Malea's actions
Health & Equity
Communicate Constructively
SDG 16
I will use the communication methods I read about to practice effective, compassionate, and nonviolent communication with someone I interact with regularly (i.e., my roommate, parents, co-worker, partner, classmates, or children).
Health & Equity
Practice Mindfulness
SDG 3
I will spend 30 minutes each day practicing mindfulness.
Education & Livelihood
Work-Life Balance
SDG 8
During the workday, I will schedule time for daily breaks during work days to practice work-life balance.
Health & Equity
Track My Purchases
SDG 10
Each day, I will track my purchases to identify my spending habits. This will allow me to see what purchases can be reduced.
Basic Needs & Security
Try a New Vegan or Vegetarian Recipe
I will try a new vegan or vegetarian recipe and share how it turns out on the Ecochallenge feed, or with family and friends.
Health & Equity
Spend Time Outside
SDG 3
I will replace 30 minute(s) per day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside exercising, enjoying the sunrise/sunset, gardening, journaling, or practicing gratitude for nature.
Basic Needs & Security
Calculate Your Water Footprint
SDG 6
I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste.
Economy & Communities
Online Energy Audit
SDG 7
I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy.
Climate & Ecosystems
Plant a Tree
SDG 15
On average, a tree absorbs 10 kilograms (22 pounds) of carbon dioxide yearly during the first 20 years. To do my part, I will plant 1 trees in my community, public parks, or backyard.
Education & Livelihood
Stay on the Ground
SDG 11
Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally). As an example, a plane from New York to Los Angeles (~2,450 miles) generates about 65 tons of carbon dioxide.

REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & EcosystemsHow is planting trees good for your mental, physical, and spiritual health?
-
Malea Russell 4/20/2023 6:14 AMFor Earth Day this Saturday volunteer to plant some trees in Lawrenceville 9-12 with some of us at DRDC! Follow this link to sign up (waterlandlife.org), and there's also events in Brentwood and McKeesport. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBasic Needs & SecurityWhat was the dish you made, and how did it turn out? What did it feel like to try a new recipe? If you can share a picture, please do!
Malea Russell 4/19/2023 5:46 AMMade a vegan Mediterranean quinoa salad with homemade vinaigrette earlier this month. So easy and super delicious, I remake it over and over to always keep some in my fridge. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEducation & LivelihoodWhat was your process like for restructuring your trip? How can you avoid more air travel in the future?
Malea Russell 4/19/2023 5:42 AMDecided to drive to Maine instead of flying for upcoming camping trip. Definitely made it easier to decide with 3 people who can take turns driving, but I would do it regardless to save carbon and money.
