Education & Livelihood
Stay on the Ground
SDG 11
Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally). As an example, a plane from New York to Los Angeles (~2,450 miles) generates about 65 tons of carbon dioxide.
Basic Needs & Security
Advocate For Your Watershed
SDG 6
I will call my elected officials to ask about what they are doing regarding water issues in my region.
Climate & Ecosystems
Calculate Your Carbon Impact
SDG 13
I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.
Economy & Communities
Online Energy Audit
SDG 7
I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy.
Basic Needs & Security
Try a New Vegan or Vegetarian Recipe
I will try a new vegan or vegetarian recipe and share how it turns out on the Ecochallenge feed, or with family and friends.
Basic Needs & Security
Calculate Your Water Footprint
SDG 6
I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste.
Basic Needs & Security
Volunteer in My Community
SDG 1
I will volunteer 3 hours in my community.
Climate & Ecosystems
Plant a Tree
SDG 15
On average, a tree absorbs 10 kilograms (22 pounds) of carbon dioxide yearly during the first 20 years. To do my part, I will plant 1 trees in my community, public parks, or backyard.
Climate & Ecosystems
Support Local Pollinators
SDG 15
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators to produce fruit. I will plant pollinator-friendly plants in my area to support local pollinators.
Climate & Ecosystems
Collect Litter on a Plog / Plalk
SDG 15
Each day, I will go on a plog or plalk for 30 minutes and collect 5 items of litter.
Climate & Ecosystems
Ecological & Xeriscape Gardening
SDG 14, 15
Studies show a grass lawn is water intensive and on average it require about 30 percent of a household’s water consumption. I will do one or more of the following actions in my yard or community to conserve water and improve habitat: plant indigenous plants, landscape with water-efficient plants, add mulching, replace a lawn, and/or use eco-friendly fertilizers.
Education & Livelihood
Host or Join a Cleanup Event
SDG 11, 17
Within my community at home or work, I will organize or attend a local cleanup event.
Basic Needs & Security
Reduce Animal Product Consumption
SDG 2
One kilogram of beef and cheese emits 71kg and 24kg of greenhouse gasses, while 1kg of rice, grains, and legumes emits between 2-4kg. Fruits, vegetables, and nuts emit less than 1kg per 1kg. I will reduce my climate impact by enjoying 4 meatless meals and/or 0 vegan meals each day this week.
Education & Livelihood
Work-Life Balance
SDG 8
During the workday, I will schedule time for daily breaks during work days to practice work-life balance.
Education & Livelihood
Plan A Staycation in Your Community
SDG 11
For an upcoming vacation, I will spend 30 minutes planning out a staycation in my region. For reference, one several hour flight releases the equivalent of nearly 14% of the annual emissions from a car.
Basic Needs & Security
Know Your Produce
SDG 2
I will become a savvy produce shopper when buying organic and non-organic items.
Economy & Communities
Choose LED Bulbs
SDG 7
I will replace 14 incandescent light bulb(s) with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.
Economy & Communities
Chat With A Nonprofit
SDG 12
I will have a conversation with one or more nonprofit organizations I want to be involved with.
Economy & Communities
Analyze Your Utility Bills
SDG 7
I spend 20 minutes analyzing my recent utility bills, which might include electricity, gas, or water to see what my current usage is and determine if I can reduce my energy and water use.
Health & Equity
Spend Time Outside
SDG 3
I will replace 30 minute(s) per day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside exercising, enjoying the sunrise/sunset, gardening, journaling, or practicing gratitude for nature.
Health & Equity
Make Cleaning Products
SDG 3
I will make a few homemade cleaning products.
Health & Equity
Practice Mindfulness
SDG 3
I will spend 10 minutes each day practicing mindfulness.
Economy & Communities
Choose Clean/Renewable Energy
SDG 7
I will contact my energy company to find out how to sign up for my utility company's clean/renewable energy option.
Education & Livelihood
Research Impact Investing
SDG 8
Using the links provided below, I will research impact investing or my current investment portfolio to determine if they align with my values.
Economy & Communities

REFLECTION QUESTIONBasic Needs & SecurityWhat watershed do you live in presently? What is something interesting or unique about your watershed?
Lauren Tierney 4/28/2023 6:16 AMI work in the Portsmouth NH watershed, and my parents live near it. My current job is working to investigate the nature and extent of PFAS contamination through the watershed and it's impacts on receptors such as public and private drinking water supplies. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEconomy & CommunitiesWhat most interested or surprised you about your energy audit?
Lauren Tierney 4/28/2023 6:10 AMI could save a lot of money and improve the efficiency of my heating system but replacing my exterior doors/weather stripping! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & EcosystemsWhat is one way you will reduce your carbon footprint? What is a practice you already have that helps you reduce your carbon footprint?
Lauren Tierney 4/28/2023 6:04 AMI am going to bike to work at least one day per week this summer to reduce my carbon footprint. My current focus on reducing food waste and single use plastic is helping to reduce my carbon footprint! -
Lauren Tierney 4/28/2023 5:41 AMOnly 3 days left in the eco-challenge, but a lifetime left to stay eco-focused! -
Lauren Tierney 4/28/2023 5:40 AMWe had an office BBQ yesterday and in reviewing how it went we started brainstorming some ways we could try to make it more sustainable in the future. Two big ideas are to shop in bulk to reduce the amount of packaging associated with the food, and secondly to use reusable silverware/encourage folks to bring real plates instead of using paper plates. It's not feasible in our current office to use 100% real plates, so we intended to collect and compost any paper plates and napkins next time. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEducation & LivelihoodAfter learning more about investing, how can you increase positive impacts and decrease negative impacts?
Lauren Tierney 4/28/2023 5:33 AMI plan to let my financial advisor know that clean investing is a high priority for me and my partner and that we' would like to be involved in helping to evaluate where our money is invested. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEducation & LivelihoodWhat was your process like for restructuring your trip? How can you avoid more air travel in the future?
Lauren Tierney 4/19/2023 10:56 AMWe are traveling to Montreal in June with some friends and had been weighing flying v driving. By driving and carpooling in 1 car, we're saving almost 300 lb of CO2! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEconomy & CommunitiesWhat was it like to mend your clothing? If you are skilled at mending, what tips do you have for others?
Lauren Tierney 4/19/2023 5:44 AMFor whatever reason the button on my partner's pants always seems to fall off, making the pants unwearable, but such a simple fix to mend! I've also sewed buttons back onto shits and repaired minor rips. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEconomy & CommunitiesWhat was the most interesting thing you learned from analyzing your utility bill? What are some ways you can save energy and water?
Lauren Tierney 4/19/2023 5:34 AMWe recently re-did our bathroom and for about 3 weeks we had to shower at work instead of at home and I noticed a big difference in our water bill. No surprise there, but it really got me thinking about ways to economize on our water usage in the shower. -
Lauren Tierney 4/19/2023 5:31 AMMore than halfway through the month and I can already see how daily check-ins have started to build habbits in my routine and change my mindset!
