  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Basic Needs & Security
What is one way you will reduce your water use? What is a practice you already have that helps you reduce your water use?

I am going to reduce my water usage by running the water less when I do dishes by hand. It can be hard to get food off the dishes! One way I am already reducing my water consumption is by being vegan :)
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health & Equity
What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time inside and on screens?

    Kayla Riege's avatar
    Kayla Riege 4/10/2023 5:23 PM
This is a really difficult habit to break due to so many jobs requiring you to be inside on a screen. This leads to decreased health and wellbeing (suffering from poor posture, polluted indoor air, lack of access to sunlight, no recharging through grounding, and less regard and appreciation for spending time in nature). The outdoors makes me feel more connected to the entire world and the people in it.

Happy Easter if you are celebrating! I bought some new houseplants today and enjoyed a vegan Easter meal with family! Topped it off with refreshing the bird feeder with more seed for my little friends of flight 🪺🐤🦆

Why is art an important way for you to express sustainability values?

    Kayla Riege's avatar
    Kayla Riege 4/08/2023 6:28 PM
I love taking images of places I explore as a way to preserve the gratitude I have for them in their natural state. Any image I have on my phone of nature I can likely tell you where it was :)

We took advantage of a holiday and drove all the way to the Mississippi River on the far west end of Wisconsin and enjoyed a 7.5 mile hike! The temperature got up to 60+ degrees - what a springtime gift!

Our corporate sustainability team spent time today discussing the definition of sustainability. Super exciting to hear the diverse perspectives in the room and even more exciting to share this Kohler Ecochallenge journey alongside of them!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Climate & Ecosystems
How can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place? Was there a new place in your region that was exciting to learn about and visit?

Met some neighbors on our evening trash walk who thanked us for collecting trash and vowed to come back and do it on their own. We explored a new neighborhood tonight as well and found we had neighbors who tapped their trees for maple syrup! So lovely meeting new people and finding fellow nature lovers in our community. Tonight's trash bandit total - 54 pieces! A record so far! Our bag was full so we had to head home and save more for the rest of this month's trash walks.

Day 4 - still raining here in Wisconsin, but a trash walk was to be had!! Strangely I am realizing my neighborhood is a lot more full of trash than I originally thought it would be. My neighbors have probably seen me ducking into their yards to grab trash caught in their bushes and gardens. I think I will call myself the neighborhood trash bandit - trash collector by night, sustainability champion by day :) I also use this time to practice mindfulness and gratitude and I am finding it is such a wonderful way to end my night!

This inspired me! I am also going to collect trash around my neighborhood from now on.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Climate & Ecosystems
What was your experience like plogging, or engaging in another way to collect litter while being outside? Was there any item you collected that was unusual that you found?

Day 3 - 30-minute walk and over 15 pieces of trash collected on my walk just around the neighborhood! I happened to find a bag stuck in a tree that I used to collect my trash! How convenient! :)
