  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Climate & Ecosystems
What is one way you will reduce your carbon footprint? What is a practice you already have that helps you reduce your carbon footprint?

In general, we’ve been trying to eat lower down on the food chain and buy less “throw away” items. With three children it’s been interesting to see how influenced they are by their larger social network, which may lead them to things and actions that have a higher carbon footprint. I am trying to use my influence wisely!

    Health & Equity
How have you reduced your purchasing habits and what would you like to do next to reduce your consumption habits?

I've tried a few different things to reduce my purchasing habits and/or better understand the organizations I am supporting. One of those things is to ask myself if it will hold its value over time. I think generally if the answer is no, it is probably going to have a larger negative impact on environmental and social systems. I also often refer to the Better World Shopping guide, as it attempts to look at a companies overall track record on environmental, social and economic dimensions.

I like the focus on items holding their value over time. I used to be more concerned with not spending too much or only buying new things on sale, but thinking more about sustainability has helped me realize that often it is worth paying a bit more for something that will last rather than buying a cheap thing that will give out after a season or two. For instance, well-made leather shoes cost more than those made with synthetic materials, but they last many years longer. I also try to buy more things second hand from local consignment shops or ebay. I have found some beautiful items that were hardly worn.

How does practicing a work-life balance create a more sustainable life for you? How might it contribute to sustainability more broadly?

Love this action! I feel it connects to a tension many of us feel (or at least I do!) generally. As I get more busy, I tend to tell myself I can't take a break...which does myself (and my work) no favors. I am continuously surprised at how stepping away from a project can yield greater long-term health. This includes the health of me physically and mentally, as well as doing a better job from a work related standpoint. For me, it connects to the larger importance of stepping to better understand the larger system.
