Climate & Ecosystems
Support Local Pollinators
SDG 15
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators to produce fruit. I will plant pollinator-friendly plants in my area to support local pollinators.

Climate & Ecosystems
Plant a Tree
SDG 15
On average, a tree absorbs 10 kilograms (22 pounds) of carbon dioxide yearly during the first 20 years. To do my part, I will plant 2 trees in my community, public parks, or backyard.
Climate & Ecosystems
Ecological & Xeriscape Gardening
SDG 14, 15
Studies show a grass lawn is water intensive and on average it require about 30 percent of a household’s water consumption. I will do one or more of the following actions in my yard or community to conserve water and improve habitat: plant indigenous plants, landscape with water-efficient plants, add mulching, replace a lawn, and/or use eco-friendly fertilizers.
Climate & Ecosystems
Beach Clean-up
We've had a bit a rough time with the cyclone season in NZ, and our beautiful beaches have been hammered, the habitat of many endangered birds has been compromised. The NZ beaches are reasonably clean otherwise. What I look for are bits of glass, which can be found occasionally. Some of those have smooth edges, sandblasted in the waves, but some are new and create a serious hazard for the beach goers.

REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & EcosystemsWhat ecological or xeriscape landscaping practices do you have? How has your landscape changed from these practices?
Cristina Roman 4/30/2023 3:59 PMWater is an important resource that we might take for granted.
I know is falling from the sky, but it is not that simple.
Using resilient grown covers instead of grass, mulching, and planting succulents in the sunny areas, is not only helping with water conservation, is helping me in the long run.
Less time mowing the loan is more time to start new and exciting projects. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & EcosystemsWhy is it important to take care of pollinators? Do you have a favorite pollinator?
Cristina Roman 4/30/2023 3:53 PMI do not have a favorite pollinator, they are all doing an important job.
As David Attenborough was saying, you loose one insect you loose a plant. You loose a plan you loose the mammal, the bird, the insect that was feeding on it.
We loose color and diversity. -

Cristina Roman 4/30/2023 2:54 PMThank you guys for your comments.
During the COVID lockdown I have discovered the blessing of having a garden.
It saves ones sanity and the sense of freedom.
I wish humans could see this planet as their unique, wonderful, magical garden, and treat it as such.
The alternative is living in a dump with fading memories of paradise. -
Cristina Roman 4/30/2023 2:47 PMThe new addition to my backyard garden are two avocado threes, one 1.5 m high, that will bear fruits in 5 years, and another younger seedling that with a bit of luck will bear fruits in 10 years. Next in line is a mini date palm. This will have to wait until the weather is more gardening friendly. Wey winter here in NZ. -
Cristina Roman 4/03/2023 9:16 PMI have joined today and set goals related to Climate and Ecosystems. I dream to have my back yard paradise one day. In few years I have brought the birds and the butterflies in my garden. The Tuis are doing well, the Kereru is visiting often, the Monarch butterfly is delighting me with it's aerial dance. Bliss.-
