Lauren's actions
Economy & Communities
Online Energy Audit
SDG 7
I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy.
Education & Livelihood
Plan A Staycation in Your Community
SDG 11
For an upcoming vacation, I will spend 20 minutes planning out a staycation in my region. For reference, one several hour flight releases the equivalent of nearly 14% of the annual emissions from a car.
Basic Needs & Security
Watch a Documentary About Food, Water, or Basic Needs
SDG 6
I will watch 1 documentaries about food, water, or basic needs.
Climate & Ecosystems
Explore My Area
SDG 14, 15
Each day, I will spend 10 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).
Health & Equity
Communicate Constructively
SDG 16
I will use the communication methods I read about to practice effective, compassionate, and nonviolent communication with someone I interact with regularly (i.e., my roommate, parents, co-worker, partner, classmates, or children).
Health & Equity
Watch a Documentary About Equity, Gender, Health, or Peace
SDG 3, 5, 10, 16
I will watch 1 documentaries about equity, gender, health, or peace.
Climate & Ecosystems
Watch a Documentary About Climate Change or Nature
SDG 13, 14, 15
I will watch 1 documentaries about climate change.
Climate & Ecosystems
Collect Litter on a Plog / Plalk
SDG 15
Each day, I will go on a plog or plalk for 15 minutes and collect 1 items of litter.
Climate & Ecosystems
Calculate Your Carbon Impact
SDG 13
I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.
Basic Needs & Security
Volunteer in My Community
SDG 1
I will volunteer 2 hours in my community.
Basic Needs & Security
Reduce Animal Product Consumption
SDG 2
One kilogram of beef and cheese emits 71kg and 24kg of greenhouse gasses, while 1kg of rice, grains, and legumes emits between 2-4kg. Fruits, vegetables, and nuts emit less than 1kg per 1kg. I will reduce my climate impact by enjoying 1 meatless meals and/or 1 vegan meals each day this week.
Education & Livelihood
Host or Join a Cleanup Event
SDG 11, 17
Within my community at home or work, I will organize or attend a local cleanup event.
Education & Livelihood
Watch a Documentary About Education or Work
SDG 4
I will watch 1 documentaries about education or work.
Economy & Communities
Watch a Documentary About Economy, Energy, or Industry
SDG 7, 9, 12
I will watch 1 documentaries about economy, energy, or industry.
Education & Livelihood
Work-Life Balance
SDG 8
During the workday, I will schedule time for daily breaks during work days to practice work-life balance.
Education & Livelihood
Stay on the Ground
SDG 11
Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally). As an example, a plane from New York to Los Angeles (~2,450 miles) generates about 65 tons of carbon dioxide.
Basic Needs & Security
Calculate Your Water Footprint
SDG 6
I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste.
Climate & Ecosystems
Ecological & Xeriscape Gardening
SDG 14, 15
Studies show a grass lawn is water intensive and on average it require about 30 percent of a household’s water consumption. I will do one or more of the following actions in my yard or community to conserve water and improve habitat: plant indigenous plants, landscape with water-efficient plants, add mulching, replace a lawn, and/or use eco-friendly fertilizers.

REFLECTION QUESTIONEducation & LivelihoodHow does working with others to clean up your community make you feel?
-
Lauren Roche 4/14/2023 11:10 AMIt's going pretty well. I feel like I need to get started on watching more documentaries. -
Lauren Roche 4/12/2023 8:32 AMIt's easy for me to walk outside daily and explore new areas. It's more difficult for me to watch a bunch of different documentaries when I have other shows I want to watch. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBasic Needs & SecurityWhat is one way you will reduce your water use? What is a practice you already have that helps you reduce your water use?
Lauren Roche 4/10/2023 1:26 PMI will try to take quicker showers to reduce my water use. I already recycle, which helps me reduce my water use. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & EcosystemsWhat ecological or xeriscape landscaping practices do you have? How has your landscape changed from these practices?
Lauren Roche 4/10/2023 1:18 PMI planted new plants in my parents' garden and added mulching in the front and back yard. The landscape will be more environmentally friendly from these practices. -
Lauren Roche 4/10/2023 1:15 PMI joined the challenge to motivate myself to live a more sustainable life and to further my education. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & EcosystemsWhat did you watch, and what was the most important thing you learned in the documentary(ies) you watched? How does what you learned connect to your understanding of climate change and Earth Month?
Lauren Roche 4/07/2023 7:59 AMI watched The Volcano: Rescue from Whakaari about an active New Zealand volcano that erupted in 2019. I learned about the signs that a volcano is about to erupt, about the difference between New Zealand volcanic activity vs Hawaii volcanic activity, and about the effects of a volcano eruption. This connects to my understanding of climate change by learning more about extreme weather conditions and the forces of nature that affect climate. -
Lauren Roche 4/06/2023 12:44 PMI think it's going well, and I'm steadily completing my goals. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & EquityWhat is easy for you to do when having a constructive conversation and what is challenging? What tips do you have for having a constructive conversation?
Lauren Roche 4/05/2023 9:24 AMIt's easy to relate with others and understand where they're coming from. It's challenging to approach conversations head on sometimes, especially if it involves conflict. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & EcosystemsWhat is one way you will reduce your carbon footprint? What is a practice you already have that helps you reduce your carbon footprint?
Lauren Roche 4/05/2023 9:23 AMI already consume minimal beef and lamb. I will reduce my carbon footprint by donating and selling clothes I don't use anymore.
