Michele's actions
Climate & Ecosystems
Ecological & Xeriscape Gardening
SDG 14, 15
Studies show a grass lawn is water intensive and on average it require about 30 percent of a household’s water consumption. I will do one or more of the following actions in my yard or community to conserve water and improve habitat: plant indigenous plants, landscape with water-efficient plants, add mulching, replace a lawn, and/or use eco-friendly fertilizers.
Health & Equity
Support Public Transit
SDG 10, 16
Access to public transportation enables more opportunity and a better quality of life. I will make 0 phone calls and/or send 10 emails per day to public officials to advocate for a more comprehensive public transportation system in my region.
Economy & Communities
Online Energy Audit
SDG 7
I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy.
Economy & Communities
Chat With A Nonprofit
SDG 12
I will have a conversation with one or more nonprofit organizations I want to be involved with.
Basic Needs & Security
Know Your Produce
SDG 2
I will become a savvy produce shopper when buying organic and non-organic items.
Climate & Ecosystems
Calculate Your Carbon Impact
SDG 13
I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.
Education & Livelihood
Research Impact Investing
SDG 8
Using the links provided below, I will research impact investing or my current investment portfolio to determine if they align with my values.
Health & Equity
Make Cleaning Products
SDG 3
I will make a few homemade cleaning products.
Health & Equity
Track My Purchases
SDG 10
Each day, I will track my purchases to identify my spending habits. This will allow me to see what purchases can be reduced.
Economy & Communities
Analyze Your Utility Bills
SDG 7
I spend 30 minutes analyzing my recent utility bills, which might include electricity, gas, or water to see what my current usage is and determine if I can reduce my energy and water use.
Climate & Ecosystems
Create & Share A Love Letter, Poem, Song or Picture
SDG 14, 15
I will express my love and gratitude for our planet by writing a love letter, poem, song or taking a picture. I will share this in the Ecochallenge feed or on my social media.
Climate & Ecosystems
Support Local Pollinators
SDG 15
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators to produce fruit. I will plant pollinator-friendly plants in my area to support local pollinators.
Basic Needs & Security
Calculate Your Water Footprint
SDG 6
I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste.
Education & Livelihood
Plan A Staycation in Your Community
SDG 11
For an upcoming vacation, I will spend 60 minutes planning out a staycation in my region. For reference, one several hour flight releases the equivalent of nearly 14% of the annual emissions from a car.
Health & Equity
Advocate for Equitable Food Access
SDG 10
Access to affordable, nutritious food is a food justice issue. I will advocate for equitable food options at work, campus, or in the spaces I frequent by contacting community leaders and/or doing other advocacy actions.
Basic Needs & Security
Try a New Vegan or Vegetarian Recipe
I will try a new vegan or vegetarian recipe and share how it turns out on the Ecochallenge feed, or with family and friends.
Health & Equity
Support Indigenous & First Nations Communities
SDG 10
I will spend 30 learning about the past and present indigenous communities in my regions and what I can do to be supportive.
Education & Livelihood
Host or Join a Cleanup Event
SDG 11, 17
Within my community at home or work, I will organize or attend a local cleanup event.
Basic Needs & Security
Get Involved in the Water Justice Movement
SDG 6
I will spend 60 minutes learning about water justice in my region.
Health & Equity
Communicate Constructively
SDG 16
I will use the communication methods I read about to practice effective, compassionate, and nonviolent communication with someone I interact with regularly (i.e., my roommate, parents, co-worker, partner, classmates, or children).
Education & Livelihood
Promote access to education for an underrepresented population.
The SDG for education and livelihood says it all - "The UN recognizes that equitable education needs to be available for all along with productive employment and decent work. Both education and decent work are crucial for sustainable communities that create a good quality of life by reducing the negative impacts of activities that are hazardous to human health and the environment."
Climate & Ecosystems
Collect Litter on a Plog / Plalk

Economy & Communities
Replace Manual Thermostats
SDG 7, 9, 12
I will replace manual thermostats with smart ones.

REFLECTION QUESTIONBasic Needs & SecurityWhat was the dish you made, and how did it turn out? What did it feel like to try a new recipe? If you can share a picture, please do!
Michele Sprague 4/30/2023 6:06 PMI confess I never got to make the dish I wanted to try - I have all the ingredients, I just ran the out of time in the month. I DO still intend to try it though, here's the link! https://pin.it/GktdUZe
If you work with me you will have the opportunity to try it if it works out, so email me! -
Michele Sprague 4/30/2023 5:59 PMWay to GO SUNY Adirondack teams, and kudos to my team, the ADK Gaming Club, for consistent participation! I hope you all learned a lot and continue to grow on the micronations you take each day - they add up and inspire others!!! -

Michele Sprague 4/27/2023 6:59 PMOne of the things that I am lucky enough to do is work in higher education, where we touch so many underserved students with significant barriers. By providing information and access you can change someone's whole life trajectory, and that all impacts sustainability goals. -

REFLECTION QUESTIONEconomy & CommunitiesWhat most interested or surprised you about your energy audit?
Michele Sprague 4/26/2023 6:29 PMTo be fair, I have a very old house (built in the 1840s) that is slowly getting into the 21st century. As such, my home isn't exactly airtight. We still have to reinsulate about 1/3 of it, and some of the doors are in need of replacement (or at least the seals are). The furnace is also not the most efficient, but we have energy star appliances and use entirely LED light bulbs and fixtures The windows are relatively new though, which is positive! I also get bonus points for going green on my electric and being part of a solar farm, where I also receive 5% off my total bill. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & EquityHow is food equity and access linked to a sustainable future?
Michele Sprague 4/26/2023 6:17 PMFood access and food waste go hand in hand. Overall smarter measures can help prevent waste, as can grow local/stay local/eat local initiatives. The less a food item has to travel the less emissions due to transport there are, the longer period of use it has, and the more likely it is to be consumed. Food access and sustainability can both be addressed by staying local for your purchases! -
