Zero Waste Day

The impacts of our waste are far reaching. I will create zero waste for an entire day and share my reflections and learnings on the feed.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Borrow Before I Buy

Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Share My "Why"

I will record a video to share why I am taking action this Earth Month, a sustainable swap I've made, and/or a local conservation effort in my area.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Volunteer in my Community

I will volunteer 8 hours in my community.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Use a Reusable Water Bottle

It's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 3 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.

COMPLETED 0
DAILY ACTIONS

Climate + Air

Choose Renewable Energy

Renewable energy options are becoming more widespread and accessible. Not only are they good for the planet, they can help save money as well. I will sign up for my utility company's clean/renewable energy option. If my utility does not offer one, I will contact them to advocate for this option in the future.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Join a Cleanup Effort

I will organize or participate in a trash pickup at a local river, beach, or natural body of water.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Calculate My Carbon Impact

Carbon emissions can show up in many surprising ways in our life. I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Sustainability Lunch and Learn

Learning in a social setting can inspire connection and change. I will work with a friend or colleague to plan and host a lunch and learn at work, school, in my neighborhood or other location to learn more about an environmental topic important to me. After the lunch and learn, I will share more about it on the feed.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Raise Awareness for the Conservation of Freshwater and Oceans

I will spend 60 minutes learning more about the importance of freshwater + ocean conservation, and how I can reduce my water use. I will share what I learn with people in person, on social media, and on the feed.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Understand My Water Footprint

Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Choose Eco-Friendly Wood and Paper

Trees provide food and habitat for local wildlife species, shade our streets and homes, and help keep our air and water clean by capturing pollutants. Buying products that help protect forests makes a difference. I will only purchase wood, furniture, and paper products from ecologically certified sources such as Forest Stewardship Council.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Plant Trees

Trees capture carbon and produce oxygen that is essential to life on earth. I will support this important piece of nature by organizing or joining a community group to plant 1 native trees in my community, public parks, office location, campus or backyard.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Keep My Community Clean

At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.

COMPLETED 0
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Low Water Gardening

Grass lawns are water-intensive and on average require about 30 percent of a household’s water consumption. Native plants are water-efficient and help maintain the balance and diversity of local ecosystems. I will plant native species with water-efficient plants to conserve water and improve the habitat, then post a photo on the feed to share.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Online Energy Audit

Energy use and waste is often invisible. I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Riding my horse to the shops is beneficial in many ways:
    * I don't use any diesel
    * It's faster than walking (the nearest bakery is about 3 km away) and works in all weathers, even when tracks are too muddy for cycling
    * My horse and I get some exercise and time out in nature before we get to the village
    * My horse gets to navigate around cars and dustbins and prams
    * Other customers come up to us for a chat about the horse
    * The baker is happy about all the attention we create
It is worthwhile doing some things better instead of faster.

Wonderful photo! Not all of us can have this alternative transportation option but great to see how you integrate this into your day.

Sharing an environmentally friendly habit: I angle my computer screens away from direct light so I can use the lowest possible brightness setting to reduce power use.

Sharing an environmentally friendly habit: I collect sheets of paper that are blank on one side, from printed material to unimportant letters I get by post, and use them as draft paper. After I am done with them, I either recycle them or shred them to make bedding for my chickens, which eventually finds its way to the compost heap (maximum confidentiality!)

Sharing an environmentally friendly habit: managing the temperature inside our home. Our windows have outside wooden shutters. In the colder months, we open them at sunrise and close them at sunset, to let sunshine in and help warm the rooms. In the three months when the house could get too hot for comfort, we open them only partially during the day to let light in and keep the sun out.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Climate & Ecosystems
What is one way you will reduce your carbon footprint? What is a practice you already have that helps you reduce your carbon footprint?

    Anne-Laure Tertois 4/25/2023 12:35 AM
I will keep shifting my diet away from higher-impact meat.
A practice I already have is to use my horse for transportation instead of driving.

That's fantastic! I stopped eating meat a few years ago (although my family still eats it). But I do wish I could switch my transportation method to real horse power like you have!

Calculated my household's carbon footprint: 2.23 tons CO2 / month. Recurring over a year, this is equivalent to 11,400 litres of gasoline consumed (3,016 gallons).
The average monthly footprint of a US household is 4 tons CO2 / month.
    Food for thought.

Sharing an environmentally friendly habit: using timers. Nowadays, it is easy to set schedules for our appliances. The thermostat for my (non-environmentally friendly...) boiler is on a timer so that the heating is only on for a little while in the morning and a bit longer in the evenings, never at night. The horses' electric fence is also on a timer so that it switches off while I am inside the paddock (poo-picking) and at their scheduled meal times when I am pretty sure they are not going to try and escape.
Switching things off and on again to save energy can be a pain, and timers make our lives easier as well as more environmentally friendly.

Sharing an environmentally friendly habit: after a final wash, keep worn-out socks in a box close to your tool chest. They are very handy to mop up water spillages, wipe paint or silicon, wash off saw or plaster dust... Only throw them away at the end of their second life.

Sharing an environmentally friendly habit: compost. My horses produce high-quality compost that I use myself for potted plants and veg growing experiments (I'm not very good at that). I also give a lot of it away to neighbours in the village, and the local farmer spreads the rest on his fields.

Sharing an environmentally friendly habit: making tea... Kettles switch off when a piece of metal dilates as hot water vapour rises to it when the water boils. This means that it takes a little while after the water has actually started boiling for the kettle to switch off. When I turn it on, I stick around doing a bit of tidying in the kitchen so that I can manually switch the kettle off when the water is just hot enough.
