point. It looks like a good way to preven food going to waste

REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & EquityWhat are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time inside and on screens?
Tyler Penkofski 4/03/2023 5:29 AMFor me it's all about sleep - getting ~10 min of sunlight early in the morning helps your circadian rhythm and can improve your sleep. Including a morning walk w. my dog to replace my 'social catchup' time block in the morning has made this goal an easy one to complete. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & EcosystemsHow can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place? Was there a new place in your region that was exciting to learn about and visit?
Tyler Penkofski 4/03/2023 5:25 AMDiscovering new local outdoor locations not only improves my knowledge of the area so when friends visit I have a list of places to go, but it also puts you into a sense of community when using these places.
