Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Climate & Ecosystems
What is one way you will reduce your carbon footprint? What is a practice you already have that helps you reduce your carbon footprint?

    Julianne Powers's avatar
    Julianne Powers 4/28/2023 12:44 PM
The carbon footprint quiz was eye opening. I thought I was going to have a lower score given the efficiencies I've implemented around my house, but considering what you purchase at the grocery store and in regular stores as having a carbon impact it really makes you stop and reconsider the necessity of an item versus an alternative.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Education & Livelihood
How does working with others to clean up your community make you feel?

    Julianne Powers's avatar
    Julianne Powers 4/28/2023 12:42 PM
I joined my neighborhood for a community cleanup and you could see such a major difference in the look and feel. Honestly, it lifted my spirits walking around for the next few days. I feel like seeing trash has a negative impact on your mood, consciously or subconsciously, and cleaning up is so easy to do.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health & Equity
What was surprising about the ingredients in your cleaning supplies, personal care, and pet products?

    Julianne Powers's avatar
    Julianne Powers 4/28/2023 12:39 PM
This was so eye - opening. It truly sent me down a rabbit hole regarding the pet products. Who would have thought dog toys, clearly identified for dogs, would have led in them?? Tennis balls for dogs have led and those advertised for people, could have fiberglass in them, which would be hazardous to dogs and their teeth. This absolutely blew my mind.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health & Equity
What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time inside and on screens?

    Julianne Powers's avatar
    Julianne Powers 4/28/2023 12:37 PM
Sitting in front of a screen puts you in a mindless state. I would much prefer to get outside and play a round of disc golf with friends or take my pups on a hike.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Basic Needs & Security
What was the tastiest meatless or vegan meal you ever had or had recently? Did you make it? Can you share a recipe?

    Julianne Powers's avatar
    Julianne Powers 4/28/2023 12:36 PM
This wasn't terribly difficult removing meat from at least one meal per day. I struggled with the vegan meals. I would try making a recipe and I just am either a terrible cook or really can't handle vegan cheese. I will keep trying though.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Climate & Ecosystems
What was your experience like plogging, or engaging in another way to collect litter while being outside? Was there any item you collected that was unusual that you found?

    Julianne Powers's avatar
    Julianne Powers 4/28/2023 12:35 PM
I decided to go walk around looking for trash even in a downpour. I'm finding that after it rains, the trash is being pushed out of my reach so if I can pick it up sooner or even during the storm, I can avoid it piling up where I can't safely remove it.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health & Equity
What was it like to practice mindfulness? If this is a practice for you already, what was something new you understood in practicing during Earth Month?

    Julianne Powers's avatar
    Julianne Powers 4/28/2023 12:33 PM
Mindfulness was a great practice for me this month. It's something I haven't really focused on before and this forced me to try to spend some time daily focusing on mindfulness
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Climate & Ecosystems
How can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place? Was there a new place in your region that was exciting to learn about and visit?

    Julianne Powers's avatar
    Julianne Powers 4/28/2023 12:31 PM
I spent this beautiful sunny day at Longwood Gardens. I have a membership and it's only a 30 minute drive so it's nice to make the trek and see the beautiful botanical gardens revamped by the season. Right now the tulips are in their prime.

I am thoroughly enjoying entering my time outside into the system. Seeing the numbers increase each day gives me that little pep to keep going. I'm exploring new areas and playing new disc golf courses every weekend. It's something I've been eager to try and this was just the push I needed!

This has been a great learning opportunity for me. The mindfulness challenge has really made me stop and consider things more throughout the day.
