Stay on the Ground

SDG 11

Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally). As an example, a plane from New York to Los Angeles (~2,450 miles) generates about 65 tons of carbon dioxide.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate & Ecosystems

Support Local Pollinators

At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators to produce fruit. I will plant pollinator-friendly plants in my area to support local pollinators.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate & Ecosystems

Collect Litter on a Plog / Plalk

SDG 15

Each day, I will go on a plog or plalk for 30 minutes and collect 5 items of litter.

COMPLETED 7
DAILY ACTIONS

Climate & Ecosystems

Ecological & Xeriscape Gardening

SDG 14, 15

Studies show a grass lawn is water intensive and on average it require about 30 percent of a household’s water consumption. I will do one or more of the following actions in my yard or community to conserve water and improve habitat: plant indigenous plants, landscape with water-efficient plants, add mulching, replace a lawn, and/or use eco-friendly fertilizers.

COMPLETED

Host or Join a Cleanup Event

SDG 11, 17

Within my community at home or work, I will organize or attend a local cleanup event.

COMPLETED

Reduce Animal Product Consumption

SDG 2

One kilogram of beef and cheese emits 71kg and 24kg of greenhouse gasses, while 1kg of rice, grains, and legumes emits between 2-4kg. Fruits, vegetables, and nuts emit less than 1kg per 1kg. I will reduce my climate impact by enjoying 4 meatless meals and/or 0 vegan meals each day this week.

I am going to bike to work at least one day per week this summer to reduce my carbon footprint. My current focus on reducing food waste and single use plastic is helping to reduce my carbon footprint!

We had an office BBQ yesterday and in reviewing how it went we started brainstorming some ways we could try to make it more sustainable in the future. Two big ideas are to shop in bulk to reduce the amount of packaging associated with the food, and secondly to use reusable silverware/encourage folks to bring real plates instead of using paper plates. It's not feasible in our current office to use 100% real plates, so we intended to collect and compost any paper plates and napkins next time.

We recently re-did our bathroom and for about 3 weeks we had to shower at work instead of at home and I noticed a big difference in our water bill. No surprise there, but it really got me thinking about ways to economize on our water usage in the shower.
