Spend Time Outside
SDG 3
I will replace 20 minute(s) per day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside exercising, enjoying the sunrise/sunset, gardening, journaling, or practicing gratitude for nature.
Climate & Ecosystems
Explore My Area
SDG 14, 15
Each day, I will spend 20 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).
Basic Needs & Security
Take 5-Minute Or Less Showers
SDG 6
I will save up to 6 gallons (23 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute showers. Tip: Use a timer to practice or count to 60 a few times.
Education & Livelihood
Stay on the Ground
SDG 11
Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally). As an example, a plane from New York to Los Angeles (~2,450 miles) generates about 65 tons of carbon dioxide.
Basic Needs & Security
Make Zero-Waste Meals
SDG 2
I will cook 1 meals with zero waste each day.
Economy & Communities
Replace Manual Thermostats
SDG 7, 9, 12
I will replace manual thermostats with smart ones.
Economy & Communities
Choose LED Bulbs
SDG 7
I will replace 10 incandescent light bulb(s) with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.
Health & Equity
Practice Mindfulness

Attend the “Discover the World of Bees” Workshop at JAC
Did you know that JAC has our own bee hives on the roof? Alveole, the group who manages our bee hives, will present this workshop. Bees are behind a third of all the food we eat, including fruit, veggies, chocolate, nuts, and coffee. In this immersive workshop, you’ll learn more about urban beekeeping and the microcosm that is the hive. We’ll follow a bee’s life’s journey from when she first emerges from her cell to her final flight. When: Thursday April 20 from 1-2pm Where: AME-119 Space is limited. Please register by Tuesday April 18

Education & Livelihood
Plan A Staycation in Your Community
SDG 11

Climate & Ecosystems
Plant a Tree
SDG 15
On average, a tree absorbs 10 kilograms (22 pounds) of carbon dioxide yearly during the first 20 years. To do my part, I will plant 1 trees in my community, public parks, or backyard.
Climate & Ecosystems
Calculate Your Carbon Impact
SDG 13
I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.
Health & Equity
Make Cleaning Products

REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & EcosystemsHow is planting trees good for your mental, physical, and spiritual health?
SUNIL RAMGULAM 4/30/2023 5:26 AMTree planting is a concept that runs throug the JAC community, from the trees that line memorial field in memory of those lost at war to the gift students gets at convocation to mark their development and growth. Trees are often reminders of loved ones that last for generations to come. Providing shelter from rain and sun, giving beautiful colours in the fall. Some giving up wonderful syrup in the springs, trees are good all around. -
SUNIL RAMGULAM 4/29/2023 2:29 PMOn this second to last day a lovely walk around Sept Iles, sorry no phone to take pictures, it was disconnect time. Hopefully those of you that participated this year have found at least 1 thing that they could continue to do year round!-

REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & EcosystemsWhat is one way you will reduce your carbon footprint? What is a practice you already have that helps you reduce your carbon footprint?
SUNIL RAMGULAM 4/28/2023 7:23 PMOne of the things we have ad our girls do is bring all their compostable items from their lunches back home as their school does not offering composting but we have it at home. No ziplocks bags allowed in the house, reuseable grocery and fruit mesh bags.-
Mary Hanks 4/28/2023 7:25 PMThis is doubly great because in addition to benefiting the environment directly, this results in young people learning planet-friendly habits!

SUNIL RAMGULAM 4/28/2023 7:19 PMFlew to Sept Iles today, could not drive. Had to compensate, ate vegan all day, reduced my water consumption, didn't use my phone on the flight, spent the time reflecting on the this project I'm involved in. Again thank for my two wives...not what you think...work wife and team member of Sunana helped me carpool again, actual wife for lettting me be away from home for another weekend!-

REFLECTION QUESTIONEducation & LivelihoodWhat place in your region are you most excited to visit during your staycation?
SUNIL RAMGULAM 4/27/2023 10:40 AMSo for my BDAy I got a family pass to the Biodome/Biosphere/planetarium/botanical gardens/insectarium
took me a good hour to go over all the places and options and map out the multiple visits. Bonus all accessible by public transport! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & EquityWhy do you donate food? How does it connect to your values?
SUNIL RAMGULAM 4/26/2023 12:26 PMThis is an easy way to give back. With 2 kids in elementary school they have a monthly donation day "giving Thursday" that works with a local food bank. At the college we also have the JAC pantry that provides support for students in need. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEconomy & CommunitiesWhat was it like to mend your clothing? If you are skilled at mending, what tips do you have for others?
SUNIL RAMGULAM 4/25/2023 10:21 AMAfter the weekend clean up we found a number of items that needed mending. I'm good at doing socks, the knees that need patches or little holes I leave to the profressional (my wife). She actually made me a 3-in-1 winter jacket one year! -

Spent some good time outside ahead of the rainy Sunday. Hosted a bday party Sunday and had all reusable plates and cutlery, reused the plates and cups so zero waste there, and everything fit into 1 load of the dishwasher for clean up! -
SUNIL RAMGULAM 4/22/2023 4:18 PMLovely day to get some light yard work done ahead of the rain tomorrow. Rain barrels installed! PLanning a surprise bday lunch for my better half. Thanks to the better half of team Sunana I have several items I can reuse for the festivities, and all those items are recyclable or compostable!
