Eric's actions

Economy & Communities

Analyze Your Utility Bills

SDG 7

I spend 20 minutes analyzing my recent utility bills, which might include electricity, gas, or water to see what my current usage is and determine if I can reduce my energy and water use.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Basic Needs & Security

Know Your Produce

SDG 2

I will become a savvy produce shopper when buying organic and non-organic items.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Education & Livelihood

Plan A Staycation in Your Community

SDG 11

For an upcoming vacation, I will spend 30 minutes planning out a staycation in my region. For reference, one several hour flight releases the equivalent of nearly 14% of the annual emissions from a car.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Economy & Communities

Watch a Documentary About Economy, Energy, or Industry

SDG 7, 9, 12

I will watch 2 documentaries about economy, energy, or industry.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Education & Livelihood

Educational Conversation

Talking about the importance of sustainability is one of the best ways to advocate for change. To complete this challlenge, have a conversation with someone about sustainable efforts, practices, conservation, or even just how much you love the planet

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Climate & Ecosystems

Decline Single-Use Plastics

To help reduce the impact of single-use plastics, decline those items when offered. Complete this challenge by choosing an alternative to straws, grocery bags, or other plastics that only get one use before ending up in the environment.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Climate & Ecosystems

Collect Litter on a Plog / Plalk

SDG 15

Each day, I will go on a plog or plalk for 5 minutes and collect 10 items of litter.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Climate & Ecosystems

Watch a Documentary About Climate Change or Nature

SDG 13, 14, 15

I will watch 3 documentaries about climate change.

SDG 12

I will have a conversation with one or more nonprofit organizations I want to be involved with.

COMPLETED

Explore My Area

SDG 14, 15

Each day, I will spend 10 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Economy & Communities

Online Energy Audit

SDG 7

I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy.

Choose LED Bulbs

SDG 7

I will replace 6 incandescent light bulb(s) with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Education & Livelihood

Stay on the Ground

SDG 11

Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally). As an example, a plane from New York to Los Angeles (~2,450 miles) generates about 65 tons of carbon dioxide.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Make Cleaning Products

SDG 3

I will make a few homemade cleaning products.

COMPLETED

Good morning, everyone and welcome to the final day of the Eco-Challenge! It's been a great month, and I hope you all have learned a lot about how little changes can make a significant impact. The final creature for this challenge is the common snapping turtle (Chelydra serpentina). This is Darla, who is a rare example of an albino in the species. Common snapping turtles are found throughout the southern United States and are more prevlanent than their larger cousins, the alligator snapping turtle. Despite that, their bite force is nothing to scoff at, delivering greater newtons per bite than the alligator snapping turtles. These turtles are typically shy, avoiding confrontation and run-ins with humans - Darla being an exception as she will defend her territory unless she knows it is time to be fed.

Good morning, everyone, and welcome to Day 29 of the Eco-Challenge! We are just about at the finish line! Today's creature is the clown triggerfish (Ballistoides conspicillum). These reef fish are solitary hunters, seeking out crustaceans or small fish to feed on while defending their territory. The clown trigger is easily identified by its unique coloration, with white ventral spotting standing out against the black and yellow patterning of the body and fins. Their unique appearance has made them popular in professional and hobby aquariums.

Good morning, everyone, and welcome to Day 28 of the Eco-Challenge! Today's creature is the ball python (Python regius). These constrictors are endemic to the central savanna grasslands of Africa. Unlike venomous snakes, which use their toxins to subdue prey, constrictors bite and coil around the prey, squeezing progressively until asphyxiation before consuming whole. Ball pythons are the smallest African constrictor and their diet is almost entirely made up of rodents.

Good morning, everyone! Welcome to Day 27 of the Eco-Challenge! Today's creature is the golden trevally (Gnathanodon speciosus). These schooling Pacific fish have brilliant gold bands as juveniles that become more muted as they mature. As a protective measure, golden trevally can often be seen shadowing larger predatory fish like sharks. They are nimble enough to avoid being snacks for the fish they're following, and their proximity to a large predator deters other predators.

Hello, everyone, I hope you're having a great Day 26 of the Eco-Challenge! Today's creature is the swell shark (Cephaloscyllium ventriosum). These catsharks earned their name from their propensity to gulp down water and expand when threatened, making them difficult to bite onto or dislodge from hiding crevices. During the day, swell sharks tend to remain hidden but venture out at night in search of crustaceans, mollusks, and fish.

Hello, everyone, I hope you all had a great Day 25 of the Eco-Challenge! Today's creature is the mallard duck (Anas platyrhynchos). These ducks have a significant sexual dimorphism, with females having brown mottled coloration while males have iridescent green heads. Found throughout the country, these mild-mannered birds are equally at home in wild areas and human environments.

Good morning, everyone, and welcome to Day 24 of the Eco-Challenge! Today's creature is the giant red hermit crab (Petrochirus diogenes). These large crustaceans feed on algea, small invertebrates, and occassionaly gastropods like snails. Like other hermit crabs, the giant reds seek shells in which they tuck their bodies and carry around as both a home and a defensive shelter. As they grow larger, the crabs will seek larger accomodations, sometimes eating the original occupant of said shell.

Good morning, everyone and welcome to Day 23 of the Eco-Challenge! Today's creature is the longnose hawkfish (Oxycirrhites typus). These Indo-Pacific reef fish are ambush predators, hiding out among the coral before darting out and seizing small crustaceans. Unlike schooling fish, hawkfish prefer to have a solitary patch of terrirtoy that they will defend and bully other hawkfish out of.

Hello everyone, and happy Earth Day! I hope you all enjoyed it. Thank you to everyone who came out and participated in the Love the Boot Cleanup for Downtown Shreveport, it was a great experience and your hard work is very appreciated! The creature for the day is the purple martin (Progne subis). These birds are of the swallow family and breed in North America before traveling to South America. The males are more colorful, being a sheen of purple and blue where the females are lighter and more drab in coloration.

Good morning, everyone! Welcome to Day 21 of the Eco-Challenge! Today's creature is the spotted gar (Lepisosteus oculatus). These elongated fish are typically found in freshwater but can travel into brackish water from time to time. The spotted gar is the smallest species of gar, but still carry a mouth full of sharp teeth that they use for catching small fish and crustaceans. Like all gar, they are also armored with thick enameled scales, lending to their genus which translates to "bony scale."
