Health & Equity
Track My Purchases
SDG 10
Each day, I will track my purchases to identify my spending habits. This will allow me to see what purchases can be reduced.
Economy & Communities
Online Energy Audit
SDG 7
I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy.
Climate & Ecosystems
Explore My Area
SDG 14, 15
Each day, I will spend 30 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).
Health & Equity
Spend Time Outside
SDG 3
I will replace 60 minute(s) per day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside exercising, enjoying the sunrise/sunset, gardening, journaling, or practicing gratitude for nature.
Basic Needs & Security
Calculate Your Water Footprint
SDG 6
I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste.
Health & Equity
Learn and Discuss The Health & Equity SDGs
SDG 3, 5, 10, 16
Each day, I will spend 20 minutes learning about these SDGs and talk with 20 people about what I learned.
Basic Needs & Security
Try a New Vegan or Vegetarian Recipe
I will try a new vegan or vegetarian recipe and share how it turns out on the Ecochallenge feed, or with family and friends.
Education & Livelihood
Research Impact Investing
SDG 8
Using the links provided below, I will research impact investing or my current investment portfolio to determine if they align with my values.
Education & Livelihood
Work-Life Balance
SDG 8
During the workday, I will schedule time for daily breaks during work days to practice work-life balance.
Education & Livelihood
Watch a Documentary About Education or Work
SDG 4
I will watch 1 documentaries about education or work.
Climate & Ecosystems
Plant a Tree
SDG 15
On average, a tree absorbs 10 kilograms (22 pounds) of carbon dioxide yearly during the first 20 years. To do my part, I will plant 1 trees in my community, public parks, or backyard.
Economy & Communities
Choose LED Bulbs
SDG 7
I will replace 5 incandescent light bulb(s) with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.
Economy & Communities
Choose Clean/Renewable Energy
SDG 7
I will contact my energy company to find out how to sign up for my utility company's clean/renewable energy option.
Basic Needs & Security
Know Your Produce
SDG 2
I will become a savvy produce shopper when buying organic and non-organic items.
Climate & Ecosystems
Ecological & Xeriscape Gardening
SDG 14, 15
Studies show a grass lawn is water intensive and on average it require about 30 percent of a household’s water consumption. I will do one or more of the following actions in my yard or community to conserve water and improve habitat: plant indigenous plants, landscape with water-efficient plants, add mulching, replace a lawn, and/or use eco-friendly fertilizers.
Climate & Ecosystems
Calculate Your Carbon Impact
SDG 13
I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.

REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & EcosystemsWhat is one way you will reduce your carbon footprint? What is a practice you already have that helps you reduce your carbon footprint?
Scott Royael 4/29/2023 6:13 AMIn general, we’ve been trying to eat lower down on the food chain and buy less “throw away” items. With three children it’s been interesting to see how influenced they are by their larger social network, which may lead them to things and actions that have a higher carbon footprint. I am trying to use my influence wisely! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & EquityHow have you reduced your purchasing habits and what would you like to do next to reduce your consumption habits?
Scott Royael 4/14/2023 12:19 PMI've tried a few different things to reduce my purchasing habits and/or better understand the organizations I am supporting. One of those things is to ask myself if it will hold its value over time. I think generally if the answer is no, it is probably going to have a larger negative impact on environmental and social systems. I also often refer to the Better World Shopping guide, as it attempts to look at a companies overall track record on environmental, social and economic dimensions.-
Michelle Bilodeau-Lanne 4/18/2023 11:48 AMI like the focus on items holding their value over time. I used to be more concerned with not spending too much or only buying new things on sale, but thinking more about sustainability has helped me realize that often it is worth paying a bit more for something that will last rather than buying a cheap thing that will give out after a season or two. For instance, well-made leather shoes cost more than those made with synthetic materials, but they last many years longer. I also try to buy more things second hand from local consignment shops or ebay. I have found some beautiful items that were hardly worn.

REFLECTION QUESTIONEducation & LivelihoodHow does practicing a work-life balance create a more sustainable life for you? How might it contribute to sustainability more broadly?
Scott Royael 4/03/2023 10:51 AMLove this action! I feel it connects to a tension many of us feel (or at least I do!) generally. As I get more busy, I tend to tell myself I can't take a break...which does myself (and my work) no favors. I am continuously surprised at how stepping away from a project can yield greater long-term health. This includes the health of me physically and mentally, as well as doing a better job from a work related standpoint. For me, it connects to the larger importance of stepping to better understand the larger system.
